Hi, this is Juju! When you think of Chuncheon, dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and mak guksu (buckwheat noodles) come to mind, right? There are so many famous dakgalbi spots, but I couldn't find many good mak guksu places in Chuncheon. So I asked around carefully for locals' recommendations and finally found a truly can't-miss mak guksu restaurant! It has a slightly fusion vibe, so even MZ generation tastebuds will love it — let me share my review of Hyeondae Memil, a restaurant near Namchuncheon Station ෆ

A 7-minute walk from Namchuncheon Station — what about parking?
Hyeondae Memil, a Chuncheon mak guksu spot, is about a 7-minute walk from Namchuncheon Station. There's parking for about two cars in front of the restaurant, and if it's full, you can park in the nearby alley! Or there's a parking lot at Namchuncheon Station nearby, so you can park there comfortably and walk over.

The interior, renovated from a traditional hanok, radiates retro vibes from the entrance, doesn't it? Honestly, among MZ generation folks these days, mak guksu has a bit of a reputation as an older generation's food... kind of bland. But this Namchuncheon Station restaurant serves up trendy vibes and interior along with mak guksu and fusion sujebi that will win over even MZ tastebuds without fail!

Is there a wait even on weekday lunches?
There can be a wait especially during lunchtime. We visited on a weekday lunch, and if we'd come just a little later, we might have had to wait too~

The vibe inside the renovated hanok
Once you step inside, you get the same hip atmosphere you felt from outside! The renovated hanok keeps its old-world quietness while still feeling hip and sophisticated, which is probably why people of all ages come here.

If dakgalbi feels a bit heavy for your Chuncheon trip, how about another local specialty, mak guksu? Start your trip with a delicious, filling meal at Hyeondae Memil near Namchuncheon Station ෆ

Seating and reservations
There were a good mix of tables for 4 and tables for 2! Whether you're meeting a friend, on a date, having lunch with coworkers, or traveling with family, Hyeondae Memil near Namchuncheon Station is a satisfying meal for any occasion.

There's no Naver reservation, but you can reserve by phone, so keep that in mind!

Almost all the tables are Western-style seating, but there's one floor-seating table too! The colorful cushions were pretty and the vibe was pretty great haha
Near the entrance counter, there was even an old-school arcade machine! It's not just the interior — every little detail at Hyeondae Memil near Namchuncheon Station carries that retro feel.

Three kinds of makgeolli and a squishy keyring
Three kinds of makgeolli (rice wine) that pair well with mak guksu! They sell three types made with Gangwon specialties like corn and potato, perfect to go with your noodles.
And near the entrance, they also sell squishy toys and keyrings! There's also mouthwash and mint candy for a refreshed feeling after your meal. The owner's got great taste, haha.
I got myself one of the squishies too...! The potato squishy is soft all around, no crunch, but I had a lot of fun playing with it.

Menu and how to order
You can comfortably order from the tablet at your table. Every menu item has a photo, which really helped with choosing what to eat.

Hyeondae Memil near Namchuncheon Station. Mak guksu and sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) are the main dishes, but they also sell buckwheat dumplings and pancakes, potato pancakes, pork stew, and more! A lot of young people these days say buckwheat dishes don't really appeal to them, but this fusion-style menu is very satisfying even for MZ tastebuds.

By the way, it's a prepay restaurant, so if you're paying with Zero Pay or picking up takeout, just call a staff member!
On one side of the restaurant, there's a self-serve bar with paper cups, small plates, hair ties and more, so you can easily grab anything you need for your meal.
They first brought out a side dish of kimchi! Crunchy napa cabbage with a spicy seasoning — it was great to eat a bite here and there while having the mak guksu.

Ordering sous vide pork tenderloin, bibim mak guksu, and cream sujebi
Here's what we ordered! They took a little time to prepare the food, but it wasn't too long a wait, so I took some photos in the meantime. We ordered three dishes: sous vide pork tenderloin, bibim mak guksu, and cream sujebi!

The plating alone was beyond what I expected! I'd pictured mak guksu as a bit rustic-looking, but this wasn't that at all — max MZ energy...! It has a Western-meets-Korean fusion feel, making it a Namchuncheon Station spot that everyone from kids to adults will love.

How the bibim mak guksu tastes
Let me show you the bibim mak guksu first! Sweet and spicy sauce with neatly placed sprouts on top — the color combination really stands out. It's mouthwatering just from the visuals.

Between the buckwheat noodles that break apart cleanly, the sweet-and-spicy sauce wraps around your mouth with savory depth without being overwhelming — it's not an artificial spicy taste but a clean one, so I kept reaching for more.

How the buckwheat cream sujebi tastes
No need to say much about the cream sujebi either. The combination of nutty buckwheat and thick, creamy sauce was a total hit for younger tastebuds!

The sujebi dough is made with savory buckwheat, making it even chewier and more delicious. The cream flavor was great too, and with bacon added in, it was even more delicious. Even with all that cream, it never got heavy!

Sous vide pork tenderloin
And we also tried the sous vide pork tenderloin together. Maybe because of the low-temperature sous vide cooking method, the meat had no dryness at all — it was very moist and delicious. The plating looked like a fine dining restaurant too, right? Haha. Of course, meat is hard to go wrong with, and it was clean-tasting and delicious, so people of all ages and genders would be satisfied.

It's delicious on its own, but it's also great paired with the yuzu sauce they provide, or with the mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad), or even together with the mak guksu.

Would I go back?
That was my review of a delicious mak guksu meal at Hyeondae Memil near Namchuncheon Station. I love that it's close to the station, and both the taste and atmosphere were perfect, so I'm planning to come back again! If you're looking for a great mak guksu spot in Chuncheon, give Hyeondae Memil a try ෆ
