When I’m craving a hearty meal like this, gukbap always seems to be the first thing that comes to mind. This time, I visited Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch (평안도식당 화정점) near Hwajeong Station. The address is Unit 108, 1F, 24 Hwajung-ro 104beon-gil, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and it is about a one-minute walk from the station, so the access is really great.

This time, I ordered not just sundae-guk (Korean sausage soup), but the sundae-guk set meal. The serving was generous, and I was happy to get plenty of sundae (Korean blood sausage), too.

A clean, comfortable interior
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how clean the place felt overall.

When you think of a gukbap restaurant, you might imagine somewhere a little old and crowded, but Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch was relatively neat and organized, making it an easy place to eat comfortably. It did not feel awkward to dine alone, and there were tables, so it also seemed like a good spot for office workers at lunchtime. The staff were kind, and aprons were available, which was nice because I did not have to worry about splashing soup or sundae on my clothes.

A filling sundae-guk set meal
The menu I ordered was the sundae-guk set meal! Even the basic side dishes came out quite generously, so ordering just one bowl of gukbap felt like having a proper full meal.

One of the biggest strengths here is that you can have unlimited refills of sundae, liver, and lung. You can take as much sundae as you like, along with liver and lung, and rice is unlimited as well, so it is a truly filling setup.

The starting portion is not small in the first place, but being able to eat more if it is not enough definitely made it feel like great value. I think anyone who loves sundae would be especially pleased.
A clean-tasting broth

If the broth in sundae-guk is too heavy or has a strong off smell, it can be hard to eat much of it. Here, though, it was clean and mild overall, so it was easy to enjoy without feeling weighed down. I tried it as served at first, then adjusted the seasoning to my taste around halfway through.

I liked adding a little perilla seed powder and saeujeot (salted fermented shrimp). The perilla seed powder adds a nutty flavor, while seasoning it with saeujeot makes the broth a little richer, so even with the same sundae-guk, it felt like a different way to enjoy it.

The sundae-guk itself came in a very generous portion, and with the rice, it really filled me up. I think it would suit people looking for gukbap near Hwajeong Station who care about portion size as much as flavor.
Great for lunch, too
Above all, another advantage of Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch is that it is open 24 hours. At lunch, you can quickly have a warm bowl of gukbap, while in the evening it also seems like a good place to have a drink with sundae or assorted offal.

For office workers especially, it seems like a good place to have a filling lunch before getting through the afternoon. It would also be nice to visit when you suddenly crave soup late at night or need a hangover meal. It struck me as a solid option for company dinners, gatherings, hangover food, or a late-night meal. A gukbap restaurant needs to feel comfortable even when you go alone, and this one did.
Generous side dishes, too
Kimchi and the basic side dishes are quietly important at a gukbap restaurant, and the sides here were generously prepared, making them great with the soup. I had a spoonful of gukbap with kimchi, then a piece of sundae lightly dipped in saeujeot, and I just kept reaching for more. At first, I wondered, “Can I finish all of this?” But once I started eating, I had somehow finished almost all of it, haha. With unlimited rice as well, this is clearly a good place for anyone with a big appetite.

Overall, it was a satisfying visit, with a clean restaurant, kind staff, generous side dishes, and hearty portions. More than anything, I liked the unlimited sundae, liver, lung, and rice, while the clean broth meant it did not feel like a gukbap place that focused only on quantity. It is really close to Hwajeong Station, so it has great access and feels like somewhere I would think of when I want a filling meal!
