Suwon gyudon restaurant, spicy orange sauce set: Gyudongjip Ajou

Today I went to Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch, a great spot for lunch near Ajou University. I usually love gyudon (beef rice bowl), so I stopped by, and I was really satisfied — the portions were generous and the meat was piled on thick. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a lunch spot near Ajou University!

Where is Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch, and is there a wait?

Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch sits right near the Ajou University intersection, making it perfect for a meal near the school or the hospital. At lunchtime it was packed with both students and office workers. Seeing a dedicated waiting list already set up made it clear this place is already known as a go-to lunch spot near Ajou University.

A good restaurant is one people find and flock to on their own, I guess.

What does the inside of Gyudongjip feel like?

The interior of Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch had a clean Japanese home-style feel, and the tables were spaced comfortably for eating. Notes left by customers were stuck on the wall, which gave the place a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Gyudongjip menu: gyudon, char siu don, yukhoe don and curry

Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch has a wide range beyond its signature gyudon — char siu don, yukhoe don (raw beef rice bowl), and curry — so there was plenty to choose from depending on my mood. There were lots of side dishes too, good for ordering alongside a main. I wanted to try the curry next time.

Side dishes: self-serve kimchi and pickled radish

Kimchi and pickled radish were set out on the table, and I liked that you could help yourself to as much as you wanted. The little decorative pieces around the restaurant were cute too, fun to look at while waiting.

What we ordered: the gyudon set

I ordered the gyudon set piled high with thick cuts of meat. It came with mini soba noodles and karaage too, making it a really hearty meal. It looked so good my mouth was watering just from the visuals. 🤤

What I liked most was the amount of meat. It had a subtle charred, smoky flavor and was piled on generously, seasoned just right to eat with rice bite after bite. I also tried it with the orange sauce that came alongside, and the slight spiciness cut through the richness and brought out even more flavor. Personally, I'd really recommend eating it with this sauce. 🌶️

Thanks to the spicy sauce, I never got tired of it, all the way to the last bite.

Are the mini soba and karaage any good?

The soba noodles that came with it were light and clean, pairing well with the gyudon, and the karaage was crispy outside and juicy inside — a side dish, but a high-satisfaction one. The combination of main and sides left nothing lacking for a full meal. Being way too full was a sign of just how satisfied I was.
