Sometimes I get a sudden craving for crispy-yet-moist Japanese-style katsu. The joy of biting into a thick, juicy cutlet hidden under perfectly fried breading is one of those small everyday pleasures. Recently I visited a Japanese katsu restaurant that's been getting a lot of word-of-mouth buzz among locals and office workers for nailing the taste, the sides, and the atmosphere all at once. It really was a textbook example of crispy outside, moist inside, and it exceeded my expectations.

Parking and first impressions
Parking is always one of my biggest concerns when visiting somewhere new, but this place had that covered — even on my first visit, I could park without any stress and walk straight in. Having the parking situation sorted out before the meal even started put me in a relaxed mood to enjoy the food.

The atmosphere and seating
The interior was clean, cozy, and carried that distinctly tidy Japanese-restaurant feel. Hygiene management was clearly a priority, and the tables were spaced generously enough for comfortable conversation and dining. It felt just as suited to a date as it did to a family visit or a solo meal.

Hire katsu: crispy outside, moist inside, done right
The main dish I ordered that day was hire katsu (tenderloin cutlet), one of Jeongseong Katsu's most popular menu items. The moment it landed on the table, its clean, appetizing look caught my eye — golden-brown breading against a thick cut of tenderloin with a faint pink blush. The first bite delivered a crisp crunch followed by a rush of juices, which was genuinely impressive. The outside was crackly-crisp while the inside was so tender it practically melted, and I couldn't help but say out loud how good it was. There was zero gamey smell, just a savory, clean flavor filling my mouth — it really showed what premium tonkatsu can be. Quality that lived up to its reputation as a top spot in Cheomdan, Gwangju.

Crunchy cabbage and the side dishes
Every side that came with the katsu showed real care. The cabbage in particular was excellent — wonderfully crunchy and perfect for cutting through the richness of the fried cutlet. The thinly shredded cabbage paired beautifully with a savory, tangy dressing, and I kept reaching for my chopsticks between bites of katsu. It played the supporting role of palate refresher perfectly. Seeing this level of attention to detail made it clear why this place has earned its reputation as a top spot in Cheomdan.

The curry that comes standard is a hidden gem
The curry, one of the standard sides that comes with the meal, was also more of a treat than I expected. Deep and rich in flavor, it went beyond being a mere side dish and tasted like a full dish in its own right. It was so good that I naturally found myself mixing it into my rice.

The smooth, rich curry aroma blended perfectly with the rice, filling me up nicely alongside the katsu. Dipping the crispy katsu straight into the curry gave it a whole different kind of appeal. Between the tidy presentation and the deep flavors, my whole meal at this top Cheomdan tonkatsu spot was a pleasure from start to finish.

Why I want to go back
This was a place where great food, convenient parking, a clean interior, and friendly staff all came together in balance. If you're after the textbook crispy-outside, moist-inside katsu or a clean, reliable Japanese meal, I'd recommend it without hesitation. With top-quality meat, rich curry, and crunchy cabbage all working together, this Japanese tonkatsu specialist in Cheomdan is worth a visit for a satisfying, happy meal. I'm already planning to go back soon to try other menu items.
