No-wait weekday dinner set for two at Gangneung's Gossi's Makguksu
In short
Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a three-floor makguksu (buckwheat noodle) and sundubu restaurant right across from Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. Visiting after 7pm on a weekday meant no wait for a second-floor sea-view table, where the two-person set (mul-makguksu, perilla oil makguksu, and boiled pork) plus an avocado keto buckwheat gimbap and sikhye stood out, especially the kelp-and-soy-sauce broth. A great stop to pair with a Gangmun Beach visit.

I'd been curious about Gossi's Donghae Makguksu for a while, so on a trip to Gangneung I finally made it to the main branch right in front of Gangmun Beach 😋
Parking
You can park at Gangmun Beach public parking lots 1 or 2 — the first hour is free by default, and the restaurant offers an extra 1.5 hours free too 👍🏻
- ✔️ Leave before 11am
- ✔️ Enter after 6pm
Apparently parking is free in these cases too, so keep that in mind :)
Inside the restaurant and the ocean-view seats

The restaurant spans 1st to 3rd floors — the 1st floor is the coziest, while the 2nd and 3rd floors are better if you want the ocean view while you eat!

It's such a famous spot that there were tons of celebrity autographs on the wall.

If there's a wait, you just register at the CatchTable kiosk on the 1st floor.

There was also a Gangwon-do gift corner selling all sorts of local specialty products! ✔️ Free shipping for orders over ₩50,000.
This is the 2nd floor where I sat.
The 3rd floor has floor-to-ceiling windows too! With up to 100 seats, it'd be great for a group visit too 😮 I went after 7pm on a weekday and got seated fast with no wait haha (last order is 8pm).
The menu

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu in Gangneung has buckwheat makguksu, kalguksu, sundubu, buckwheat cheese rolls, keto buckwheat gimbap, boiled pork, and plenty of side dishes, so whether you're in the mood for something cold or warm, there's something for everyone ~~

They also have a ton of alcohol, from Gangwon-do makgeolli to local specialty liquors!
Basic side dishes
The basic side dishes are kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), and pickled radish, and there's a self-serve bar so you can refill as much as you like.
Can a makguksu restaurant really have a view this good lol 🌊 Watching Gangmun Beach through the window while waiting for our order — so romantic.
What we ordered

The first drink to arrive! They had sikhye (sweet rice punch) too, which was great — with rice grains floating in it, it was exactly the sweet sikhye you picture when you hear the word.

Avocado keto buckwheat gimbap (₩8,500)
Gimbap (seaweed rice roll) at a makguksu restaurant? You might wonder, but Gossi's doesn't just serve regular gimbap — they sell keto buckwheat gimbap!!

Since the buckwheat gimbap is a popular item too, I tried it — instead of rice, it's rolled with black-vinegar-aged buckwheat noodles, vegetables, avocado, and nut toppings, and the sauce especially had such deep umami that I kept reaching for more with my chopsticks 🥢 Because the noodles are aged with black vinegar, they don't get soggy over time and stayed springy and delicious 🥹👍🏻

Two-person set (₩37,000)
We ordered the two-person set! It lets you try a meal for two plus boiled pork together, so it's actually pretty good value !!!

Mul-makguksu (cold noodles in broth)
This isn't the typical dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth style you'd expect — it's a kelp-and-soy-sauce based broth simmered down for deep umami! It comes with a spicy relish too, but you can ask to leave it out if you don't want it haha.

You can taste the broth first and then add vinegar, mustard, and sugar if you like, but I preferred it plain!✨

The noodles were soft yet chewy, and mixed with the relish they turned slightly spicy and incredibly addictive — I still think about Gossi's broth,,ㅠ_ㅠ

Perilla oil makguksu
Gossi's perilla oil makguksu apparently uses 100% domestic organic perilla oil cold-pressed by master producer Kim Yang-hui in Yangyang, and the distinctively nutty, rich aroma really came through!!

With the clean, savory buckwheat noodles plus the nutty perilla oil, the flavor was next level — for perilla oil makguksu, adding mustard or vinegar changes the flavor, so it's best eaten plain if you can haha.

Adding a splash of broth halfway through is also a nice twist! The broth here is just so good across the board 🥹 Now I get why it's a spot Gangneung locals recommend,,,⭐️

Boiled pork
You can't have makguksu without boiled pork~~ It came with scallion kimchi and pollock sikhae (fermented pollock relish), and the meat was soft and moist — a great pairing with the makguksu!

Clean-tasting boiled pork with the sweet-and-sour pollock sikhae on top — absolute honey combo!! 👍🏻
Overall thoughts on Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch in Gangneung

So that was my visit to Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch — the makguksu here was so good I'd want to come back every time I'm in Gangneung ⭐️ It's been on TV multiple times and is well known among locals, so if you're looking for a spot Gangneung locals recommend, it's a great one to pair with a Gangmun Beach itinerary.
