Birthday Korean BBQ lunch in Yongsan, Seoul with BYOB wine: Yukmong

In short

Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store (육몽 용산직영점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Yongridan-gil in Yongsan, Seoul, 200m from Samgakji Station Exit 1. For a friend's birthday, the writer came for a late lunch of 2 servings of Shrek galbi, 1++ Hanwoo beef tartare (yukhoe) and caviar cheese egg custard, then added whole pork skirt (galmaegisal), and a French wine bought at a convenience store was chilled with free corkage. With staff grilling the meat and plenty of 2nd-floor seating, Yukmong works well for birthday day drinking or a company dinner.

It was my friend's birthday, so we went out for the meat she loves most! The staff were so kind and the meat was so good, so here's my review of Yukmong, a Yongsan Korean BBQ spot worth knowing :)

Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store: location and opening hours

Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store (육몽 용산직영점) is less than 200 meters from Samgakji Station Exit 1. Yongridan-gil is also close to Sinyongsan and Yongsan stations, so it's walkable from those too :) And here we are in front of Yukmong!

It's open from 12:00 to 24:00 with no break time. We came for a late lunch. Grilling meat from lunchtime, go us!!

Every corner has mysterious-looking decorative props :) There are also Yukmong posters on the walls, antique in feel but packed with design.

Free corkage at Yukmong: bring your own bottle of wine

Yukmong Yongsan Direct Store lets you bring 1 bottle of wine or whiskey with free corkage. I knew that in advance, so I brought a bottle of wine :)

Extra side dishes are self-serve, so just grab what you want here! I find it more comfortable than having to ask for refills. Take only what you'll eat.

At first they set everything out for you! A nice variety of sides: seasoned radish (musaengchae), herring roe, kimchi, pickled onions, pickled radish wraps (ssambu) and scallion salad (pachae).

Grilling meat and day drinking at lunch, that's us. But it's a birthday, so we have to toast, and the corkage is free anyway.

If you ask for the wine to be chilled, they bring an ice bucket. And wine glasses too.

Today's wine: Anciens Temps, a French wine. I picked it up at CU on the way, and it's a seriously great value!! It tasted really good, honestly?!?!

The charcoal needed a little more time to get the fire going.

Ordering Shrek galbi, 1++ Hanwoo beef tartare and caviar cheese egg custard

The menu had many kinds of meat, but the signature item caught my eye!!! Shrek galbi (marinated short ribs)... I was so curious. Naver said it's a limited-sale menu, so it seemed like something you can only try here, and I ordered 2 servings. My friend loves beef tartare (yukhoe), so we also ordered the 1++ Hanwoo beef tartare. And I was curious about the caviar cheese egg custard too, so we got that!

The Shrek galbi came out right away, and what a strange look! I first thought it was basil, but they said it's a special sauce made with matcha, water dropwort (minari) and basil.

The good thing here is that the staff grill the meat for you!!! They grill it really well :)

Caviar cheese egg custard

The caviar cheese egg custard (gyeran-jjim) arrived while the meat was grilling. Top-tier looks... caviar, wow..

The egg custard was really delicious too! Luxurious, with the savory depth of cheese added, a menu I really recommend. It's a great Yongsan BBQ spot, but also an egg custard spot haha.

While the meat grilled, we sipped the chilled wine and celebrated my friend's birthday. Cheers!!!!

1++ Hanwoo beef tartare with gochujang seasoning

Just as we were about to sip the wine, the 1++ Hanwoo beef tartare came out. You pop the yolk and mix it all together.

I'd only ever had beef tartare seasoned with sesame oil, but this place does it with gochujang (red chili paste) seasoning. Oh!?!?!? The gochujang wasn't strong, and the seasoning was just right. It came with cucumber too.

Meanwhile the meat was nicely browned, and they even cut it into bite-size pieces for us.

You eat it with their special sauce, which was good too. We also wrapped it in lettuce.

Extra order: whole pork skirt (galmaegisal)

Meat is love, but this Shrek galbi is delicious!!! Partway through I craved a different kind of meat, so we ordered more. This time, whole pork skirt (tong-galmaegisal).

They grill this nicely too! The pork skirt was turning golden and juicy. When it's done, they put it in a bowl for you.

This time we ate it with wasabi and with herring roe.

For someone like me who likes clean, light flavors, the pork skirt was delicious too!!! A day of properly loading up on protein.

2nd-floor seating: is Yukmong good for group dinners?

The restroom is on the 2nd floor, so I went up and there are quite a lot of seats up there too. There's enough room that it works for a company dinner. The restroom is clean and well kept too. I finished by photographing the Yukmong Yongsan poster in the restroom!

We left stuffed full of meat. We finished the bottle of wine too. Thanks to my friend's birthday, we ate well together :)

Outside, I noticed a mural on the side of the building?!?! "The BBQ restaurant you dreamed of" haha.

Try Yukmong, the Yongsan BBQ spot that's the barbecue restaurant you dreamed of!
