Among Korean BBQ places that grill pork, the ones that put pork neck (moksal) front and center almost always have great meat. Moksam Hwaro near Nowon Station is no exception — its moksal is nowhere near dry, and the flavor is genuinely excellent.
Moksam Hwaro pre-sears the meat first, then a staff member finishes the grilling right at your table, so you never have to worry about smelling like smoke and can just relax and eat meat someone else grilled for you. Corkage free for up to two bottles is another reason I keep coming back.

What kind of sides come with the meal?
Moksam Hwaro's side dishes turned out to be quite varied.
- Wild garlic leaves (myeong-i namul)
- Fresh wasabi, Maldon salt
- Truffle oil pollock roe, pickled chili, ssamjang (dipping paste)

- Perilla leaves
- Seasoned chives
- Pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs
The pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs were a side I'd never seen before — apparently you dip the meat in the sauce and then coat it in breadcrumbs. Such a wild idea, haha.

The signature dish: moksam hanpan
The signature dish at Moksam Hwaro near Nowon Station: moksam hanpan. It comes with two pieces of pork neck and one piece of pork belly, and the neck had just enough fat that it was never dry — genuinely delicious.

A guide on how to eat the meat

Pre-searing and the staff grilling service
While the moksam hanpan was being pre-seared, the charcoal grill was brought to the table

What to dip the pork neck in
For the first bite of grilled pork neck, the staff suggested dipping it in Maldon salt, so I did
The pork belly also came out pre-seared.
Well-cooked pork neck is set aside on a separate steel plate so it doesn't burn.
Truffle oil pollock roe

Personally, fresh wasabi with grilled pork neck was the best combination for me.

The seasoned chives were incredibly tasty too

Sweet potato soju brought in under corkage free
Good food, good drink~ The purple sweet potato soju Murasaki Sekitoba had a nice, subtle sweet potato aroma.

Pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs — a surprising combination
The pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs I saw for the first time on this visit

It's not actually pork cutlet, but dipping the meat in the sauce genuinely gives it that pork-cutlet flavor... such a surprising taste, haha

Green onion sauce goes well with the grilled pork neck too.
Pork belly, crisped up on the outside only
Just as we were finishing off the pork neck, the pork belly started

Pork belly also pairs wonderfully with fresh wasabi

Finishing up with griddle fried rice
Ordered the griddle fried rice (₩5,000)

Griddle fried rice with perfectly crisped rice grains — really delicious

Griddle fried rice that goes great as a drinking snack too. With the moksam hanpan (450g), griddle fried rice, and a bottle of sweet potato soju, we had a satisfying, full dinner~
