Fried-batter topping on fried rice and beer at Yongsan tteokbokki spot

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (Korean rice cake stew) restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, that started as a street cart in 2004. On a Sunday at 1pm the wait was about 10 minutes, and a couple ordered the full course: two servings of instant tteokbokki, two draft beers, and fried rice topped generously with crispy fried batter bits from the self-serve bar. Between the tteokbokki-and-beer combo and the crunchy fried-rice finish, it's a solid, low-pressure weekend lunch date spot.

The weather was so nice today that my husband and I took a long-overdue trip out to Yongsan.

A sunny day outing in Yongsan

When you're in Yongsan, there's one snack food shrine you just have to stop by, right?

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점), famous as one of Seoul's three great tteokbokki spots and the go-to name for spicy tteokbokki! I really love spicy Korean street food, so I need regular tteokbokki refills. I'd been craving that old-school instant tteokbokki you simmer yourself right at the table, bubbling away. Here's my honest review from a weekend lunch visit!

Location and hours of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

It's easily accessible on foot from both Sinyongsan Station and Yongsan Station. I wanted a beer so we took the subway. Hours run from 11:00 AM to last order at 10:40 PM, but you can still dine until midnight, so it's great for a late-night bite too.

Hyeonseonine started as a small street cart in 2004 and grew from there with huge love from customers — it now runs 8 directly operated branches nationwide! True to its slogan, "from Yongsan's pride to Korea's pride, one of Korea's three great tteokbokki," it's a Seoul tteokbokki spot that aims for the true flavor of traditional Korean street food rather than fancy flourishes!

How long is the wait on a Sunday at 1 PM?

I visited a bit past 1 PM on Sunday, September 6, 2026, just after the lunch rush. I worried we might have to wait a while, but table turnover is super fast given the nature of the menu, so we only waited about 10 minutes before being seated! Even on weekends the wait isn't long, so you can visit without worrying too much about lines.

Stepping inside, I noticed the high ceilings and the clean, spacious layout. The place was buzzing with lively energy from customers! On one wall, there's a whole history of Hyeonseonine's street cart days along with clips from various TV appearances!

Instant tteokbokki for two + two draft beers + fried rice

Hyeonseonine's original spicy tteokbokki set and mild version are both super famous, but we went with the instant tteokbokki for two, the kind you simmer down at the table until the broth thickens. And of course, no visit is complete without two cold draft beers and a fried rice finish — we ordered the full course!

Not long after ordering, a big hot pot arrived, loaded with instant tteokbokki. It was packed with chewy rice cakes, tender fish cakes, cabbage, chewy noodles and glass noodles that soak up the sauce nicely, and egg. As it started bubbling away on the table burner, that spicy-savory sauce smell hit my nose and got my mouth watering. The longer it simmered, the richer the broth got, with the seasoning soaking right into the rice cakes — the visual alone was a work of art!

Self-serve fried batter bits: the key trick

There's one absolutely-do-not-miss trick unique to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch! At a self-serve bar set up in one corner of the restaurant, you can help yourself to as much nutty, crispy fried batter (twigim-garu, leftover fried batter bits) as you want.

This fried batter stuff is seriously magical! The first way to use it: pile it generously on top of the tteokbokki broth like a topping. When you dip a spoonful of the thick, spicy-sweet broth with the crispy batter bits along with the rice cake, the nutty crunch mixes in and makes the tteokbokki flavor even richer.

The freshly fried yakki-mandu (fried dumplings) were already crispy and delicious on their own, but pairing them with the batter bits and broth doubled the nuttiness!

Tteokbokki and draft beer, the perfect combo

Holding up our cold draft beer glasses, my husband and I cheersed. One bite of spicy tteokbokki, one bite of crispy nutty fried batter, then a sip of the sharp, fizzy draft beer — all the stress and fatigue from the week just melted away.

Tteokbokki and beer really is a match made in heaven.

The fried-rice finish: fried batter topping is the key

After eating the tteokbokki down to satisfaction, there's one highlight you can never skip — fried rice time!

Fried rice with seaweed flakes and kimchi before mixing into the broth

Mix rice loaded with seaweed flakes and kimchi into the leftover broth, press it down flat against the bottom of the pot, then pile another generous helping of the fried batter from the self-serve bar on top — that's the ultimate key trick!

The slightly crisped scorched rice, the nutty seaweed flakes, the sweet corn kernels, and the crunchy fried batter bits all came together in my mouth, and I genuinely gasped. On top of the spicy, thick sauce base, adding that crunchy texture made every last spoonful burst with savory flavor. Even full, I couldn't put my spoon down and scraped the pot clean to the bottom.

Worth it as a Yongsan date course?

If you're looking for a great Yongsan Station snack restaurant or a low-pressure date course, I highly recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch without hesitation! Even during weekend peak hours, tables turn over quickly so there's little wait pressure, and the clean, well-managed atmosphere made for a pleasant meal. Deep, spicy instant tteokbokki, a cold draft beer, and a fried-rice finish with self-serve fried batter — nothing was missing from this perfect weekend lunch.
