Gangseo seafood restaurant for live shrimp dinner: Neoul Magok

In short

Neoul Magok is a seafood restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, with a retro pojangmacha-style setting. We shared salt-grilled live shrimp and clam soup as a family, and I ended up peeling shrimp for Hamin. Verdict: a wonderfully satisfying seafood dinner with great atmosphere.

I kept hearing that the pojangmacha street by Balsan Station is the hot place lately. Neoul Magok was already famous for aged sashimi, then word got around that its fresh shrimp dishes were great too—so I finally couldn't resist and went :)

When you think of a raw-fish restaurant around Magok and Balsan Station, you might picture a stiff, formal place. This was completely different. It had retro pojangmacha (Korean street-tent bar) vibes while still taking its seafood seriously.

Neoul Magok location and parking

It's 278 m from Balsan Station Exit 1—about a three-minute walk. Right in the heart of Gangseo's buzzy Balsan pojangmacha street, so it's easy to find :)

Park in the Magok I-Park underground lot and ask a staff member to register your parking for three free hours! Three hours of free parking in the middle of Seoul... I'm already grateful for that alone, haha.

It is incredibly popular, so be prepared to wait if you arrive without a reservation. I strongly recommend booking through Naver or Catch Table 👍

A retro pojangmacha-style atmosphere

Interior with a retro pojangmacha concept

The moment I walked in, I thought, “Oh, this place has a different vibe.” Tables covered with old newspapers, moody bulb lights, and an '80s–'90s retro pojangmacha concept—it felt a little like time travel, haha.

Outdoor seating area and restaurant atmosphere

They also run outdoor seating, so you can enjoy it outside on a nice day. In this season, an outdoor table is seriously the sweet spot!

There is also a fish tank in one corner, so freshness is basically guaranteed. The dim lighting quietly sets the mood; it is a Magok-Balsan seafood restaurant, but it also has an izakaya feel. It would be perfect for a date or a work dinner :)

They also have a wide range of drinks, including regional soju such as Donghae Soju, Hallasan, and Gangsoe infused with Jirisan energy!

And then two extra live shrimp arrived, cleaned and prepared on the house.

They steam the live shrimp and bring it out, and the portion is seriously generous.

As I peeled the shrimp, I said, “This is taking me back to our dating days,” haha.

That's right—since it had been so long since I last peeled shrimp for someone, Hamin was beside me with his hand out, waiting, haha.

What I used to give my wife when we were dating is now being received and eaten by Hamin 😂

The shrimp were springy, with a gentle sweetness that came through more with every bite. They were clean rather than fishy, so even our child ate them happily without hesitation.

The heads came separately, fried in butter. They were crispy and nutty, almost like a snack—I wanted to order just these on their own 😍

Clam soup

As you can see in the photos, the tray arrives overflowing with clams.

Clam soup piled high on a tray

Different clams, including Manila clams and marsh clams, came together with bean sprouts and minari (water celery). The broth was so refreshing and deeply flavored...

The moment I ladled up a sip, I thought, “Now this is what broth should taste like.”

A ladle of clam-soup broth

The clams had been perfectly purged too—not a single grain of sand.

Dipping the shrimp briefly into the clam-soup broth doubled the savory flavor. The owner said it would taste better that way, and it was true, haha.

Pros and one small drawback

  • You get both retro pojangmacha vibes and quality seafood.
  • The live shrimp is prepared for you, and butter-fried heads are included.
  • The clam-soup broth was deep and refreshing, and the clams were perfectly purged.
  • Outdoor seating is available for pleasant-weather days.
  • Underground parking is free for 3 hours.
  • Outdoor seating is first come, first served, so go early.

A Balsan Station seafood restaurant for these days

  • For anyone wanting drinks with fresh seafood dishes
  • For couples or work groups who love a retro atmosphere

I never expected peeling shrimp to bring back memories of our dating days, haha. At least not until Hamin jumped in halfway through, lol.

The firm, sweet live shrimp and the deep, refreshing clam-soup broth—those two things alone made this dinner more than happy :) If you are looking for a seafood restaurant around Magok and Balsan Station and want atmosphere too, go to Neoul Magok.

100% willing to return. Next time, I plan to try the full aged-sashimi platter and Jjapa Fry, haha.
