Hapjeong café before last order: chicken steak and Basque cheesecake
In short
Seowon Angil Hapjeong is a large two-floor brunch café right in front of Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Stopping by just before last order for a first round ahead of a bar, the writer had chicken breast steak with grilled vegetables, an Americano and Mom's Basque cheese cake for a total of 40,400 won. The mushroom cream sauce, the well-charred vegetables and the melt-in-the-middle Basque cheesecake made every order at Seowon Angil Hapjeong a hit.

On my way to enjoy a good bar for once, I wanted to fill up a bit first, so I went looking for a pretty café and found a Western-food gem of a large café in Hapjeong. Seowon Angil Hapjeong, super close to Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station!

What Seowon Angil Hapjeong feels like just before last order
Seowon Angil Hapjeong is a large brunch café near Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station that spans the 1st and 2nd floors. A brunch café… you'd think it'd be bright and bustling in broad daylight, but we rushed in almost right before last order, so we got to eat in a nice quiet space.

But… the moment we walked in and saw the interior, I was genuinely amazed. Does the owner just have amazing taste or what?!

Lush green plants as an accent point, colorful chairs, and that calm overall wood-tone flooring!
I don't know the first thing about interiors, but just sitting there felt healing.
You can grab water, sauces, etc. from the self-serve bar.
The view from where we sat… every table is spacious with wide gaps between them, so it's a comfortable layout for chatting.
The 2nd floor runs until 6 PM on weekdays and 7 PM on weekends. I went after it closed so I couldn't check it out, but if the 1st floor is this nice, I bet the 2nd floor is gorgeous too.

Seowon Angil Hapjeong menu and how to order
You can view the Seowon Angil Hapjeong menu by scanning the QR code on the table. You place your order at the counter.

The first thing you see when you walk in is the bread! You can also buy the Seowon Angil sourdough separately.

The menu is also posted at the counter. There's a range of coffee, cold brew, tea, non-coffee drinks, ades, smoothies, ice cream, juice, and beer. There are also simple snacks, soup, sandwiches, salads, sandwiches, rice dishes, pasta, plates, and special menu items. For coffee, you can choose between Seowon beans and Angil beans. The Seowon Blend is fruity, floral, herbal, while the Angil Blend is dark chocolate, caramel, mild.

There's a variety of desserts too, but of course the Basque cheesecake was what caught my eye.

There are sandwiches too.
Looked like you could also buy the beans.
What we ordered at Seowon Angil Hapjeong and what it cost
- Chicken breast steak with grilled vegetables ₩28,000
- Americano ₩6,000
- Mom's Basque cheese cake ₩6,400
- Total ₩40,400

However I shot it, the lighting and background were just so pretty… my photography skills fell a bit short though, ugh.
Americano, 6,000 won
Naturally I got an Americano! I picked the nutty option over the acidic one, so it was rich and nutty. Almost no acidity, cool and slightly bitter — a perfect match for dessert.

Chicken breast steak with grilled vegetables, 28,000 won

It's a new menu item, and since I love both chicken breast and grilled vegetables, I gave it a try. There's a mushroom cream sauce underneath. The owner's great taste clearly applies to the food too… the plating alone is so pretty.

Anyway, the chicken breast comes as one piece cut in half, and it was definitely moist, tender, and delicious. There was a subtle char aroma throughout, and I liked that it wasn't over-seasoned.

My favorite vegetables — alba cabbage and broccoli — were grilled so well too and really delicious. Personally I think vegetables have the biggest gap between best and worst versions, but here it was genuinely great!

It's fun to pick things up one by one, and it's not overly seasoned so you can really taste the ingredients themselves. And the combination works so well… the cream sauce isn't greasy either, with the mushroom flavor spreading gently, pairing perfectly with the vegetables and chicken breast. The portion was just right — filling enough for one person or a light meal for two.

Mom's Basque cheese cake, 6,400 won

Basque cheesecake — my friend's and my absolute favorite cake! If a café has it, I pretty much always order it. The size is compact, so it wouldn't feel too heavy to enjoy alone while studying at a café either.

Reviews were all good so I had high expectations, and sure enough, the cheese flavor was great, with a subtle tang and a burst of sweetness — delicious. Basque cheesecake also varies a lot in texture and flavor from café to café, but here the center just melts away. It's soft and cloud-like in the middle, while the edges have some density and a deep cheese flavor. Delicious, as expected…

We licked the plate clean.
Is Seowon Angil Hapjeong worth a late visit?
Seowon Angil Hapjeong, a large Hapjeong café known for great Western food! The chicken breast steak and grilled vegetables paired with a soft mushroom cream sauce, the rich but never bitter Americano, and the gooey-melting Mom's Basque cheese cake — everything we ordered was genuinely delicious. Being a large café, it's open and comfortable, and above all, the café's atmosphere and plating are so pretty. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a Western-food café in Hapjeong.
