Nowon Korean course-meal restaurant, braised short rib: Sutgarak Masil
In short
Sutgarak Bansang Masil is a hanjeongsik (Korean course meal) restaurant on Nowon-ro in Nowon-gu, Seoul, with private rooms and a large hall. Returning after a first visit with her mother, the writer came back with both her mother and older sister for the Masil course, which ran from braised beef short ribs with dried radish greens to tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and red yeast rice hot pot. The seasoning at Sutgarak Bansang Masil stayed mild enough for a mother who avoids spicy food, and free parking plus a roomy waiting area made it an easy fit for a family gathering.

There are plenty of restaurants that are good enough on a first visit, but not that many where you actually think, "I need to bring my family here next time." This place, though — I really did go back.

Last time I came with my mom and was pretty satisfied, so this time I brought my mom and my sister along too to Sutgarak Bansang Masil (숟가락반상 마실). Instead of just judging whether the food tastes good, I paid extra attention to whether it's comfortable to eat with parents and whether it's a good space for family gatherings — and it held up just as well.

Why the food brought us back to Sutgarak Bansang Masil

The biggest thing about Sutgarak Bansang Masil is that it's not the type of place that piles up one big dish — true to hanjeongsik style, you get to enjoy a variety of dishes in small portions.

When the full spread is laid out, it's pretty just from the colors alone. I remember thinking the food was beautifully plated on my first visit too, and this time each dish still felt carefully composed.

When you're eating with older family members, it also matters whether the food is too intense or too spicy — overall the seasoning here is mild and clean, so it's easy to eat with parents. My sister, who was visiting for the first time, loved it too! The fact that my mom, who usually can't handle spicy food, ate comfortably without any trouble is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to come back.
What the Masil course includes: porridge, jeon, japchae, bossam, tteokgalbi, braised short ribs
The Masil course isn't just one dish served in a big portion — it's a lineup of porridge, salad, jeon (savory pancakes), japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), bossam (boiled pork wraps), tteokgalbi, and braised short rib, all in small tastes, which is especially nice when you're dining with several people.
Personally, I love this style of eating. Rather than eating a lot of one dish, there's a fun "let's try this too, let's try that too" quality to it.

Braised beef short ribs: dried radish greens are the secret
And especially the braised short rib my mom loved last time!! The seasoning is sweet and savory but not too intense, so I kept going back for the broth. The real kick in this braised short rib is the dried radish greens (siraegi)!! Such a great combination — I'm definitely going to add siraegi next time I make braised short rib at home haha.

Tteokgalbi cooked with onions on the tabletop induction burner
The tteokgalbi also comes with a tabletop spot that works as an induction burner, so you can cook the onions and keep it warm while you eat 👍

Finishing with red yeast rice hot pot and doenjang stew
Koreans really do need rice to finish a meal! Warm hot pot rice made with red yeast rice, an assortment of namul (seasoned vegetables), and doenjang (soybean paste) stew make for a very satisfying finish 🩵 The doenjang stew keeps simmering as you eat, so it stays warm to the last spoonful. Having a range of dishes also makes it easier to satisfy different tastes when dining with parents.
Is Sutgarak Bansang Masil good for large groups?

The hall is spacious and there are separate private rooms, so it looked like a good option even if you want a quiet meal as a family. It felt like a place better suited to slightly more formal occasions — a parent's birthday or a family meal — than a casual spot for eating with friends.
In fact, the restaurant's own information notes that private rooms and reservations are available, and it's a place people visit for family outings or anniversary meals.
A popular spot for in-law meetings in Nowon
A lot of people look for a restaurant with a hall for sangyeonrye (a formal meeting between two families before marriage), and hanjeongsik restaurants in particular are a safe, universally liked choice for hosting elders. In that situation, what matters isn't just the food but also parking, rooms, atmosphere, and staff service. On that front, this place has pretty solid conditions.
- Parking available
- Reservations available
- Private rooms available
- Hanjeongsik course structure
- Menu that's easy on parents to eat
- Spacious hall
So if you're looking for a spot for a matchmaking meeting in Nowon, this one is worth putting on your shortlist. That said, for an important occasion like that, I'd recommend booking your preferred room and seats in advance rather than just walking in.
Dining with kids: baby chairs and private rooms

There are dishes kids can eat too, and baby chairs are available. Since the food isn't too intense, I think kids would enjoy it even more.
Worth a second visit: our verdict on Sutgarak Bansang Masil

My mom ate so happily last time that she said we absolutely had to come back, so we did — and my sister, who joined us this time, said she loved it too! If you're in Nowon looking for a place to eat with your parents or somewhere special for a family meal, this one is worth bookmarking.
For those like me who care not just about taste but also parking, space, and atmosphere, this is likely to be a pretty satisfying choice. Even if you show up without a reservation, there's a spacious waiting room, and you can sit down and enjoy your after-meal coffee at a relaxed pace — a place where you can really feel the thoughtfulness behind it!
