Haeundae hair salon: scalp scaling for Mom's red scalp, Eco Revi

Eco Revi Hair & Spa Haeundae Centum Branch is a scalp and hair repair salon on the ground floor of the Haeundae Centum Hotel, near Senteomsiti Station in Haeundae, Busan. The writer brought along Mom, whose scalp was oily and red by the end of the workday. After a consultation with a scalp diagnostic scope, Mom had the Premium All-in-One Care scaling treatment, and afterward the redness eased and her scalp felt noticeably lighter. Eco Revi Hair & Spa's private-room scalp scaling is a treatment worth giving a parent as a thank-you gift.

Nampo-dong tripe grill, a regular's first mild autumn hotpot: Bupyeong

Bupyeong Yang Gopchang (부평양곱창) is a tripe and intestine restaurant of more than 30 years near Kkangtong Market in Bupyeong-dong, Jung-gu, Busan, known as a Nampo-dong outdoor patio pub. A Busan local and regular at Bupyeong Yang Gopchang ordered the small yang-daechang jeongol (beef tripe and large intestine hotpot, 40,000 won) for the first time, then finished with udon noodles and fried rice. With a rich, non-spicy broth cooked by staff to the end and enough food for two adults, the Bupyeong Yang Gopchang hotpot was a satisfying choice.

Corn-fired hanwoo BBQ without drinks in Myeongji, Busan: Yong Hanu

Yong Hanu Myeongji Branch is a hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant on the food street of Myeongji International New City in Gangseo, Busan. The writer grilled one set (98,000 won) of 200g 1++ sirloin and 200g hanwoo galbisal (boneless rib meat) over a corn-kernel-fuelled grill. The meal came with beef seaweed soup in an earthenware pot, followed by doenjang stew and rice, enjoyed as a proper meal without alcohol. Yong Hanu Myeongji Branch serves high-quality hanwoo at good-value prices and is a family dinner spot worth revisiting.

Haeundae tonkatsu spot revisited after a year: 3 katsu at Yuyu Katsu

Yuyu Katsu Busan Haeundae Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor across from the Jwa-dong Traditional Market public parking lot in Haeundae, Busan. One year after a first visit, the writer returned at opening time and shared three katsu: Jeju black pork rosu katsu (14,900 won), 240-hour aged toku-hire katsu (14,900 won) and cheese menchi katsu (13,900 won). Yuyu Katsu tasted just as good the second time, so it remains a Busan tonkatsu restaurant worth recommending.

Jeonpo Station gukbap spot: couple tries spice level 2, Sanbandeul

Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap, Seomyeon Jeonpo Café Street Main Branch, is a budget-friendly gukbap (pork soup with rice) restaurant near Jeonpo Station in Seomyeon, Busan, that makes its gukbap with Fukuoka-style pork bone broth. The writer and her boyfriend ordered spicy pork gukbap at level 2 and level 1, plus the gukbap and fried chicken set (₩12,900). Level 2 was milder than expected, so she plans to try level 3 next time. If you want a ramen-like broth instead of standard Busan-style pork gukbap, Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap is a good fit.

Gyeongju Bomun café with a warm custard pretzel after cosmos: Yard

Yard is a large outdoor café on the main road beside Gyeongju World in the Bomun resort area of Gyeongju. The writer visited Yard on a cloudy weekday, the day after cosmos season ended, ordered a dark chocolate (6,000 won), a peach ade (6,500 won) and an oven-warmed custard pretzel (4,500 won), and enjoyed the green tree views from a 2nd-floor beanbag seat by the floor-to-ceiling windows. The flower field was gone, but the big parking lot, reasonable prices and friendly staff make Yard a Bomun café worth returning to.

Bomun, Gyeongju breakfast: yukhoe bibimbap at Hyangtaek Byeolmiwon

Hyangtaek Byeolmiwon (향택별미원) is a pet-friendly Korean rice bowl restaurant on a side street of Summeori-gil near the Bomun Tourist Complex in Gyeongju. After checking out of a pension, the writer arrived on a weekday for the 10 a.m. opening and ordered yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap) and a beef bulgogi rice bowl, 15,000 won each; both arrived in about 10 minutes, and the portions were generous. Hyangtaek Byeolmiwon is a solid pick for Gyeongju travelers who want a restaurant that opens early or are worried about parking.

Gyeongju fruit mochi shop: evening leftovers, tangerine #1, Tareudang

Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi dessert shop in an alley off Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a weekday evening the writer bought one each of the three flavors still left at Tareudang (tangerine, pineapple and kiwi) for 5,500 won apiece and ate them all that day at the guesthouse, ranking tangerine first, kiwi second and pineapple third. Thanks to the thin rice-cake skin, yogurt cream and tangy fruit juice, Tareudang's fruit mochi is worth buying again.

Seomyeon lash salon: C and JC curl mix for Mom's long lashes, Double D

Double D (더블디) is a lash, waxing and semi-permanent makeup beauty salon on Jeonpo-daero in Busanjin-gu, Busan, near Bujeon Station Exit 4. The writer brought Mom, whose past lash perms had failed several times, and after an eye-shape consultation Double D gave her a natural lash perm mixing C and JC curls, taking about 1 hour from consultation to finish. Double D matched Mom's tricky eyes with a curl that wasn't overdone, and she was happy enough to want Double D as her regular lash salon.

Marine City Italian restaurant, gnocchi and margherita: Smith's Farm

Smith's Farm (스미스씨네농장) is a farm-themed Italian restaurant near Dongbaek Station in the Marine City area of Haeundae, Busan. Two of us went for a holiday lunch and ordered the sweet pumpkin and sweet potato gnocchi and the margherita pizza (23,800 won each): the margherita came loaded with cheese, the gnocchi sat on a generous layer of pumpkin sauce, and both portions were big enough to leave us full. With its atmosphere, good food and friendly service, Smith's Farm is a Haeundae Western-style restaurant worth recommending for a date or a family meal.

With consultation and treatment taking about 1 hour in total, Ppaerapi at Esthetic Healingsu is an easy slimming treatment to fit into a busy day.

Busan hair salon bob CS perm for a mom in her 40s: Billogeu Hair

Billogeu Hair is a one-stylist, reservation-only private hair salon in Yeonji-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan, on the road up to Seongjigok Reservoir. The writer's mother, in her 40s, had her bob lightly trimmed and got a CS curl perm at Billogeu Hair, which took about 1 hour 30 minutes from consultation to neutralizing. The natural volume had people saying she looked 5 years younger, making it a very satisfying visit.
