Gwacheon duck BBQ with a baby: giant fried pepper & minari, Deo Chadol

Deo Chadol (더차돌) is a duck restaurant near Seonbawi Station in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, close to Seoul Grand Park and Seoul Land. After a day at Seoul Grand Park with a baby, the writer walked into Deo Chadol around 4 p.m. with no wait and ordered duck jumulleok (marinated stir-fried duck) with extra minari (Korean water parsley), a giant fried pepper and self-made fried rice. With its sweet, savory sauce and fried rice finish, Deo Chadol is a solid pick for a meal after Seoul Grand Park.

Ansan butcher's 1kg braised pork ribs, ₩15,000 family meal: Morakmorak

Morakmorak Home & Cook (모락모락홈앤쿡) is a butcher shop, meal kit and side dish store on basement level 1 of Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. The writer bought 1kg of house-marinated Korean pork jjimgalbi (braised pork ribs) at Morakmorak Home & Cook for ₩15,000, simmered it at home for a family dinner, and also looked at the hanwoo (Korean beef) galbitang meal kit, the signature yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and portioned cuts. Verdict: for anyone who wants braised ribs milder and cleaner-tasting than salty store-bought meal kits, Morakmorak Home & Cook's Korean pork jjimgalbi is great value.

Siheung bakery café for stocking up on garlic baguettes: Flowerpot

Flowerpot Cafe & Bakery (플라워팟카페&베이커리) is a three-story bakery café beside Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi, that bakes bread every day. On a repeat visit, the writer checked out the café's own parking lot, the outdoor tables on the lawn and the third-floor rooftop, then bought a pile of bread, including a garlic baguette made with Korean-grown garlic, eggs and flour. An Americano costs 5,500 won, cheap for a Mulwang Reservoir café, which makes Flowerpot Cafe & Bakery a good place to keep coming back to for a bread haul.

For sirloin shabu-shabu, kalguksu and fried rice in one good-value meal, Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu is a solid pick.
