My friend and I visited Sokcho on a trip together! We'd already had a simple bowl of buckwheat makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) for lunch, so for dinner we figured we'd go for seafood — and settled on a snow crab and sashimi set that's been popular lately!
Sokcho has so many places to eat sashimi, from Dongmyeong Harbor to Cheongcho Beach and Cheongcho Lake, but we went with Daepo Harbor for the great value. Let me tell you all about Hanggu Hwareo, where we had a great meal in Sokcho!

Hanggu Hwareo hours, parking and seating
Hanggu Hwareo is located at Unit S-9 of Daepohang Fish Market in Sokcho, and it's open daily from 11:30 to 4:00 the next morning. Parking is 1 hour free at the Daepo Harbor public parking lot.

Every seat at Hanggu Hwareo has an ocean view, and tables can be pushed together, so it's great for group gatherings too! There were three of us and it was totally comfortable — I noticed a lot of families dining there too!
What does the Hanggu Hwareo menu cost? Course prices

They sell all kinds of seafood, from king crab, bakdal snow crab, snow crab, and red crab courses down to individual dishes!
- King crab C course [2 people] ₩300,000
- Bakdal snow crab B course [2 people] ₩250,000
- Snow crab D course [2 people] ₩200,000
- Red crab B course ₩150,000
Having set courses made it easy to order — you just pick based on your party size and you get to enjoy a variety of seafood plus stew together! You have to choose a course sized to the number of adults visiting, so we went with the snow crab C course [for 3], ₩250,000!

After ordering, we went to check out the crabs at the tank in the back, and it was genuinely spotless — made us trust the food even more!

They pulled out one snow crab and one red crab to show us directly, then steamed them quickly — the meat yield looked amazing!
Snow crab C course for 3 (250,000 won): banchan to stew
The snow crab C course for 3 at Hanggu Hwareo comes with a full spread of banchan (side dishes), three kinds of sashimi, snow crab and red crab, and finishes with spicy stew. The banchan alone was enough to work as an appetizer.

Look how generous the banchan spread was as soon as it was set down?! Kimchi pancake, corn kernels, acorn jelly, seaweed, sushi, and flounder salad — perfect as appetizers, and since everything was set out fresh right there, it all tasted really fresh!

Sea squirt, which gets fishy and inedible if it's not fresh, plus chewy abalone sashimi, and Sokcho's signature squid sashimi! All served as basic side dishes — perfect with a drink!

What sashimi comes in the 3-person set? Amberjack, rockfish, flounder
The sashimi in the 3-person set comes in three kinds — the reddish fish is amberjack, the one with black skin is rockfish, and the one with the fin standing up is flounder!

The sashimi was sliced to just the right thickness, and since it had been aged once, it had a softer bite rather than a super chewy texture — I thought kids could easily eat it too, which was nice! A lot of families visit here, so it seems like a good place for kids to eat too!

Wrapping it in lettuce with the special ssamjang (dipping sauce) and garlic and eating it in one bite is genuinely delicious! It's a richer flavor than regular ssamjang, so it pairs really well with the sashimi!

Snow crab and red crab, served already cleaned
The snow crab and red crab both came fully cleaned! The meat yield was genuinely 100%, so there was tons to eat from the body all the way through the legs, and even with three of us eating, it felt like quite a lot of food!

They even cut the tender body meat in half for us, so it was easy to scoop out, and the leg meat slid right out in one piece too! For people who don't usually eat crab because it's such a hassle, this kind of prep makes it so easy — we ate every bit with no waste!

The snow crab definitely had a great meat yield and was so sweet — I kept going "wow, this is seriously delicious and sweet" the whole time we ate!

Crab innard fried rice (2,000 won) and spicy stew to finish
You can't skip the crab innard fried rice when you're eating snow crab! It's only ₩2,000 and worth every won — savory and so delicious!

We finished it off by boiling up the spicy stew — it was so tasty and made for a hearty, satisfying end to the meal!
My friends and I had a really delicious meal! After eating there myself, I get why Hanggu Hwareo is famous at Daepo Harbor. If you're looking for a great spot to enjoy sweet snow crab and sashimi together, I recommend Hanggu Hwareo at Daepo Harbor!
