Family weekday lunch, sold-out mackerel: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju, serving braised mackerel and ssam-bap (lettuce-wrap rice) set meals. Visiting on a weekday lunch with her husband and child, the writer ordered the old kimchi mackerel stew with abalone hotpot rice set for two, since the day's 30-serving limit of boneless flowering mackerel with old kimchi was already sold out. Between the 16-dish self-serve bar and the sprawling garden, it made for a satisfying family meal with a kid in tow.

Signature photo of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

After a string of greasy meals on our Jeju trip, I was craving something clean and comforting, so I went looking for a place to eat near Jungmun. That's how I ended up at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, a well-known spot for both hearty breakfasts and full set meals, with my husband and kid in tow!

Even the driveway into the restaurant was lined with a long stretch of soft pink roses. There's a huge garden on site, about 3,500 pyeong, and the scenery was so nice we didn't feel like we needed to visit any other sightseeing spot. Apparently pink muhly grass starts blooming in September, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit!

Large parking lot in front of the garden

The parking lot out front was also huge, so parking was very convenient.

Table seating in the spacious dining hall

Walking into the main building, there was an enormous, comfortable dining hall with plenty of table seating. Even though it wasn't quite noon on a weekday, plenty of guests were already there enjoying their meals.

The walls were covered with autographs from various celebrities, and the ordering pad even had a photo of comedian Park Myeong-su enjoying a meal there, which only raised my expectations haha.

A 16-dish self-serve bar and free morning abalone porridge

In the self-serve corner, there was a neatly arranged spread of 16 side dishes and tableware — japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), black pork stir-fry, abalone porridge, homemade sikhye (sweet rice punch), ssam vegetables, and more.

Apparently if you visit between 9am and noon and show a Naver Place notification coupon, they'll give you rich abalone porridge for free. The black pork stir-fry and abalone porridge I brought back were just as good as a main dish, so I basically had a whole bowl of extras.

The handmade black pork cutlet had a super crispy coating and a thick cut of meat inside, so it was a perfect fit for my kid.

Plump-fleshed old kimchi mackerel stew

We ordered the old kimchi mackerel stew with abalone hotpot rice set for two. Sadly, the boneless flowering mackerel with old kimchi, which is limited to 30 servings a day, was already sold out, so we didn't get to try it. Sigh.

When the old kimchi mackerel stew arrived, we cut the old kimchi into big pieces with scissors and paired it with the mackerel. The kimchi wasn't harshly spicy, just pleasantly tangy, and the mackerel had plump flesh with absolutely no fishy taste — pure freshness. My husband, who normally doesn't care for fish dishes, ended up wrapping the mackerel in kimchi like a ssam and eating it with real enthusiasm, which honestly surprised me haha.

For the abalone hotpot rice, after scooping out the rice topped generously with abalone, we poured hot water over the leftover crust to make nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea), and the broth was so savory it made for the perfect finish.

After the meal, we had a sweet cup of sikhye from the self-serve bar and took a stroll through the pretty rose garden — an all-around excellent lunch.

  • A pink rose-lined driveway and a huge garden that blooms with pink muhly grass in September
  • A spacious lot with room for tour buses, plus a comfortable dining hall
  • A generous self-serve bar with black pork stir-fry, japchae, abalone porridge, homemade sikhye and more
  • Free rich abalone porridge with a coupon before noon
  • Mackerel stew with old kimchi, plump fish, no fishy taste at all
  • Abalone hotpot rice with a savory nurungji sungnyung to finish
  • Crispy, thick black pork cutlet — great for a meal with kids

My husband, who normally isn't into fish dishes, went as far as wrapping it in ssam and eating it happily, and there was plenty for my kid to enjoy too — it was a satisfying meal. If you're craving a hearty Korean meal in Jungmun, Jeju, or looking for a family-friendly restaurant with a big parking lot and garden, I'd recommend Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap~
