When you head to Chuncheon, Gangwon, for a romantic drive or train trip, buckwheat dishes are the ultimate soul food you simply cannot miss, right? I heard that Hyeondae Memil, one of Chuncheon's hot spots, serves distinctive buckwheat dishes in a modern, stylish Korean dining space rather than an ordinary makguksu restaurant, so off I went! The space itself felt special, with contemporary polish softly blended with traditional Korean warmth. I tried the tangy-sweet bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles), an incredibly crisp-outside, tender-inside truffle potato pancake with a gentle truffle aroma, and buckwheat dough soup with such rich, spicy broth that it made me want rice, too.

Hyeondae Memil location, parking, and hours
It is on the first floor at 29-1 Namchun-ro 5beon-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon State. It is within walking distance of Namchuncheon Station, so it is easy to reach from the city center, and travelers arriving on the Gyeongchun Line ITX can comfortably walk here, too. For parking, use the designated street-parking lines in the nearby alleys or a nearby public parking lot.

True to its reputation as a great restaurant, it was already full of diners when I visited during a meal period, and people kept streaming in even while I ate. Seeing everyone from local regulars to young couples flocking through the door, I knew I had come to the right place.

A date spot filled with Korean charm
As soon as you open the door, traditional Korean latticework, solid-wood furniture, and soft lighting come together to create a cozy, warm mood. Unlike the rough-and-ready feel of a typical buckwheat noodle place, it has the neat, atmospheric feel of fusion Korean dining, making it a wonderful Chuncheon date spot for a quiet meal with your partner. The tables were clean and comfortably spaced, so I felt at ease the entire time.

Kiosk order and bill
You can order straight away from the simple self-service kiosk at each table or by the entrance. Looking over the full menu, I found a wide range of Korean dishes, from special makguksu and warm noodles to dough soup, sous vide boiled pork, and hot pots.

How were the bibim makguksu, potato pancake, and dough soup?
Hyeondae Memil bibim makguksu
The Hyeondae Memil bibim makguksu (₩8,600) immediately caught my eye with its special sauce and buckwheat noodles. The moment I mixed it up with my chopsticks and took a big bite, a tangy, sweet, spicy savoriness filled my mouth! It was neither excessively intense nor dull; the subtle buckwheat fragrance and fresh sauce came together beautifully, enough to wake up a palate tired from traveling. It was a deeply accomplished bowl that truly deserved its reputation as Chuncheon makguksu.
Truffle potato pancake
The truffle potato pancake (₩16,600) made me gasp the moment it arrived! A generous topping of house-made truffle sauce and Grana Padano cheese sat over a crisp shredded-potato pancake, and the subtle truffle aroma brushing past my nose added a luxurious touch. With every bite, the crunch was so loud it practically hit my ears—it was the ultimate crisp outside, tender inside experience. Especially when I wrapped a piece of crisp pancake with the tangy bibim makguksu, it was pure heaven!
Buckwheat dough soup
Honestly, the buckwheat dough soup (₩11,600) was the hidden kick of this meal, far better than I expected! The broth arrived filling an earthenware pot and was so rich and thick that I could not put down my spoon. It was perfectly seasoned without the muddiness of a gochujang (Korean chili paste) base, while the finish was pleasantly spicy and warming—it really soothed me from the inside out. The chewy, springy buckwheat dough pieces had soaked up the rich broth, making this a wonderfully filling delicacy.
My overall take on all three dishes
From textbook tangy-sweet bibim makguksu to a crisp potato pancake worthy of an upscale restaurant, plus spicy, thick dough soup that warmed and filled me up, this place showed perfect balance. If you want a special buckwheat spread somewhere atmospheric, or a satisfying meal near the train station, I wholeheartedly recommend Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon, a standout makguksu restaurant near Namchuncheon Station!
