Family dinner with extra pork neck at Daraewon Makchang, Daegu

In short

Daraewon Makchang Daegu Main Branch is a 1978 makchang (grilled beef intestines) restaurant on Pyeongni-ro in Seo-gu, Daegu. The writer ate two servings of pre-grilled makchang and two servings of pork neck with her parents, then ordered two more servings of pork neck because it was so good, and got a complimentary steamed egg from a review event. The makchang was chewy with no gamey smell and the pork neck was thick and juicy, making it a spot worth returning to for a family meal.

This is 'Daraewon Makchang,' a restaurant recommended by Daegu locals. It's already famous among Daegu people! I'm a neighborhood resident, so I come here often haha

An old-school interior that also works for group gatherings

The inside has that old-school restaurant feel overall! And there's a separated section — there's also a brighter space like the one you see in the second photo! People seemed to be having group dinners there, so this Seo-gu, Daegu spot is also great for group makchang gatherings in Daegu!

The basic side dishes get laid out like this. The friendly staff serve everything quickly. It was a weekday so it wasn't too crazy, but this place gets super busy on weekends,,! If you come to this old-school Daegu restaurant on a Friday it's totally packed. A real local-recommended spot.

Table setting with two servings of ordered pork neck

Pork neck for two, first with my parents

Ta-da! Today I went with my mom and dad, and since I wanted meat too I also ordered two servings of pork neck! Thick, delicious-looking pork neck came out and my parents and I grilled it while practically drooling ㅠㅠㅠ...lol

How could a menu like this not need a drink~~

Drinks paired with the meat

Pre-grilled makchang for two, chewy with no gamey smell

As we were eating, the pre-grilled makchang for two arrived! Since it comes pre-grilled it came out later than the pork neck as the main event🤤 I came here once before with a friend and we just ate a ton of makchang.. It's genuinely delicious. There's a reason Daraewon Makchang is the name that comes up for Daegu makchang.

When they grill it golden brown alongside everything else, how could you not want to eat it~

Pre-grilled makchang and pork neck on the grill

The thick pork neck got cut once it was cooked enough, and since it's so thick, even cut small it looks thick and incredibly delicious..

They grilled garlic on top too~ the pre-grilled makchang was already lightly cooked so we cooked it a bit more and ate it quickly.. It had been a while since I'd had makchang but it was really delicious,,,👍🏻💛

Makchang dipped in makjang sauce

Dip the makchang generously in the makjang (dipping sauce) with chili and scallion added, and it's seriously.. chewy but also tender with no gamey smell, so incredibly delicious...✨ Fact: a good Daegu makchang restaurant is decided by its makjang sauce.😎

The pork neck is also a hit — we ended up ordering two more

And honestly...my family comes here a lot, so this time we focused on the pork neck, and this Daegu makchang restaurant's pork neck is genuinely, incredibly delicious too. It's good with just sesame oil and salt. It's full of juice, crispy outside and tender inside.. and doesn't have the dryness pork neck can sometimes have..

Kimchi and garlic grilling together on the pan

The kimchi was delicious too so we grilled it alongside — a truly perfect combination🤩 The pork neck is so thick that the texture is great and juicy, super delicious. Grilling garlic golden brown and eating it together made everything go down so smoothly... the meat just melts away in your mouth~ My parents also said it was so delicious and ate happily, so

we ordered two more servings of pork neck....haha.. Honestly the makchang portion is huge too so we were already pretty full by then..!!haha The pork neck quality looked amazing and it was so thick — doesn't it look incredibly delicious just from the visual? Not just makchang, the pork neck is also excellent here, so definitely try it;;; (next time I'll try the beef short rib meat and chicken feet too;)

Finishing with doenjang stew and a review-event steamed egg

Watching Koreans who just got off work eating makchang and meat, how can you resist the Korean dessert of doenjang (soybean paste stew) and rice~? This old-school Daegu restaurant, Daraewon Makchang, makes a great doenjang stew too.

The steamed egg I got from participating in the review event at this locally-recommended Daegu restaurant, Daraewon Makchang! Even though it's a free steamed egg for joining the review event, it's this generous~~ My parents said it was soft and ate it up happily haha

Steamed egg received from the review event

I came back from this old-school Daegu restaurant, Daraewon Makchang, so satisfied and stuffed! It's truly a genuine local-recommended spot, so if you're looking for Daegu makchang and planning to stop by Seo-gu, definitely give it a try! The makchang is tender but still chewy just right, with no gamey smell — so delicious! The old-school atmosphere also makes the drinks go down way too easily, be warned😂
