Three-flavor octopus skewers in Jeonju Hanok Village: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is a fire-grilled octopus skewer and octopus gangjeong (fried octopus) shop on Eunhaeng-ro in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. On a weekday afternoon, one cheese, one katsuo and one mala octopus skewer were ordered, each grilled over an open flame to order and finished with a blowtorch. The three flavors taste completely different, so Munkkocchi is a good Jeonju Hanok Village street-food stop for trying one of each.

Jeonju Hanok Village food / a Jeonju Hanok Village street food favorite — a review of Munkkocchi Mungangjeong.

Octopus skewers at Munkkocchi Mungangjeong in Jeonju Hanok Village

Back in Jeonju Hanok Village after years, heading for Munkkocchi

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong, on Eunhaeng-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village, sells octopus skewers (munkkocchi) and octopus fritters (mungangjeong). I was in Jeonju anyway and dropped by the Hanok Village for the first time in ages — it's packed with amazing food, so any trip to Jeonju basically has to include a Hanok Village stop.

My family home is actually in Jeonju haha, but locals barely ever go to the Hanok Village themselves... Anyway, it had genuinely been years since I'd wandered around enjoying the food there. I went to buy dakgangjeong (fried chicken bites), and while I was at it, stopped by this Jeonju Hanok Village favorite, Munkkocchi Mungangjeong!

There are already some famous things in the Hanok Village, and octopus skewers are definitely one of them! I remember a coworker mentioning she was going to Jeonju Hanok Village just to eat octopus skewers... so I guess they really are that good.

Parking at Jeonju Hanok Village: weekdays vs weekends

Cars can drive into Jeonju Hanok Village on weekdays, and luckily I went on a weekday, so I was able to stop briefly in front of the shop. Weekdays really are the best... On weekends, cars can't enter the Hanok Village, so please use the Hanok Village public parking lot instead.

The Munkkocchi menu: cold drinks and ice cream beyond the skewers

Besides munkkocchi and mungangjeong, this Jeonju Hanok Village favorite also sells slushy beer, house-made sikhye (sweet rice drink), fruit slushies, and Sanghamokjang ice cream. It was so hot that I really wanted a cold side, but the catch is I'd just had lunch and was too full to eat dessert on top of it... ha.

With such a wide menu on display, it seems like a great idea to pair a drink with your munkkocchi or mungangjeong.

Honestly I came for the octopus skewers, but seeing the fritters made me waver a little haha ^^^ The mungangjeong looked so good... but I stuck to the plan and ordered the skewers.

Interior view while waiting for the order after ordering

While waiting for my order, an octopus plush toy caught my eye. Just a cute plush toy, octopus are cute. Sorry to the actual octopus getting chopped up on the skewers, but I sweated it out taking pictures of this cute thing anyway.

Since everything is made right after you order, I looked up and snapped a photo of the sky while waiting haha. Locals rarely come to the Hanok Village on a weekday afternoon, so I felt a bit like an oddity being there myself haha.

Kiosk ordering at Munkkocchi, and free sikhye for a receipt review

Ordering at this Jeonju favorite is done through a kiosk, but if that's tricky, just press the bell and the friendly owner will help you through it... (honestly I fumbled through it myself too, getting old haha). While you wait for your order, be sure to leave a Naver receipt review — they'll give you sikhye for it!

How the octopus skewers are grilled over flame and torched

Finally, the munkkocchi arrived. Chewy octopus grilled to a nice golden brown, but the inside was still so tender. Even in the heat, they grilled the octopus directly on the grill plate and finished it with a torch right there — which somehow made it feel even more special... the weather was really something.

The munkkocchi is grilled directly over open flame, then topped with bonito flakes (katsuobushi) and finished with various sauces for flavor. Apparently they use food-certified 'gamuneo' octopus skewers!

Cheese, katsuo and mala octopus skewers compared side by side

I ordered cheese munkkocchi, katsuo munkkocchi, and mala munkkocchi. I only remembered trying the katsuo one before, and was about to order three of the same, but since there were so many flavors, I got one of each! Having such a variety was such a nice way to go.

Three types of munkkocchi: cheese, katsuo, and mala

Cheese octopus skewer

For the cheese munkkocchi especially, they melt the cheese with a torch right there, so I nearly ate it the second I got it haha. The cheese munkkocchi's visuals are just insane. It uses natural cheese that's over 99% mozzarella rather than frozen cheese, so it was so rich and savory. As a cheese lover, I enjoyed it even more.

Katsuo octopus skewer

Next, the katsuo munkkocchi! They piled on so much bonito flakes that it nearly blew away in the wind when I received it, so I cradled it against my chest getting into the car haha. Don't waste my precious bonito flakes.

Mala octopus skewer

The katsuo munkkocchi is the ultimate combo of savory, sweet, and salty! And the mala munkkocchi had just the right amount of spice, super clean-tasting. If you like mala flavors, you'll really enjoy this one.

Every single item was delicious, so I left satisfied! Now I get why people say they go to Jeonju Hanok Village just for octopus skewers... If you're visiting Jeonju Hanok Village, take a light stroll and try Munkkocchi Mungangjeong's varied menu — it's really worth it! Highly recommend this Jeonju Hanok Village food favorite, Munkkocchi Mungangjeong.
