Dongdaemun handmade burgers with jambon: 1986 Shibuya Burger

In short

1986 Shibuya Burger is a handmade burger restaurant near Kyung Hee University’s Seoul campus in Hoegi-dong, Dongdaemun, Seoul. I had the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger and Shibuya Red Hot-Plate Cheese Burger sets for lunch; the salty jambon and table-side melted cheese stood out, along with the free chips while waiting.

While looking for lunch near Kyung Hee University’s Seoul campus in Hoegi-dong, I visited 1986 Shibuya Burger (1986시부야버거). It is a handmade burger restaurant decorated around a Shibuya theme, and this time I ordered a burger with jambon and another served with melted cheese on a hot plate as sets.

How do you get there from Hoegi Station?

The restaurant is on the first floor at 5 Kyungheedae-ro 1ga-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It is about a 10-minute walk from Exit 1 of Hoegi Station. The hours listed in the original post were 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, with last orders at 8:30 PM. Ask the restaurant about parking.

I spotted the large sign with the restaurant name. A Kyung Hee University handmade burger banner and a route-map-style sign linking Hoegi, Shibuya, and Kyung Hee University stood in front of the entrance, making it easy to find.

What is the atmosphere like inside?

Above the ordering counter, there was a sign modeled after a Shibuya Station route sign.

The tables were spaced comfortably. Retro comic posters, city-pop-style illustrations, and character fabric posters covered the walls, giving me things to look at while eating.

What can you eat while waiting?

While waiting after ordering, I could have free potato chips and shrimp chips called “Shibuya otoshi” (a small snack served while waiting). There were six sauces, including honey, garlic, truffle, and white sauce, each with a label. It was fun switching between the sauces.

Hair ties were also available in a fish-shaped dish. A note encouraging diners to tie back their hair and focus on eating their burgers caught my eye.

Which sets did I order, and how much were they?

I ordered the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger set for ₩13,300 and the Shibuya Red Hot-Plate Cheese Burger set for ₩18,900 at the kiosk.

What did the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger taste like?

The Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger set came with fries and Pepsi. The burger contained a thick slice of jambon (cured ham).

When I picked it up, the jambon, cheese, and patty were layered inside. The savory flavor of the jambon went well with the juicy patty, while sautéed onions added more flavor.

How do you eat the hot-plate cheese burger?

The Shibuya Red Hot-Plate Cheese Burger was a signature menu item served with cheese melted on a hot plate. I found the way the burger was stood upright on the hot plate memorable.

Using a fork, I stretched the melted cheese from the hot plate and placed it on top of the burger. Adding the cheese myself at the table was fun too.

How was the side dish?

I also had the fried side dish. It was crisp outside and filled with cheese. When I cut it open, the cheese stretched in long strands.

For this lunch, I especially remembered the combination of jambon and patty, and adding hot-plate cheese myself. I thought it would be a good place to stop by for lunch alone or with friends near Kyung Hee University, or when wanting burgers on a date in Hoegi.
