Going empty-handed felt wrong, but a plain dessert felt a bit lacking too, so I wanted to bring something special. After some searching, I ended up at Sijeunikeu, a fruit cake spot that's become one of the go-to cafés near Centum City Station in Busan.

The store had peach, fig, and mango cakes on offer, and after some deliberation I picked the whole mango cream basque. When I opened it at my friend's place, the fresh mango on top was genuinely generous.

Big chunks of mango were piled thick on top of the cake, so every bite had that sweet, juicy fresh mango — it was gorgeous.

It wasn't an artificial sweetness but the rich, clean sweetness of the mango itself, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy. Combined with the 100% dairy fresh cream and a deep cheese flavor, the texture was uniquely soft too.

I'd seen some reviews saying the sponge layer is thin and divisive, but after trying it myself, that light texture that melts away in your mouth actually let the mango and cream flavors shine — I liked it.

My friend enjoyed it too, which made me glad I'd chosen this as the gift.

Beyond the whole mango cream basque, there were many other eye-catching signature items. The peach/mango farm 'warreo' cake (₩60,000) is Sijeunikeu's flagship signature — the name literally means fruit 'tumbling down,' and it's piled dense with fruit for a striking, showy look.

They say the mango used is only ripened for 170 hours before serving.

The mango tower cake is a luxurious cake with three whole mangoes on top, made with Thai mangoes plus domestic cream and eggs.

There was also a season-limited cake made with figs, now at their peak.

Because the lineup is curated around whatever fruit is in season, you get a new lineup every season — that's a big part of Sijeunikeu's charm.
