Seoul Korean BBQ after work in Euljiro: Daegu makchang at Baegyeom

In short

Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch is a Daegu-style makchang (grilled pork intestine) restaurant a 1-minute walk from Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. After work, the writer ordered 200g of Daegu makchang (17,000 won) and baegyeom doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew, 9,000 won), eating the pre-grilled, quick-cooking makchang with salt, scallion kimchi, makjang dipping sauce and perilla leaf wraps. With makchang that has no gamey smell and an old-school atmosphere, Baegyeom Makchang is a solid pick for after-work drinks or a team dinner in Euljiro.

I visited Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch (백염막창 을지로본점), a makchang (grilled pork intestine) spot in Euljiro 3-ga, Seoul. You can enjoy Daegu-style makchang in Hipjiro, one of Seoul's hottest neighborhoods, and I was impressed that the makchang is 100% Korean-sourced. I think it's also a great place for a drink after work, so let's get into my honest review.

What's the atmosphere at Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch?

The exterior already gives off a strong old-school vibe. It blends in nicely with the Euljiro alleys and got me excited.

The place was full of customers, so I only photographed part of the interior. Overall it felt like a warm, old-fashioned joint, and the bustling crowd made it even livelier. It's a good spot for a drink after work or a meetup with friends.

Basic table setting and makjang

Once you sit down, they set the table with the basics, and since this is a Daegu-style makchang restaurant, I liked that makjang (a thick, savory dipping sauce) was ready too. You can add chopped scallions and cheongyang chili peppers to the makjang to suit your taste.

What does the Daegu makchang 200g (₩17,000) taste like?

The Daegu makchang 200g is ₩17,000, and it comes pre-grilled, so there was no long wait. The scallions and enoki mushrooms served alongside looked delicious too.

The Daegu makchang was turning a lovely golden brown. Since it arrives pre-grilled, it's ready to eat in no time, so you don't have to wait long, which I liked. The crispy outside and chewy inside were the best.

Doesn't it look delicious even just in the photo? 🥹

Daegu makchang with salt and scallion kimchi

The Daegu makchang here went well both dipped in salt and eaten with pa-kimchi (scallion kimchi). The makchang itself was so fresh that there was no gamey smell at all, and the nutty flavor and chewy texture really came through. You can tell the quality of the raw meat from the first bite.

I also dunked the makchang deep into the makjang, and it was savory with a rich umami that lifted the flavor even more. Daegu-style makchang really is best dipped in makjang.

I also put the makchang on a perilla leaf (kkaennip) and ate it as a wrap. The fragrant leaf brought out the nuttiness even more. It wasn't greasy at all, and I enjoyed it to the very end.

Does baegyeom doenjang jjigae (₩9,000) go well with makchang?

The baegyeom doenjang jjigae is ₩9,000, with a spicy, rich soybean paste flavor that was excellent. It was generously packed with tofu and vegetables, which I was happy about.

Thanks to the spicy broth, it paired really well with the makchang. It cleansed my palate, so I could enjoy everything to the end.

Verdict: makchang and drinks after work in Euljiro

Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch was a satisfying place to really enjoy makchang. The fresh, odor-free makchang, the savory makjang and the spicy doenjang jjigae were all good, and the old-school charm combined with the hip Euljiro vibe made it even more appealing.

If you're looking for an Euljiro bar where you can have makchang with a drink, or a place for an after-work company dinner or gathering, I highly recommend it!
