When you are arranging a meal with your parents or extended family, there are so many things to consider, right? With a larger group, you want a menu that everyone can enjoy regardless of their preferences, and a place where the table arrives looking properly generous rather than sparse.

I had a meal to plan around Mapo this time, and while looking around, I visited a seafood restaurant with a flawless spread, from the visual presentation to the selection. It is a Mapo sashimi restaurant I really want to recommend for family gatherings because people of every age can enjoy it together. Here is my visit to Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada (제철담은 마포바다).

A clean, comfortable atmosphere near Daehung Station

It is near Daehung Station, so it is easy to reach by public transport and very accessible.

As soon as I stepped inside, the clean, neat interior caught my eye. The overall atmosphere was calm and comfortable for a group meal. The tables were nicely spaced and the seating was arranged comfortably, so it seemed just as suitable for bringing older family members as for a small party.

The staff welcomed us kindly while explaining the table setting, so I could simply relax and focus on the meal throughout the visit.

A Signature Set that fills the table to the brim

The Mapo Bada Signature Set table spread

The signature menu, the “Mapo Bada Signature Set” (₩151,000), arrived, and I could not help but marvel at the enormous selection—it filled the wide table without a gap.

The Signature Set filling a wide table

At the center was a large platter of neatly sliced assorted sashimi, surrounded by salt-grilled shrimp, boiled pork bossam (sliced boiled pork wraps), grilled gizzard shad, assorted seafood, tofu kimchi, steamed egg, live octopus, and more. At a typical sashimi restaurant, choosing a menu can feel awkward when young children or some family members do not eat raw fish, you know?

But the Mapo Bada Signature Set offered more than fresh sashimi: mild boiled pork bossam, assorted fried items that were crisp outside and tender inside, savory tofu kimchi, and soft steamed egg all came together. It was a varied menu that everyone could enjoy, making it ideal for a family gathering at a Mapo sashimi restaurant.

Seaweed soup made richer by customer feedback

The soup that originally came with the set was kimchi stew, but I heard it was recently changed to seaweed soup in response to customer feedback. I took a generous spoonful of the seaweed soup, bubbling away in a large bowl. The broth was deeply flavorful and refreshing, yet not overpowering, and it gently coated the palate. Compared with spicy kimchi stew, the clean, mild seaweed soup really brought out the flavor of the fresh assorted sashimi and boiled pork. It was also a much neater, more perfect pairing for parents or children.

Seasonal gizzard shad, assorted seafood, and grilled shrimp in harmony

Four kinds of assorted sashimi including seasonal gizzard shad

The main course featured four kinds of assorted sashimi, including seasonal gizzard shad, with firm, plump flesh, along with sweet raw shrimp. It felt wonderfully fresh, as though it had been prepared straight from the tank.

Assorted seafood with scallops, abalone, and sea squirts

The assorted seafood, generously filled with scallops, abalone, sea squirts, and more, was full of ocean aroma. There was no fishiness at all, and the crisp, pleasantly chewy texture was excellent.

Golden grilled seasonal gizzard shad
Red salt-grilled shrimp

The golden seasonal grilled gizzard shad released more nutty flavor with every bite, bones and all, while the red salt-grilled shrimp were so plump that the shells peeled easily and I kept reaching for more. Add the combination of tender boiled pork bossam topped with fragrant seasoned vegetables, and it was a generous meal that never became tiresome right through to the end.

A table set with both seafood and meat

From fresh seasonal seafood and meat to neat basic side dishes and fried items, everything came together on one table for a hearty, feel-good meal. If you are looking for a place in Mapo to take your parents or considering a fail-safe venue for a Mapo sashimi restaurant family gathering, I wholeheartedly recommend enjoying a special, generous time with the Signature Set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada!
