Old kimchi mackerel stew brunch with Udo peanut makgeolli: Jungmun
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel ssam-bap (wrapped rice) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju. Opening at 9:30am, the writer went for a late brunch with the old kimchi mackerel stew + abalone hot stone rice set for two (₩36,000) and abalone sea urchin seaweed soup, paired with Udo peanut makgeolli and Jeju ale beer. Between the self-serve side dish bar, free abalone porridge before noon, and a stroll through the garden after, this is a strongly recommended Jungmun breakfast course.

We took a taxi over, and the entrance path was lined with flowers, so pretty haha. If you come in spring it'd probably be a whole flower field haha. The restaurant was way bigger than I expected, so I thought "oh, this must be a good spot~" and sure enough the taxi driver confirmed it's a well-known place haha. A place approved by the taxi driver himself... that's basically a 100% delicious guarantee haha.

Looking back, such a romantic road leading to a mackerel ssam-bap place... haha.

There's a big parking lot right in front too, so it looked really convenient if you're driving. There's also an annex building behind it — turns out it's a huge restaurant!

The inside is just as spacious and clean!
Menu and prices

We ordered the old kimchi mackerel stew + abalone hot stone rice set for two, ₩36,000. There are also 3- and 4-person sets, and besides the stew there's grilled mackerel or grilled tilefish too. Grilled mackerel + abalone hot stone rice is ₩18,000, grilled tilefish + abalone hot stone rice is ₩30,000.

Abalone porridge is ₩15,000, but it's free if you go before noon! Go in the morning and just eat it for free haha!! Grilled abalone (8 pieces) is ₩30,000, and abalone sea urchin seaweed soup (rice sold separately) is ₩15,000. We were curious about the sea urchin seaweed soup so we added it as a side too.
Cola is ₩2,000. They also had hallabong and peanut makgeolli, and since we were in Jeju we had to try one haha. Peanut makgeolli is ₩6,000.

Jeju ale beer is ₩8,000.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar
All the side dishes were tasty and clean-tasting. The seaweed was also so good!! Wrapping the abalone hot stone rice in seaweed with a little soy sauce dip is amazing... The pumpkin salad was good too, and the soft tofu was clean and tasty as well.

The Udo peanut makgeolli came out first. Nutty and sweet~~

And at the self-serve bar there were even more side dishes — japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) and stir-fried pork, both really delicious too. Why is everyone's cooking here so good!! haha
And the abalone porridge! If you get a coupon on Naver you can have it for free — it's a deep, rich green porridge.
There was also doenjang soup and sikhye (sweet rice punch). I meant to have the house-made sikhye for dessert but totally forgot, ugh, so sad.
Basic side dishes and wrap greens are also unlimited refill from the self-serve bar! Right before the mackerel stew comes out, a staff member brings you a fresh set of wrap greens like this!
Old kimchi mackerel stew and abalone hot stone rice
And then out came the mackerel stew and the sea urchin seaweed soup~ There's a whole piece of old kimchi sitting right on top. The visuals are wild... Cut it up with tongs and scissors and plump mackerel is hiding underneath haha.

The mackerel is so plump and meaty. And the old kimchi seasoning isn't harsh at all, it's just so delicious... This is easily in my top 2 dishes from this whole Jeju trip! It's already great just spooned over rice, but eating it wrapped in a leaf was seriously amazing too. At first I was skeptical about mackerel as a wrap, but since that's how they eat it in Jeju I figured I'd try it once — and it was so good I kept wrapping bite after bite haha. This is genuinely a specialty dish!?

The hot stone rice was packed with abalone~ they immediately scooped it into a bowl and poured hot water into the stone pot.

So good, seriously... the mackerel piece was so big I felt like I ate a whole bowl of rice with just one chunk haha.
The forgotten sea urchin seaweed soup... haha. The soup was tasty too, but the mackerel stew was so shockingly good that, sorry soup, you got pushed aside.

Such plump, chubby mackerel ~~
This is the free abalone porridge I got — sorry, but this got pushed aside too haha. The mackerel stew wins by a landslide haha.
I even properly finished off the scorched rice water and left completely stuffed.
Souvenir corner and coffee vending machine
They also sell souvenirs like these inside the restaurant

There's a coffee vending machine too. I regret not having coffee or sikhye while I was there, ugh.

A garden stroll after the meal
And then there's the highlight of the place — the garden. It's beautifully landscaped, so walking a loop around it after eating helps with digestion haha. It's too hot right now so there weren't many flowers, but I bet it's absolutely gorgeous during flower season.

I made sure to snap a proof shot wherever there were flowers haha. We just went for breakfast and ended up shocked at how delicious the mackerel ssam-bap was... Strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a good restaurant in Jungmun!!
