Sokcho market bakery: summer gift sulppang & thawing, Sokcho Sulppang
In short
Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) is a sulppang (steamed makgeolli bread) shop at the entrance of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, selling bread steamed in large pots alongside honeycomb ice cream. The writer took away 2 Sokcho Sulppang loaves (₩5,000 each) and a honeycomb ice cream (₩6,000), carried them home in a cooler pack because it was summer, and enjoyed the chewy, soft bread torn apart by hand. Verdict: if you want sulppang as a gift from Sokcho, buy at least 2 and check the fridge and freezer storage tips first.

What is Sokcho Sulppang in Sokcho Jungang Market?
Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) is a sulppang shop in Sokcho Jungang Market, Gangwon. I'd describe it as passionately researched sulppang, fluffy and soft "Korean bread," and the gift bread you'll feel bad about not buying once you're in Sokcho.

Sulppang (steamed makgeolli bread) is the famous treat at Sokcho Jungang Market, right? There are several shops, and I'm going to tell you about the one I go to! The owner is incredibly passionate about sulppang and spent a long time perfecting it, so the taste is amazing~

Sulppang right in front of my eyes...!

The sulppang is steamed in this giant pot right here~

Sokcho Sulppang honeycomb ice cream price and promotion
Next to the sulppang, the shop also sells honeycomb ice cream (₩6,000). Buy 3 ice creams and you get 1 sulppang free, which is a sweet deal~~~ And it's perfect for eating while you wait for your sulppang~
What I bought: 2 sulppang and 1 honeycomb ice cream.

Sulppang and honeycomb ice cream, all packed up!! The honeycomb ice cream is ₩6,000.

You can't not try this honeycomb ice cream, right? It looks amazing! The deep flavor of the honeycomb and soft-serve ice cream make a honey of a combo!!! And as for this honeycomb ice cream, the owner searched beekeeping farms all over the country to find good-quality, delicious beeswax honeycomb.
How many sulppang should you buy at Sokcho Sulppang?
Sulppang is ₩5,000 each, and I bought 2.

Brought 2 sulppang home~

Once you start eating sulppang it just slides down, so 1 isn't enough hahaha. Definitely 2 or more!!!
How to store sulppang: freezer, fridge and summer heat
To keep sulppang for a long time, freeze it; if you refrigerate it, it's best to eat it within 3 days of purchase. Here's the storage advice from the shop.
- Long-term storage: freeze. When you eat it, thaw naturally, then microwave for about 2 min to 2 min 30 sec.
- Sulppang heated in the microwave is very hot, so don't eat it right away; wait until the steam has gone.
- Fridge: eat within 3 days of purchase.
- Room temperature (26℃): eat within one day.
- Hot summer: eat right after purchase.
Since it was summer, I was so worried about my precious sulppang haha, so I brought a cooler pack and kept it inside! A great tip, right?

What does Sokcho Sulppang makgeolli bread taste like?
Sokcho Sulppang is pretty hefty and heavy to hold in one hand.

There are beans and such studded all through it~ The top is sweeter and chewier, you know? hahaha

Look at this crumbly texture~ It looks dry, but no no no~ it's not dry at all, and the more you chew, the chewier and softer it gets!

It tastes best torn by hand~

I told myself I'd just have a little, kept tearing off bits, and poof, it's gone hahahahahaha. That's the charm of sulppang~
