Wood-gallery interior Korean set meal in Daegu: Cafe Dongi Daemyeong
In short
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a single-serving Korean set meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant on Daemyeongbokgae-ro 4-gil in Nam-gu, Daegu. The restaurant began as a handmade wood furniture shop, so the interior feels like an art gallery, and the meal here was the grandmother's stir-fried jjukkumi (baby octopus) set, the flame-grilled pork set and mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), with a fried egg cooked at the self-serve bar. The springy jjukkumi was the highlight, and with sets around 10,000 won, Cafe Dongi delivers on both price and satisfaction.

I was craving a healthy, satisfying meal and that's how I ended up at 'Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Branch' in Daegu's Daemyeong-dong. It's a clean, tidy spot where you can fill up on a hearty meal, and my visit ended up exceeding expectations — here's the full rundown.

What is Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch like? A gallery-like wood space from a furniture shop
The moment I stepped into Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch, what struck me most was the warm wood interior and the tidy layout. Apparently Dongi started out not as a restaurant but as a handmade wood furniture shop, and maybe that's why the wood interior feels so much more stylish than a typical restaurant — almost like an art gallery. I felt like I'd walked into a museum the second I stepped in 🤩

Cafe Dongi menu and what we ordered
Looking at the menu at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch, the solo set meal lineup was really substantial. Fire-grilled pork bulgogi, jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), kimchi jjigae, usamgyeop doenjang jjigae — all the Korean soul food classics laid out neatly. I went for the fire-grilled option that immediately grabbed my appetite.
- Grandmother's stir-fried octopus (jjukkumi) set
- Fire-grilled pork (jikhwa jeyuk) set
- Mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork)
Here's what we ordered.

Free mini tangsuyuk when you sign up for membership
Dongi is running a bunch of events! Sign up for membership and you get a free mini tangsuyuk, plus there's a lemonade event going on too.

The barley gangjeong (crispy barley snack) they serve as a complimentary side is especially good, both before and after the meal.

Frying your own egg at the Cafe Dongi self-serve bar
What impressed me most was the self-bar where customers can fry their own eggs. Having fresh eggs set out and being free to fry them yourself felt like a genuinely special touch unique to 'Cafe Dongi'. Cooking my own fried egg made the wait more fun, and getting to add a hot, freshly-fried egg to my meal really bumped up how satisfying it was 🤍
Grandmother's stir-fried jjukkumi set, flame-grilled pork set and mini tangsuyuk
The dishes came out on a very neat tray — warm rice, soup, and clean side dishes included, which made me feel well taken care of.

The main dish, the fire-grilled meat, had that smoky char properly baked in. Sitting on the sizzling hot plate, the meat was topped generously with fresh sprouts, which cut through the richness of the meat cleanly and made the whole thing taste healthier and more flavorful. One bite in and the smoky, juicy meat with its tender texture had me genuinely impressed.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was packed with ingredients too, and it went down easily with rice.

Best dish at Cafe Dongi: the grandmother's stir-fried jjukkumi
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Best menu ⭐️⭐️⭐️ You absolutely must get the stir-fried octopus. The octopus pieces were seriously big. The moment I took a bite of the perfectly-cooked octopus, it wasn't chewy at all — it was springy and tender in the best way!!! Every bite had that fresh, bouncy, moist texture that just kept surprising me. I was in awe the entire time I ate it.

Look at that plump octopus meat 🐽 The savory, spicy octopus is piled high with fresh sprouts, adding a crisp, refreshing crunch with every bite. It softens the spice just enough that you never get tired of it and can enjoy it cleanly all the way through.
Dipping it in the mayonnaise sauce makes it twice as good 🤍
The sweet-and-spicy special sauce with its proper smoky char hits your nose first, then fills your whole mouth. It's not just spicy for the sake of it — there's an addictive savoriness in there that had me genuinely impressed.

How was the mini tangsuyuk?
Tangsuyuk with a crispy, chewy batter coating. The moment I saw it on the plate, the golden-brown, clean-looking presentation made my mouth water. Biting in, the outside was crispy while the inside stayed chewy and alive with texture — really appealing.
A sweet, tangy tangsuyuk sauce. The special sauce, floated with lemon, spreads a bright citrus aroma that nails the flavor balance perfectly. The sweet-salty sauce soaks gently into the crispy batter so that even the very last piece stays enjoyable without getting old.

Rather than being all thin batter, the meat inside was thick and generous, giving it a great bite. There was zero off smell — just the meat's own clean, savory flavor coming through.

Is Cafe Dongi good for solo dining and family meals?
There's even a sink at the entrance — the kind of detail that shows real care goes into everything 🫧🤍 Overall, Cafe Dongi serves food that isn't overly seasoned, letting the natural flavor of the ingredients shine, more thoughtfully prepared than a home-cooked meal. It's comfortable enough to eat here alone, and just as good a choice with family or friends on a day you're craving proper Korean food.
With prices sitting around ₩10,000, I felt like this place nails both value for money and emotional satisfaction. If you're near Daemyeong-dong in Daegu and trying to decide on a warm, thoughtfully-made meal, don't overthink it — go visit 'Cafe Dongi'. I'm already planning to come back and try a different set menu next time!
