Hamburger lunch in Dongdaemun, Seoul: 1986 Shibuya Burger
In short
1986 Shibuya Burger is a hamburger restaurant near Kyung Hee University’s main gate in Dongdaemun, Seoul. I shared a Shoyu Mushroom Burger set and a Shibuya Red Teppan Cheese Burger set for lunch; the mushroom burger was soft and savory, while the cheese burger was rich but somewhat greasy. The spacious, tidy dining room and self-serve chips and barley tea stood out.

I went to 1986 Shibuya Burger (1986시부야버거) for a hamburger lunch near Hoegi Station. I ordered the Shoyu Mushroom Burger and Shibuya Red Teppan Cheese Burger as sets and shared them.

Where is it, and what is the dining room like?
The restaurant is on the first floor at 5 Gyeonghuidae-ro 1ga-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, in the food alley near Kyung Hee University’s main gate. The original post describes it as about a three-minute walk from the university’s main gate and about five minutes from Hoegi Station.

Once inside, the dining room was more spacious than I expected. It had a modern, tidy overall feel.

Ghibli and animation posters were hung around the walls.

Near the counter was an electronic display board modeled after Shibuya Station. Along with the posters, it added character to the space.

What is available at the self-service bar?
One area had items useful during a meal, including straws, wet wipes, tissues, and hair ties.

Elsewhere, there was a refresh bar where I could help myself to sauces and snacks.

Sauces, pickles, and jalapeños were available.

There were also potato chips fried twice. I liked being able to bring something to have alongside the burgers from the self-service bar.

There were snacks as well as potato chips.

Barley tea, palate-cleansing candy, and refresh kits with mouthwash and dental floss were also available. I remember the wide range of items for before and after the meal.

How do you order, and how much are the sets?
I ordered and paid at the kiosk in front of the counter. After eating, diners return their trays to the return station beside the counter. The in-store restroom was tidy as well.

Burgers could be ordered à la carte, as combos, or as sets. Classic options included the Mozza Hash Burger and Platter Jambon Burger, while signature options included the Double Jambon Wagyu Burger and Teppan Cheese Burger. Sides included fries, wedge fries, sweet potato fries, and salad.

At the time of my visit, the Shoyu Mushroom Burger and Shibuya Grilled Shrimp Burger were introduced as new menu items.

I ordered the Shoyu Mushroom Burger set for ₩13,900 and the Shibuya Red Teppan Cheese Burger set for ₩18,900. I could choose the drink and side for each set at the kiosk.

What were the potato chips like while waiting for the burgers?
I picked up disposable plastic gloves from the self-service bar to use while eating the burgers. I also brought back some potato chips to eat while waiting.

I brought back some barley tea to drink, too.

With jalapeños, pickles, and sauces on the table, I started with the potato chips. Their crisp texture suited my taste, and I kept reaching for them when dipped in sauce.

How rich and greasy is the Red Teppan Cheese Burger?
The Shibuya Red Teppan Cheese Burger set arrived first. I chose cider as the drink and salad as the side.

The cheeseburger sat on sizzling cheese topped with a spicy sauce. There was plenty of cheese, so wrapping it around the burger gave it a strong cheese flavor.

It was best to eat it before the cheese hardened. If sharing several burgers, I would suggest starting with this one.

Eating the burger with the cheese could feel a little greasy at times. A bite of salad helped cut through that richness. The ricotta on the salad was mild, so I was happy with the side choice.
What does the Shoyu Mushroom Burger taste like?
I ordered the Shoyu Mushroom Burger set with sparkling water and cheese sticks.

The bun was stamped with the Shibuya logo. A beef patty was topped generously with cheddar, sautéed onions, and mushrooms, and it was soft to bite into.
The soy sauce base made it nutty and savory. It reminded me of soy sauce-based dishes I had eaten in Japan, and it suited my usual preference for mushrooms. The wasabi mayo helped cut through the richness.
The order came with two cheese sticks, so we shared one each. They were fried with a savory flavor, and I dipped them in sauce from the self-service bar.
What should you know before visiting?
The original post lists hours as daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with last orders at 8:30 PM. On-site parking is unavailable; the original post directs visitors to nearby private or public parking lots. Takeout and delivery are also available.
At this lunch, the soft, savory Shoyu Mushroom Burger contrasted clearly with the Teppan Cheese Burger’s intense cheese flavor. The Teppan Cheese Burger could be greasy, so the salad was a good match. The spacious, tidy room and self-service bar for potato chips and barley tea made for a satisfying meal.
