Conveyor sushi in Beomgye, grilled plates while pregnant: Sushi House

Sushi House is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor of Baekdu Plaza, Pyeongchon-daero 217beon-gil, near Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi, with plates starting at 2,000 won. The writer, who was pregnant, stopped in after an OB-GYN appointment and ate grilled and cooked sushi such as grilled king prawn, egg shrimp, scallop and freshwater eel, plus the QR-order dishes cheddar cheese egg shrimp and cheese red snow crab gratin. Sushi House near Beomgye Station is a lunch spot where a pregnant diner who has to skip raw fish can still eat their fill on grilled sushi alone.

Indeogwon yakiniku after a 30-minute weekday wait: Yakiniku Pungyeong

Yakiniku Pungyeong is a charcoal-grilled beef yakiniku restaurant on Botdeul 2-gil in Uiwang, Gyeonggi, near Indeogwon Station. On a full Wednesday evening after work, the writer waited about 30 minutes in the car, then had snowflake short rib, skirt steak limited to 15 servings a day, premium short rib and 9,000-won tonkotsu miso ramen, plus prize-draw scallops, beef tartare and seaweed rice balls, complimentary dishes and a watermelon dessert. Yakiniku Pungyeong draws a line even on weekdays, so it is a beef restaurant near Indeogwon Station worth booking ahead.

Solo tonkatsu after a prenatal class near Suwon Station: Gohobi Katsu

Gohobi Katsu (고호비카츠) is a tonkatsu restaurant on Maesan-ro near Suwon Station in Suwon, specializing in domestic female pork. After a maternity class at AK Plaza Suwon Station, the writer, a hungry expectant mother, went alone and ordered the Combo (A) tenderloin and loin tonkatsu set. She liked the soft tenderloin with no gamey smell, the thick-cut loin and the wide, gently sloped underground parking. The verdict: Gohobi Katsu is a Suwon Station tonkatsu spot for a solo meal without parking worries.

Late lunch date shabu-shabu in Anyang with extra veggies: Shabu Siktak

Shabu Siktak Dongpyeon-maeul Branch (샤브식탁 동편마을직영점) is a Japanese-style shabu-shabu restaurant with table service in Dongpyeon-maeul, Dongan-gu, Anyang. On a late lunch date, the writer and her husband ordered the A-table set with extra vegetables, octopus karaage and vegetable egg porridge, and loved how the beef filled the plate right to the bottom and the soy-based house sauce with egg yolk. Shabu Siktak Dongpyeon-maeul Branch is a quiet, filling choice for a lunch date in Anyang.

Sanbon Korean BBQ: eating shabu first to manage blood sugar, Geobugi

Geobugi Dongne Gunpo Sanbon Branch (거북이동네 군포산본점) is an aged pork belly Korean BBQ restaurant near Sanbon Station in Gunpo, Gyeonggi, with window seats, group tables and a private room for about 12 people. The writer ordered the pork belly & shabu set and gamasotbap (stone-pot rice), ate the shabu-shabu first by following a fiber, protein, then carbs order, and was surprised that blood sugar rose slowly despite eating a lot. With soft-serve ice cream from the self bar for dessert, the meal came to about 50,000 won for two, making Geobugi Dongne a Sanbon pork belly spot with a good balance of portion size and variety.

Anyang brunch café after maternity photos: eggs Benedict, Eggroom

Eggroom is an egg-focused brunch café in Gwanyang-dong (Dongpyeon-maeul), Anyang. After a maternity photo shoot, the writer stopped by Eggroom at 1:30pm on a weekday for eggs Benedict, scallop oil pasta and a basil tomato ade, but popular dishes like shakshuka, French toast and egg tarts had already sold out. Eggroom's brunch is mild yet delicious and well worth it, so arrive early if you want the most popular dishes.

Korean restaurant by Baegun Lake, Uiwang: garden-view mackerel dinner

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant specializing in wood-fired grilled fish, in a standalone building on Neungan-gil near Baegun Lake in Uiwang, Gyeonggi. The writer and her husband had dinner at a garden-view window seat, ordering the mackerel and Spanish mackerel rice pot set plus stir-fried pork. The fish from the 500-degree oven was crisp outside and moist inside, and the Spanish mackerel stood out for its size and flavor. Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a grilled fish restaurant worth revisiting, well suited to family gatherings or hosting guests.

Anyang self-photo studio for a 30-week maternity shoot: Burok

Burok Self-Studio Anyang Beomgye Branch is an unmanned self-photo studio on the first basement floor of Doosan Venturedigm in the Pyeongchon and Beomgye area of Anyang. A couple at 30 weeks pregnant paid ₩45,000 for a 110-minute shoot for two, rented a maternity crop top, maternity dresses and a suit for the husband, and switched between premium backdrops while taking their own maternity photos, then selected, decorated and printed them. With no need to buy outfits and a low price, Burok Self-Studio made for a highly satisfying DIY maternity shoot.

Pyeongchon Vietnamese restaurant with a 7pm indoor wait: Pho Witch

Pho Witch is a Vietnamese restaurant on the Pyeongchon academy-street food strip in Anyang, Gyeonggi. Skipping a Vietnam trip because of pregnancy, the writer arrived after 7pm, waited in the indoor waiting area, and ordered the Siblings' Devotion pho, the sweet-and-spicy pad thai fried rice and two Pine Nara Yangji Gongju spring rolls, then won a mini vegetable spring roll in the Instagram and KakaoTalk draw. With a light, low-grease broth and spring rolls served cut in half, Pho Witch is an easy pick for an Anyang date-night dinner.

Anyang grilled fish, 4 sets with stroller access: Hwaddeugeuro

Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant in Bisan-dong, Anyang, Gyeonggi, on the 1st floor of the Blue building at Kids Mom Center on Gwanak-daero. Three adults and one elementary schooler ordered the mackerel, Atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel and spicy pork sets and shared the self-bar side dishes, soupy tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea), with high chairs on hand and easy stroller access. With room for up to 70 guests and 3 hours of free underground parking, Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is an easy pick for a family meal with kids.

Anyang bakery with pumpkin rye bread and egg tart: Milbat Bakery

Milbat Bakery Pyeongchon is a neighborhood bakery near Exit 1 of Pyeongchon Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi, where bread comes out of the oven almost around the clock. Craving flour while pregnant, the writer stopped in on the way back from a prenatal checkup and bought same-day bread: the signature devil bread (6,800 won), an egg tart, a choco s'more and pumpkin rye bread. The devil bread, crumbly like soboro outside and chewy with cream cheese inside, is worth a taxi ride back to Milbat Bakery Pyeongchon.

Friday duck jeyuk lunch at a Gwacheon duck restaurant: Deo Chadol

Deo Chadol is a duck and beef brisket restaurant on Dwitgol2-ro near Seoul Land in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, where lunch specials run 13,000–15,000 won per person. On a Friday at 11:30am the writer ordered the duck jeyuk (spicy stir-fried duck) set, the hearty duck and beef brisket soup, and an assorted seafood egg soup that was the most surprising dish of the meal. There is a wait at Deo Chadol, but tables turn over quickly, and the value is good enough to promise a return visit.
