Why Galchi Hanpan in Sangmu, Gwangju, for a father's birthday dinner?

Galchi Hanpan is a Korean restaurant specializing in braised hairtail (galchi jorim) and grilled hairtail (galchi gui) on the main road of Sangmu district in Gwangju. Today was my dad's birthday, so my family wanted a hearty meal together, and we headed to this Sangmu district favorite, Galchi Hanpan~!

At Galchi Hanpan you can enjoy braised and grilled hairtail together, along with a generous spread of Korean-style banchan (side dishes) filling the whole table!!!

Where is Galchi Hanpan and where do you park?

Galchi Hanpan sits right on the main road of Sangmu district so it's easy to spot, with a menu sign and standing menu board right at the entrance that catch your eye immediately. The menu is shown with photos so you can check the offerings before going in haha. Just a heads up, there's nowhere to park so we parked in the alley ㅜㅜ.

Inside Galchi Hanpan: round tables built for group dinners

The inside of Galchi Hanpan is spacious, with round tables for four or more people spaced well apart, making it good for chatting and also a great pick for after-work gatherings or drinks. Perfect for a casual drink on a nice day!!!!

What we ordered: Galchi Hanpan (medium), Mokpo hairtail braised and grilled

We ordered the Galchi Hanpan (medium), split 7 to 3. Galchi Hanpan uses Mokpo meokgalchi (prized Mokpo hairtail) for a set that combines braised and grilled hairtail, which is great to order when visiting with several people!!!

The interior is clean, and from the big sign on the wall the signature dishes are laid out clearly at a glance. From grilled and braised hairtail to jeon (savory pancakes), stir-fried pork, and whole whelk soup, it's a total drinking-food lineup!

What banchan comes with it? A full Jeolla-style side dish spread

The basic banchan at Galchi Hanpan came out together, arranged neatly and colorfully across the whole table ♥ Seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned seaweed, sautéed zucchini, stir-fried anchovies, chives, various seasoned vegetables — overall not too strong-flavored, clean, and total Jeolla-do banchan class~~~~~

These were total rice thieves, so I polished off a bowl of rice even before the braised hairtail arrived!! All the banchan were fresh and full of homemade flavor!

How does the grilled hairtail taste? Light, nutty and lightly salted

I'm a grilled-hairtail person, and picking apart the nicely browned fish, it was totally clean, savory, and salty. Went great with rice and paired beautifully with the banchan too, so alternating between them, I never got tired of it and kept eating.

Braised hairtail simmered on the table burner, sauce soaking into the flesh

Galchi Hanpan sets up a burner at the center of the table so you can simmer the braised hairtail as you eat, keeping it warm throughout the meal. Alternating between the spicy braised sauce and the grilled hairtail alongside the banchan, I was completely satisfied overall hahaha.

Braised hairtail can sometimes taste like it's all sauce and nothing else, right? Here the sauce soaked all the way into the flesh, so you could put a bit of sauce over rice and mix it, or pick the meat apart and dip it deep into the sauce — both delicious hahahaha.

Who is Galchi Hanpan best for? Family meals and drinks with friends

Great for a family dinner in Sangmu or drinks with friends, and Galchi Hanpan is a total recommendation for tasting braised and grilled hairtail in one sitting. A well-rounded, filling meal — it's summer and I'd been low on energy and appetite, but it's been a while since I felt this satisfied, and I'm so happy about it~~~ 100% would come back haha.

After trying the 3-person portion at Galchi Hanpan, I think it suits both people who love spicy braised hairtail and Korean food lovers who want the clean grilled version too. If you feel like one dish alone isn't enough, or want a healthy meal together with everyone, strongly recommended hahahaha.

Just a note, they have Wi-Fi. And apparently there's a lunch special too. Good for office workers looking for a lunch spot!!!!!!!
