Pork neck grilled over charcoal at Moksam Hwaro

Among Korean BBQ places that grill pork, the ones that put pork neck (moksal) front and center almost always have great meat. Moksam Hwaro near Nowon Station is no exception — its moksal is nowhere near dry, and the flavor is genuinely excellent.

Moksam Hwaro pre-sears the meat first, then a staff member finishes the grilling right at your table, so you never have to worry about smelling like smoke and can just relax and eat meat someone else grilled for you. Corkage free for up to two bottles is another reason I keep coming back.

Side dish plate with wild garlic leaves, fresh wasabi, and Maldon salt

What kind of sides come with the meal?

Moksam Hwaro's side dishes turned out to be quite varied.

  • Wild garlic leaves (myeong-i namul)
  • Fresh wasabi, Maldon salt
  • Truffle oil pollock roe, pickled chili, ssamjang (dipping paste)
Perilla leaves, seasoned chives, and pork cutlet sauce with breadcrumbs
  • Perilla leaves
  • Seasoned chives
  • Pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs

The pork cutlet sauce and breadcrumbs were a side I'd never seen before — apparently you dip the meat in the sauce and then coat it in breadcrumbs. Such a wild idea, haha.

For the first bite of grilled pork neck, the staff suggested dipping it in Maldon salt, so I did

It's not actually pork cutlet, but dipping the meat in the sauce genuinely gives it that pork-cutlet flavor... such a surprising taste, haha
