Cheongju Chinese restaurant Julseoneun Banjeom: spicy pepper jjajang

In short

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae is a jjamppong and jjajang Chinese restaurant on Wolgok-gil in Gangnae-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk. On a repeat visit, three people ordered lemon tangsuyuk at 13,900 won, a large cha-dol jjamppong (beef brisket spicy noodle soup), a large spicy pepper jjajang and a bowl of rice, and ate until they were completely full. The verdict: spice lovers should order the spicy pepper jjajang, and first-timers should not skip the lemon tangsuyuk.

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae cover image

I've covered a lot of Cheongju restaurants — some I'm visiting for the first time, and some I've been to multiple times and am recommending as a personal go-to. Chinese restaurants especially are hard to pin down as truly delicious; there are so many near every home, but finding a genuinely good one? That's the tricky part, right...

But this place! This is a Chinese restaurant I keep going back to, even though it's not near my house — I make a special trip out here, so I wanted to write it up as a recommendation :) Let's get started haha!

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae: location, hours and parking

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae is a Chinese restaurant at 17-1 Wolgok-gil, Gangnae-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk. It's open 11:00 - 20:00, with a break time from 14:20 - 17:00, and closed every Sunday.

  • 📍Location: 17-1 Wolgok-gil, Gangnae-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk, South Korea — genuinely the first Cheongju Chinese restaurant that nails jjamppong
  • 📍Hours: 11:00 - 20:00 (break time 14:20 - 17:00) (closed every Sunday)
  • 📍Restroom: shared building restroom (code required!)

How long is the weekend wait?

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae does have a weekend wait, and there are plenty of chairs set up outside for waiting. Unless you live nearby in Gangnae, it looked like most people drive here!

Since the name literally means 'the restaurant people line up for,' the first time I visited I wondered, 'is that just the name, or do people actually line up?' — turns out people really do line up haha (weekend wait: yes). Personally I'd recommend coming right at the 11am opening. That said, since it's a Chinese restaurant the turnover is fast, so seats open up quickly and you don't wait too long.

Showing you the exterior first — there are a lot of chairs out front for waiting. If there's a line, you just wait here and head in when it's your turn!

There's also a cute little drawing on the outer wall, so I took a photo of it haha.

Outer wall sign noting the head chef's years of experience

The fact that they put up a sign saying the head chef has 25 years of experience says a lot — it shows the owner's genuine attachment to the place and the ongoing care put into managing it, both inside and out. With that kind of care going into every dish, of course the food is going to taste good, right? Maybe you need the mindset of 'I'm going to be the best in Korea' to become a Chinese restaurant that people actually queue for, ha...

Inside Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae and the self-serve bar

Inside Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae, there are little notes from customers stuck up all over the walls. At first I thought, 'did they collect this many autographs?'

But looking closer, they were actually notes from regular customers praising the food, like a guestbook! Haha, it was fun looking around at these while taking in the vibe of the place.

Customer note calling the restaurant a Cheongju must-visit

A lot of notes called it a Cheongju must-visit, and one person even wrote that it's the best in the world, haha.

Self-serve bar with pickled radish and scissors

Every dish is cooked fresh the moment you order, so there's a polite sign asking for patience since it can take a bit of time and dishes might not all arrive together.

There was also a simple self-serve bar where you could grab pickled radish or scissors — aprons, small plates, scissors, forks, all sorts of things available to take. Personally I feel like scissors get used a lot at Chinese restaurants, so having them right there at the self-serve bar was really convenient!

They're also running a separate receipt review event, so keep that in mind :)

What three of us ordered, and the prices

Ordering was done via mobile phone, which was convenient!

Last time I came I had the cream jjamppong, but this time I went for a straightforward order of the signature dishes.

Order summary for the meal

Isn't the price on the tangsuyuk decent? Most other Chinese restaurants start around 20,000 won on average, but here it's 13,900 won!

Lemon tangsuyuk at 13,900 won: portion and taste

The lemon tangsuyuk at Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae costs 13,900 won, but the portion was massive. Since everything is cooked fresh to order, we waited a bit before it arrived! And wow... the amount! It was seriously a lot!

Seriously, this much tangsuyuk, and using tenderloin cuts for a softer texture too, for 13,900 won??? This is a must-order, for real. Isn't the value for money on the tangsuyuk great?

Plate of lemon tangsuyuk topped with lemon

It's called lemon tangsuyuk because there's lemon on top, and apparently a bit is mixed into the sauce too. There's a slight tangy note, but it also cuts the meat's gaminess, so the balance felt really good.

It's not just tangy — the inside is seriously, seriously nutty and savory, and I was amazed how the sauce could be sweet-tangy while the inside had such a strong savory flavor. Honestly, they're really skilled at making tangsuyuk. If you're coming here, the tangsuyuk is a must!! Please try it!

Large cha-dol jjamppong: how spicy is it?

The large cha-dol jjamppong (beef brisket jjamppong) is 13,000 won, and it's made with brisket packed underneath a layer of shredded scallions. Wow... the portion of jjamppong is seriously huge. Being a cha-dol jjamppong, the whole bottom layer under the scallions was packed with brisket — the amount of meat is quite generous, so meat lovers, this... this is really the jjamppong for you

The spice level was just right for someone like me who loves spicy food, and even people who aren't great with spice would probably enjoy it, because it's not just raw capsaicin heat — it's a deliciously spicy broth made with a well-simmered stock base.

Large spicy pepper jjajang with cheongyang chili and shrimp

The large spicy pepper jjajang comes out in a big bowl-sized portion, topped generously with cheongyang chili peppers and shrimp. Whoa... the jjajang basically came out in what's practically a serving bowl? And the amount of fierce cheongyang chili on top...

But honestly, it's really spicy!! Not in a bad way though — the chilies added a nice crunchy texture, and the spice level was similar to the jjamppong, which I actually really liked. For someone like me who eats jjamppong specifically for the spice, a spicy jjajang is the best possible option!

There's also a generous amount of shrimp neatly placed on top of the jjajang — eating the shrimp along with the noodles was really tasty too.

You can see there's still a lot of sauce left even after mixing thoroughly! They give such a generous amount of sauce that you can finish it all and still have enough to mix into rice.

Ah... I want to eat it again... Looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Cheongju? This is the place, right here~~~

The noodles were also cooked a bit past chewy, so they blended richly with the sauce, and the jjajang sauce itself was just really delicious.

Was it enough food for three people?

With one lemon tangsuyuk, a large cha-dol jjamppong, a large spicy pepper jjajang, and rice, three of us ate until we were completely stuffed at Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae. This is... the holy trinity!!!

Honestly, I think a Chinese restaurant is already top-tier if it just does jjajang and jjamppong well (there are so many places where even those two are bad, ugh). This place nails the basics with jjajang and jjamppong, plus you can try newer menu items like the cream jjamppong — so if you're just looking for a solid jjajang and jjamppong, I'd recommend this place without hesitation.

Full table spread with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

And the tangsuyuk we ordered as an extra was so, so, so much better than expected, and it was cut into nice bite-sized pieces too! That also left a great impression — I mostly remember the lemon tangsuyuk for how nutty and savory it was!!

Close-up of the lemon tangsuyuk plate

Ah, I'm so stuffed. I did order the large size, but the portions here are generous to begin with, so ordering the way I did should be plenty — more than plenty, actually — for three people to eat until they're completely full.

Empty dishes on the table after the meal

If you're looking for a great Chinese restaurant in Cheongju, it's easy to park even if you drive, so I'd recommend Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae-♥
