Thai restaurant with a moody evening pub vibe in Daegu: Thai Yami
In short
Thai Yami is a Thai restaurant in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu, tucked behind the old Novotel building, with a lunch menu at midday and a separate dinner menu of à la carte dishes made for drinking. On an evening visit, the dining room turns into a dimly lit pub under pin lights, and the order was the signature pad thai and kai phrai (fried chicken) with fresh-squeezed orange juice instead of beer because of the drive home. Two dishes were more than enough to fill two people at Thai Yami.

Where is Thai Yami in Gyodong, Daegu?

Thai Yami, a Gyodong go-to spot in Daegu, sits behind the old Novotel building, near the Gyodong IBK Bank branch. The sign isn't flashy or lit up big, though, so especially after dark I'd recommend keeping an eye out as you walk over haha

What Thai Yami feels like in the evening
I visited in the evening, and the store lighting was dimmed down minimally, never overdone — the mood was really great✨ The dim, moody pin-lighting made it feel like I'd wandered into a proper local Thai pub, and the hip vibe was totally on point lol
Unlike a loud, bright restaurant, it has its own distinctly stylish atmosphere, so it's a perfect match for a drink-and-date night in the evening or a cozy catch-up with friends 👍🍻
Lunch menu and dinner menu are separate

Thai Yami runs completely separate menus for lunch and dinner. During the day it serves hearty, value-for-money meal options, and at night, in keeping with the mood pub concept, you can enjoy a variety of Thai dishes that pair well with drinks^^
The complimentary crackers and salad

Once you order your main dish, a light cracker and a refreshing salad come out as a basic side. I tried topping the crisp crackers with the crunchy salad, and the combo was really clean and well matched. It's a light way to whet your appetite while the main dish is being prepared, so even the waiting time was enjoyable haha

Fresh-squeezed orange juice instead of beer
Today's order was pad thai and kai phrai, the signature dishes at Thai Yami, a go-to Gyodong bar-restaurant. With a vibe this good and food to match, I really should've had a cold beer... but I'd driven that day, so I had to give it up with tears in my eyes ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ lol Instead, I ordered a refreshing fresh-squeezed orange juice to console myself!

The orange juice didn't taste like the store-bought, high-fructose-syrup kind at all — it genuinely tasted like real whole oranges squeezed fresh. The natural tartness and sweetness of the orange itself was so good^^
Thai Yami's pad thai: seasoning just right

The main dish, pad thai, came out in a really generous portion right from the start! They thoughtfully served the cilantro — a love-it-or-hate-it herb — on a separate plate, which made it easy to add as much or as little as I wanted. Honestly, when it first arrived, the color looked light and I thought, 'Is this going to be a bit bland?' haha But the moment I took a bite, the sweet-savory umami balance was seasoned absolutely perfectly!
Squeeze on the lemon and mix it up well with the peanut powder~~~

If you like spicy food, sprinkling on some chili flakes makes it even better! The noodles were chewy and, combined with the plump shrimp and crunchy bean sprouts, it was absolutely delicious^^
Kai phrai: are two dishes enough for two?

The kai phrai came out golden-fried and filling the plate — I couldn't help but be impressed by the generous portion lol Looking at the menu at first, I worried, 'If we just order pad thai and one kai phrai for two people, won't it be a little short?' lol But after finishing it, I nearly burst...
Squeeze the lemon over it~~~

The kai phrai looked plump and hearty even from the plating, and the first bite was surprisingly light, not greasy at all! It's already delicious on its own with that crispy-yet-juicy chicken, but pairing it with the fresh, crunchy vegetables on the side cut through any richness completely, and the combination was fantastic. Plus, the special sauce is such a perfect match with the chicken that I kept eating without stopping! Crispy, fresh, and umami — all three elements came together perfectly 😋

Look at that empty plate, scraped completely clean... Guess what I ordered? lol Clean enough that you wouldn't even need to wash it~~~
Thai Yami in Daegu: final verdict
If you're in Gyodong, Daegu looking for a great Thai restaurant or a mood pub with an amazing atmosphere, I highly recommend Thai Yami! 🇹🇭✨ It's great for a hearty meal by day and a drink under gorgeous lighting by night, making it perfect for a romantic date night or a hangout spot with friends! Definitely try the pad thai and kai phrai — the portions are generous and the flavor balance is flawless! You won't regret it^^
