Cheonho Station gukbap, couple's Monday sundae and offal sets: Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean rice soup) restaurant near Exit 3 of Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul, open every day of the year. A couple ate dinner at Boseung Hoegwan on a Monday evening, ordering the pork jowl suyuk (boiled pork) set with three kinds of sundae (Korean blood sausage) and the spicy, peppery offal set; the sundae and pork jowl were the highlights. With partitioned sofa booths and solo bar seats, Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a solid gukbap pick for eating alone or dining with parents.

Bangi-dong pasta jazz bar: Haeleop Trio and red pepper pork, Allegro

Allegro is an Italian restaurant with live jazz on the 3rd floor of a building on Ollimpik-ro 32-gil in Bangi-dong, Songpa, Seoul. A couple booked Allegro for 6:30 PM, before the show, and ate vongole pasta and sous vide pork neck steak while the Haeleop Trio (piano, vocals and double bass) played. With clam-packed vongole and a stage close to the tables, Allegro made for a Songpa date night worth recommending.

Konkuk Univ. ice cream shop, post-dinner matcha cones: Beurre Beurre

Beurre Beurre Konkuk University Rodeo Branch is a premium butter ice cream shop made with French butter, on Achasan-ro 30-gil near Konkuk Univ. Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. After work, the blogger and her husband had dinner at Seongsu Wandang (성수완당), then crossed the street to Beurre Beurre for single cones of the new I Love So Matcha and Choco Deep Fudge (from ₩4,700), eaten at the tables out front. With rich, Oreo-studded matcha and chewy chocolate, Beurre Beurre made a satisfying after-dinner date dessert.

Dogok-dong pie shop, a birthday gift for Dad: Hodu Kkakki Brothers

Hodu Kkakki Brothers (호두까끼형제) is a handmade premium pie shop in Dogok-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, near Yangjae Station, that opened in 2017. For Dad's birthday, the family took out the Premium Mixed Pie (8 pieces, 34,900 won) instead of a birthday cake and shared pecan, walnut, hazelnut cacao and macadamia cheese pies. Sweetened with honey instead of refined sugar, the Hodu Kkakki Brothers pies were a gentle, well-received gift for parents.

Gangdong egg shop, NON-GMO-fed eggs and yolk needle test: Fresh Farmer

Fresh Farmer Olympic Park Foreon Direct Store is a company-run shop for organic, free-range and animal-welfare fertilized eggs on the B1 floor of Park Foreon near Dunchondong Station in Gangdong, Seoul. The writer visited on a Thursday evening, tried boiled egg samples, heard the owner explain NON-GMO feed and animal welfare certification, and bought two kinds of No. 1 (free-range) fertilized eggs, then checked their freshness at home raw, with a needle test on the yolk and as sunny-side-up eggs. Verdict: Fresh Farmer's eggs taste rich and nutty with no fishy smell.

Seocho cake shop, birthday mango cake mistaken for perfume: Chef Cho

Chef Cho Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam (쉐프조) is a fresh-fruit cake shop in Sweet Park on B1 of Shinsegae Gangnam, by Express Bus Terminal Station in Seocho, Seoul. The writer bought a Real Mango Rose No. 1 (₩56,000) as a birthday cake, and the moment the box was opened at home the mango scent spread so strongly that her husband asked if she had sprayed perfume; the generous mango rolled up like a flower, the fluffy sponge and the fresh cream that never felt greasy all won her over. For a mango lover's birthday, Chef Cho's Real Mango Rose is worth choosing again.

Hanam Italian restaurant sunset date: Basque cheesecake at Bokkeriu

Bokkeriu (보께리우) is an Italian restaurant on the Misa riverside along Misa-dong-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi. The writer drove there with her husband around sunset and enjoyed the 2-person steak set as a course, with the pasta swapped for shrimp bisque, from medium-rare Korean beef (hanwoo) sirloin to a homemade Basque cheesecake served on a chilled plate. With a roomy private parking lot and a romantic atmosphere, Bokkeriu is recommended for dates, anniversaries and taking parents out.

Bangi-dong octopus restaurant to take Mom, live samhap: Muneo Cheonha

Muneo Cheonha (문어천하) is a long-running Korean restaurant in the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul, that has served live octopus samhap for more than 10 years. After shopping in Jamsil, the writer and her mom visited Muneo Cheonha at 5pm on a weekday and ordered the live octopus samhap for 55,000 won and the flying fish roe rice ball bibimbap for 6,000 won. The complimentary sides included bean sprout kimchi soup, double-boiled steamed egg and octopus corn cheese. Muneo Cheonha is an easy, comfortable samhap spot in Bangi-dong to bring your parents.

Byeollae noodle house: octopus kalguksu and fried cuttlefish at Gojip

Gojip Tongmuneo Kalguksu Byeollae Byeolgaram Station Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in whole-octopus seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), near Exit 3 of Byeollae Byeolgaram Station in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. A couple arrived just after 6 pm on a Monday, waited behind two parties, and ordered the small whole-octopus seafood kalguksu (43,000 won) and fried cuttlefish (16,000 won). Verdict: the thick fried cuttlefish paired with the refreshing kalguksu full of abalone and clams was the most satisfying combination at Gojip Tongmuneo Kalguksu.

Pibing Paldang Branch is a dog-friendly pizza and pasta restaurant on Paldang-ro in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. Namyangju dog-friendly restaurant with pork cutlet: Gaeddae Playground

Gaeddae Playground is a dog-friendly restaurant and dog park in Jingeon-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, with an outdoor artificial turf field, a dog swimming pool and an indoor play area. Arriving late after work, the writer ate pork loin cutlet and spicy gratin tteokbokki (rice cakes in broth) at an outdoor table, then had the near-empty field to themselves for off-leash play. With no time limit on visits, Gaeddae Playground works even for a relaxed weekday evening.

Gangnam ID photo studio, 15-minute lunch-break shoot: Deokseu Gallery

Deokseu Gallery is an ID photo studio on the basement level of a building right in front of Exit 9 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a lunch break, one visit covered both a driver's license renewal photo and a passport photo, and shooting, retouching and printing at Deokseu Gallery took about 15 minutes, so there was no need to come back. Hair tools, shirts and jackets and even a steam iron are on hand, which makes this 30,000-won ID photo shoot one you can walk into with no preparation.
