Changwon Station eel restaurant: first Jinju-style eel, Daedo Jangeo

In short

Daedo Jangeo is a Jinju-style grilled eel restaurant right in front of Changwon Station in Changwon, Gyeongnam, which reportedly moved to Changwon after 30 years on the eel street in front of Jinju Fortress. The writer and his wife tried Jinju-style grilled eel for the first time, dipping the large salt-grilled sea eel in sesame oil sauce and finishing with eel soup sprinkled with jepi (Korean prickly ash) powder. Thanks to tender eel with no fishy smell and eel that comes fully grilled from the kitchen, Daedo Jangeo is an easy recommendation even for eel beginners.

My wife and I often head to Changwon for day trips. This time we visited Daedo Jangeo (대도장어), a well-known grilled eel restaurant right in front of Changwon Station that has also been officially selected as a Changwon city recommended restaurant. It serves a very special Jinju-style grilled eel, unlike ordinary eel places, so I had high expectations before even going. The food and service were both great, and I was so satisfied that I want to come back with my parents and family.

A notice on the wall states that both the sea eel and freshwater eel are carefully selected domestic products only, which made me trust and enjoy the food even more.

What side dishes come with eel at Daedo Jangeo?

The table at Daedo Jangeo is neatly laid with salad, stir-fried anchovies, shredded ginger, seasoned vegetables, pickled onions, buchu-jeon (chive pancake), young radish kimchi, broccoli salad, water kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi and wrap vegetables. Finally, lush green wrap vegetables take over the table! None of the sides are overly strong and they are all so tidy that I could finish a bowl of rice with these alone. The wrap lettuce especially was not tough at all, super soft and delicious, and I was amazed. It turns out the owner grows and harvests it himself in his own field, which made total sense.

During the meal you can easily grab more side dishes from the self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant, and for a few items not on the bar, the staff kindly brought them right away when I asked.

Jinju-style salt-grilled sea eel: what was my first taste like?

The large salt-grilled sea eel at Daedo Jangeo comes out pre-grilled over briquettes in the kitchen, with a smoky aroma and no fishy or gamey smell. With a garlic-based seasoning, the eel was springy yet tender, completely different from the grilled eel I usually eat.

The salt-grilled sea eel (large) arrived looking majestic!

Honestly, this was my very first time trying Jinju-style grilled eel, so my expectations were high. The moment I took a bite, the taste was better than expected, and my wife and I looked at each other in surprise. There was no fishy or gamey taste at all. It felt like grilling it first over briquettes in the kitchen gave it a full smoky flavor and completely removed any off smell.

It was my first time trying grilled eel with a garlic-based seasoning, and the flesh was incredibly springy yet tender, melting away as soon as it went into my mouth. It was completely different from the usual grilled eel I have had at other places. With this much clean, soft flavor, I thought even beginners or women who normally avoid eel because of its smell could enjoy it without hesitation.

Why does grilled eel come with a sesame oil dip?

Looking at the table, I wondered at first, "Why is sesame oil sauce the default sauce for grilled eel?" But once I dipped a piece, the nuttiness of the sesame oil wrapped around the sharp, slightly bitter bite of the garlic and balanced it brilliantly. The more I ate, the more addictive this great combo became.

Fully grilled in the kitchen, kept warm with a solid-fuel burner

One of the best things about Daedo Jangeo is that the eel is fully grilled in the kitchen before serving. There is no need to grill it at the table in a cloud of smoke, so you do not have to worry about smelling like smoke, and since they light solid fuel under the plate, the eel stays fully warm until the end of the meal.

There are onions laid at the very bottom of the grilled eel. As they cook in the gentle heat, their natural sweetness blends with the savory tender eel on the plate, adding even deeper flavor.

Daedo Jangeo eel soup, finished with jepi powder

The eel soup (jangeo-guk) at Daedo Jangeo is a meal menu only available to customers who had the grilled eel, and the writer ordered it as an extra after the grill. It starts out mild, and sprinkling the jepi powder on every table brings out a spicy kick.

After polishing off the grilled eel, I added this eel soup (jangeo-guk), a meal menu only for grilled-eel customers, to finish. With the first sip of broth, a deep, rich, nutty flavor rushed in, and I felt a pleasant energy fill my whole body, like a natural recovery boost.

When first served, the broth is mild and neat, not standing out. Every table has jepi powder (Korean pepper powder, also called chopi) ready to add to taste. I sprinkled a moderate amount and the spicy savory flavor came alive, and I put a bowl of rice in and cleaned out every last drop of broth.

On the way out, there is also a dessert coffee vending machine, so I left feeling neat and satisfied! From the owner's deep cooking skill to the customer-minded facilities, this Changwon grilled eel visit to Daedo Jangeo was flawlessly generous. If you want a stamina-boosting meal or a tidy room restaurant, definitely stop by!
