Side dishes and the free kimchi stew at Mapo Mokjang

Basic side dishes: lettuce, pickles, and onion sauce
Lettuce, pickles, onion sauce

After ordering, they bring out lettuce for wraps along with pickles and onion sauce that go well with beef. Adding pickles and onion sauce while eating the ribs makes the flavor even better.

Garlic, cabbage salad, and bean sprout scallion salad

A crunchy cabbage salad also came out to whet the appetite. The bean sprout scallion salad served alongside really complemented the beef ribs too.

Charcoal placed on the table
Charcoal

Hot charcoal is brought to the table right away. Ribs grilled over charcoal pick up a subtle smoky aroma, which built up the anticipation even more.

Pork kimchi stew served in a metal bowl

A kimchi stew comes standard, placed on the grill as well. Served in a big metal bowl, it's a pork kimchi stew.

Filled generously with big chunks of pork, aged kimchi, and tofu, it's a real rice thief. The broth is spicy and rich, going great alongside the beef ribs.

What comes in the ₩83,000 beef tartare set?

We ordered the beef tartare set so we could have both premium beef ribs and beef tartare together. It comes with 600g of premium beef ribs and 200g of beef tartare, priced at ₩83,000.

600g of premium beef ribs served half plain, half marinated
Premium beef ribs 600g (plain, marinated)

The 600g of premium beef ribs can be ordered plain or marinated, and half-and-half is possible too, so we ordered half plain, half marinated. Just looking at the color, you could tell the quality of the raw meat was good.

The beef tartare that comes with it is tossed with pear and served with an egg yolk on top. If ordered à la carte, an extra 200g portion is ₩30,000.

The red color alone conveyed freshness, and it was a great light bite before diving into the main beef course. It had that clean yet savory flavor characteristic of beef tartare, and it was delicious.

Charcoal-grilled plain ribs, good with just salt

The premium beef ribs, well-grilled over charcoal, were full of rich juice and savory flavor even dipped in just salt. True to its reputation as a beef BBQ restaurant near Mapo Station, the tender yet chewy texture of the ribs was great.

The premium beef ribs pair well with the crunchy texture and seasoning of the onion sauce. Partway through, we wanted rice, so we ordered a bowl right away. Warm white rice with ribs and pickled peppers is an unbeatable combination.

We tried wrapping the premium beef ribs in fresh lettuce. Adding onion sauce and scallion salad to the lettuce wrap makes it crunchy and clean-tasting.

Marinated premium ribs and ₩6,000 cold noodles

After finishing the plain ribs, it was time for the marinated ribs. Ribs coated in marinade need to be grilled carefully over the charcoal so they don't burn.

Perfectly grilled marinated premium beef ribs. Sweet and salty, with the marinade soaked into the meat and a subtle charcoal aroma, they're delicious even eaten plain.

We wrapped them in lettuce with bean sprouts and shredded scallions. Since these are marinated ribs, they pair even better with fresh lettuce.

Cold noodles topped with pear and cucumber

But the combination that's a must with marinated ribs is mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles). The refreshing cold noodles with ice, priced at ₩6,000, come properly topped with pear and cucumber.

The pairing of sweet marinated ribs with cool cold noodles is a must-try. Eating the tangy cold noodles together with the marinated ribs makes for a clean finish.

Red bean shaved ice for dessert

While we were enjoying our meal, a kind staff member brought out red bean shaved ice (patbingsu). A cool, sweet dessert like this really showed the owner's thoughtfulness.

This old-school shaved ice with corn flakes and sweet rice cake powder tastes best mixed together well. From fresh tartare to delicious charcoal-grilled beef to a sweet dessert of shaved ice, it was a satisfying and enjoyable meal to end on.
