3-generation family dinner, free rice bar: Ulsan Daewangam Dol

In short

Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a 250-degree stone-plate jjajang and jjamppong Chinese restaurant on Ilsanjin 5-gil in Dong-gu, Ulsan. A three-generation family—parents, sister, and a young child—shared mild-spice dol jjajang, dol jjamppong with extra whole squid, and a don-chi-tang set, helped along by baby chairs, kids' tableware, a free rice self-bar, and dessert barley candy. It's an easy pick for a family meal with both grandparents and kids in tow.

A family outing in search of a Dong-gu, Ulsan restaurant

Visiting Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong in Ilsanji, Dong-gu, Ulsan
The whole family out for a meal at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong

My family spent this summer vacation in Ulsan, where my parents live! We wanted to look around Ilsanji too, so the whole family headed out for a fun meal together.

My parents and younger sister both love jjamppong, and with a kid in tow we needed somewhere everyone from adults to children could enjoy, so we picked 'Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong,' famous as a Daewangam-area spot in Ulsan.

It turns out this is a special place — one of only 3 directly-run locations in the whole country (Ulsan Daewangam, Busan Songjeong, and Miryang). It's so word-of-mouth famous that it even appeared on Ulsan MBC right after opening, so we went in with high expectations.

The restaurant was spacious and pleasant, making it really easy to dine together as a big extended family.

Baby chairs and kids' tableware were plentiful for young children, so there was zero worry about bringing a little one along for a family meal.

Free rice self-bar — help yourself without a second thought

Self-bar corner with free rice

At a self-bar set up in one corner of the restaurant, you can grab as much free rice as you like. Both the self-bar and the side-dish corner were kept hygienically clean.

Usually you feel pressured to order one dish per person or a large size to match your headcount, but here they let you order comfortably based on what actually suits your group and appetite — the thoughtfulness really stood out 👍 And with the free rice self-bar, you can mix rice into whatever jjamppong or jjajang sauce is left without feeling awkward — makes for such an easy meal!

The food here comes out on a 250-degree amphibolite stone plate, so it stays hot right to the last bite. Since there were a lot of us, we ordered a wide variety of the signature dishes.

Starch-free original dol jjajang (mild spice)

Apparently this is the only jjajang in the country made without starch, cooked fresh the moment it's ordered.

Mixing the dol jjajang on the stone plate

We picked mild spice so the kids could eat too, and the jjajang was impressively clean and light yet deeply flavorful.

The sauce soaked in nicely and there were a few shrimp mixed in, so the kids ate it up happily.

A special treat at the bottom of the stone plate: nurungji (scorched rice)

Once you've finished the noodles, there's a layer of nutty nurungji (scorched rice) sitting at the bottom of the 250-degree stone plate. Scraping up the nurungji, soaked through just right with sauce and broth, is a real treat both in fun and flavor.

After gently setting aside a portion for the kids first, I wanted to try it spicier for the adults! I grabbed the chili flake shaker they'd left on the table and sprinkled some on.

Worried it might be too spicy, I sprinkled just a little at first, but it had a pleasant kick without being overly hot, so I ended up shaking on plenty and enjoyed the extra savory-spicy flavor.

Dol jjamppong that changes flavor three times (with extra whole squid)

Nurungji dol jjamppong topped with bean sprouts

The dol jjamppong my parents and sister had started with the rich flavor of chicken broth, moved into a stir-fried jjamppong feel with crunchy bean sprouts, and finished with a yaki-udon-like note as the noodles soaked up the broth — three distinct charms in one dish.

Adding the whole squid on top made the broth even more refreshing and sharply spicy, and my parents were thoroughly satisfied.

Crispy don-chi-tang (pork cutlet + sweet-and-sour chicken)

The don-chi-tang (pork cutlet + sweet-and-sour chicken) that came with the set was crispy outside and moist inside, pairing well with both the jjajang and jjamppong.

A sweet dessert service: barley candy and yogurt

After the meal, there's a dessert corner where you can help yourself to chilled yogurt and nutty barley candy.

We wrapped up the meal on a happy note with the crispy, sweet barley candy.

An Ilsanji, Ulsan restaurant to bring kids and parents alike

With the standout stone-plate dishes you'd expect from one of only 3 directly-run branches nationwide, a spacious restaurant, baby chairs, a free rice self-bar, and even dessert barley candy, the thoughtful service really stood out.
