Cuttlefish stone jjamppong with chicken sweet-and-sour: Ulsan

In short

Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a stone-pot jjamppong and jjajang restaurant on Ilsanjin 5-gil in Dong-gu, Ulsan. Visiting with her partner, the writer ordered a two-person stone jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) with added cuttlefish plus 'chitang,' the chicken sweet-and-sour side, then scraped up the scorched rice at the bottom of the stone pot to finish. With its own parking lot and a self-serve bar, it's an easy stop on a trip to Ilsan Beach or Daewangam Park.

A famous spot for stone jjamppong in Ulsan's Daewangam area — a Dong-gu jjamppong restaurant known for its waiting line!

My partner and I were craving something spicy today, so we said let's go get Chinese food in the Dong-gu area of Ulsan!!! and headed to Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong. I always pass by this place and see a long line at mealtimes, so I'd been wanting to try it 😏😏😏

Is parking easy? The storefront and dedicated lot

There's a big dedicated parking lot right in front, so I could visit without worrying about parking 👍👍 Since it's near Ilsan Beach, places without their own lot can be a hassle to park at, but that's never an issue at Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong!

A spacious interior that works for groups

The interior was clean and really spacious 👍 With such a big space and so many tables, it felt like a great spot for group visits too. Dong-gu, Ulsan has a lot of tourist spots, so it's a perfect place to stop by while visiting Ilsan Beach or the Daewangam Park suspension bridge!

Reading the menu — what are 'dontang' and 'chitang'?

Now the menu exploration begins with my partner! True to the name, stone jjamppong is the main event, but there's also stone jjajang (black bean noodles) on the menu, so it was honestly a tough call.

There's also a variety of side dishes with oddly named items — 'dontang' and 'chitang' 🫪 What are these? Turns out dontang is pork cutlet sweet-and-sour and chitang is chicken sweet-and-sour, so you get to dip perfectly fried pork cutlet or chicken deep into sweet-and-sour sauce — hence the naming...!

What's in the self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar was well-stocked too — there were two sections: one set up with mustard leaf kimchi, pickled radish, onion, black bean sauce and other basic side dishes to help yourself to, and a dessert corner. The dessert corner had yogurt and barley candy, perfect to grab one of on your way out after the meal 😉

Each table has a kind guide on the table-order screen showing how to enjoy the stone jjamppong and stone jjajang *_* Mix the bean sprouts with the noodles well, cut them up for easy eating, and once you're done, scrape up the scorched rice at the very end! Plus rice refills are free, so you can really eat your fill ~.~

Basic side dishes: pickled radish, onion, and black bean sauce

First the basic side dishes of pickled radish, onion, and black bean sauce came out, and then the main dish arrived right after.

Two-person stone jjamppong with added cuttlefish — how big is it?

Ta-da 💓 The visuals were absolutely amazing ㅠㅠ It even comes out still bubbling on the stone plate, so the sizzling sound was insane too. Loaded with bean sprouts — totally my style ‼️‼️‼️

I ordered the two-person size, but the amount made me go is this really for two? It was seriously generous. And the seafood was packed in so lavishly too 🥹 Several shrimp, plus squid, plus the added cuttlefish on top — absolutely amazing.

The whole squid was cut into easy-to-eat pieces too. I also tried a big bite of the shrimp, and it was totally plump and bouncy.

With so much seafood, you get to enjoy a range of textures, and the jjamppong seasoning itself was a style pretty much anyone would like without much disagreement. The savoriness was amazing! It wasn't overly intense either, which I liked even more.

How's the side dish 'chitang' (chicken sweet-and-sour)?

Chitang, the chicken sweet-and-sour side dish

This is the very novel menu item called chitang >_< I was curious, so I ordered this side right away too. The chicken was fried really solidly and firmly, and the sauces that came with it were sweet, which paired really well.

Chicken really does taste best crispy 🤭 and the inside was tender, so it was seriously delicious. Between the two sauces, the sweet-and-spicy chicken sauce was sweet in just my style haha. And this side pairs so well because that rich-plus-spicy combo is always the ultimate combination 😏😏 So it was perfect to eat alongside the main dish!

Finishing with stone-pot scorched rice and jjamppong-bap

After eating well, scraping up every last bit of scorched rice stuck to the stone plate is the finishing move 😉👍 Filling it all the way to the end with jjamppong-bap (rice mixed with jjamppong broth) left me so full 😧😧😧 We ate really, really well ❤️✌️

There are a lot of tourist spots nearby, so I thought it's a great place to stop by while you're out and about. Definitely worth a visit!
