Solo café visit near Gyeongbokgung Palace: Respire Bakery Cafe Seochon

There are days when you just want to run off on your own, you know? The weather was so nice.. I already had plans out that day so it felt like a waste to just go home right after, so I came to Seochon 🙌

Even before I got there, I'd seen the visuals of the breads on Naver Place and I was so excited already.

Respire is tucked inside an alley, which matched the relaxed feel Seochon is known for. More of a quiet-getaway spot than a bustling big cafe kind of place.

Especially on the 2nd floor, a lot of people were spending time alone, so I could settle into a seat without feeling self-conscious. When you go to a café alone you sometimes end up overly aware of everyone around you, but that day everyone was on their laptops or phones, doing their own thing, which actually made it more comfortable. I also liked that you browse and order the bread on the 1st floor, then head up to the 2nd floor to enjoy it at leisure.

What I ordered and how it tasted

What I was most curious about was the brunch menu, so I ordered a sandwich along with it, planning to have it for lunch.

The inside of the salt bread is chewy, the outside crisp. If you ate it right out of the oven it'd probably be pure bliss?!? Since it's chocolate-coated, cutting it with a knife felt a bit sticky, but the sweet-and-salty combo really hit the spot💛

Garlic shrimp sandwich

I ordered the sandwich to eat instead of lunch, and it was more filling than expected, so it worked well as a brunch item. With shrimp and egg inside it felt hearty, and the sweet chili sauce kept it from being bland, and eating it with the bread made for a pretty satisfying meal. If just coffee and bread feels a little lacking in Seochon and you want a simple meal too, this is a good menu to pick.

Salt summer latte

Ice cream, what is happening..🤩 So tasty, and the Maldon salt on top made everything harmonize perfectly. I once had an 'ice cream latte' at another café and expected a lot, but the latte flavor itself was just so-so — at Respire, total success!! I'm not great with lattes usually, but I finished the whole thing!! That's how you know it's good😆

If you're looking for a Seochon brunch or salt bread spot, Respire Bakery Cafe is worth a visit at least once. Above all, there's a wide variety of bread and a brunch menu too, so it's better than a place you'd visit just for coffee — you can have a simple meal here too. From the garlic shrimp sandwich to the chocolate salt bread and salt summer latte, everything I ordered was satisfying overall, so my menu picks were a success.

I visited alone on a weekday afternoon, and surprisingly there were a lot of other solo visitors. Especially on the 2nd floor, everyone was quietly doing their own thing, so being alone wasn't awkward at all. Rather than eating in a rush at a crowded place, it suited the kind of day I wanted — a moment to rest and enjoy some leisure.

It's also in a good spot to stop by while wandering the Seochon alleys for brunch, or combined with a trip to Gyeongbokgung Palace. The day I visited happened to be a Tuesday, when Gyeongbokgung is closed, so I unfortunately couldn't stop by there. Next time I'd like to see the palace too and try other breads at Respire — some were already sold out, so I'm curious what they taste like. Next visit, I'll go a bit earlier and pick out the bakery items I missed this time.

I'd recommend this place to anyone in Seochon looking for a nice-vibe bakery café, or a café that's comfortable to visit alone.
