This time my husband and I took our dog on a trip to Gangneung!

After checking out and getting hungry, we headed to Chodang Uga, a Gangneung hanwoo (Korean beef) and pork ribs restaurant known as a dog-friendly restaurant in Gangneung. It's also famous as a St. Johns Hotel restaurant, so we went in half excited, half curious haha.

It's right near St. Johns Hotel, so it's just a 1-minute walk after checking out. We could just grab our bags and go straight to eat, which made the whole trip so much easier haha. We arrived around 11am after checkout!

Chodang Uga interior & atmosphere, the St. Johns Hotel restaurant

Chodang Uga's spacious wood-toned dining hall

The moment we walked in, a wide, open space caught our eye. The wood-tone interior gave it a calm yet clean vibe.

Calm-atmosphere seating at Chodang Uga

Since St. Johns Hotel is dog-friendly, a lot of the restaurants nearby tend to be too, and this place was a dog-friendly restaurant in Gangneung where we could bring our dog in — perfect for us as a couple!!

There was a dog-friendly zone completely separated from regular seating, so we could eat comfortably without worrying about other customers!

Tables and seating in the dog-friendly zone

I was really impressed by the owner's thoughtfulness — every table in the dog-friendly zone had its own pet stroller haha.

A pet stroller placed at every table

There were also dedicated dog bowls, a trash bin, and a microwave — totally touched. I didn't get a photo of it, but there also seemed to be a private room, which looked great for a family gathering too,

In one corner, they also sell dog supplies and treats, so even if you forget something, you can pick it up on the spot — very reassuring!

We ordered two servings of the fruit-marinated pork ribs ˊᴗˋ We just told the staff what we wanted and they set everything up right away, no waiting around.

The salad bar was really well stocked too, so it was so convenient being able to refill the banchan (side dishes)!

Full spread of Chodang Uga's banchan

The banchan at Chodang Uga were genuinely excellent — this really is a Gangneung restaurant worth visiting...!

Since Gangneung is famous for Chodang sundubu (soft tofu), they served that too!

The set charcoal grill and table setting

Two servings of fruit-marinated pork ribs — how did it taste?

Not long after the charcoal was set up, the meat came out first

True to its name, the fruit-marinated pork ribs were soaked in a fruit-based sauce including Imgye apples, so even the color looked delicious.

Close-up of pork ribs soaked in fruit marinade

Even before grilling, a faintly sweet aroma rose up that really built up my expectations haha.

We grilled it golden on both sides over the charcoal and took a bite — maybe because of the fruit marinade, there was zero off-flavor, and the more we chewed, the more the savory juices burst out!!

The sweet-salty balance was spot on, so I kept reaching for more lol.

It wasn't too sweet or too salty, so my husband and I finished both servings in no time lol.

Gamja (that's our Canadian Eskimo dog's name lol) also waited quietly in the stroller,

and we as a couple could eat comfortably without worrying about anyone else — such a healing time ෆ

Why I recommend this to travelers with dogs

Being able to fill up right after checkout and head straight home made the whole route so satisfying!

If you're looking for a dog-friendly restaurant in Gangneung, or scouting restaurants near St. Johns Hotel, I highly recommend Chodang Uga!

Chodang Uga's table after finishing the meal

The banchan alone are so good, you really won't regret it. It seems like a satisfying meal not just for travelers with dogs but for family visits too. Next time I'm in Gangneung, I'm definitely trying the udae galbi ˊᴗˋ 100% return visit intended :)
