Even the individually wrapped chopsticks and spoons felt hygienic and clean, which I appreciated.

At the self-serve bar of Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch, you can help yourself to unlimited basic banchan (side dishes). We got six basic banchan, plus two extra ones — seasoned grilled flounder and shredded chicken breast salad — since we ordered for two.

The spicy scallop salad in particular was so good I kept going back for more, and the bracken fern salad, bellflower root salad, and tangpyeongchae (mung bean jelly salad) were all mildly seasoned, not overpowering, which I liked. The crispy fried eggplant with soy dipping sauce could easily double as a drinking snack, and the japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) was great too!!

Rich beef seaweed soup with tot (seaweed) rice

The main dish, seaweed soup, comes in an individual stone pot cooked over an open flame, so there may be some light char on the outside — best not to touch the pot itself. The broth was truly rich and deep; one spoonful was enough to understand why this is called a tonic food.

The rice comes as tot bap (rice mixed with hijiki seaweed), which felt a lot healthier than plain white rice, and it's unlimited refill too, so it was great value. There was plenty of meat, and the portion of seaweed soup was so generous that we ended up paying ₩1,000 to pack the leftover broth to take home.
