Daegu Korean BBQ with retro patio vibes: Supbul Makchang
In short
Supbul Makchang is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, with a retro open-air pub atmosphere. I ordered a ₩51,000 set of makchang, spicy makchang, pork neck, and Cheongdo Hanjae minari, plus free beef radish soup and a spotless self-service bar. Verdict: A wonderfully committed retro spot for a varied grilled-meat meal.

For a retro-style makchang spot in Bonri-dong, this is the place!

I visited Supbul Makchang (숲불막창), a great makchang place in Bonri-dong, Daegu, with an open-air pub-like retro vibe!

A retro makchang restaurant tucked into an alley
I went to the hidden Bonri-dong gem, Supbul Makchang :) I can't believe there was a retro-style makchang restaurant like this tucked away in an alley!!

There were two entrances: one deeper in the alley and one facing Galbi Dungji! You can park along the curb by the alley entrance; if there is no space, you can use the parking lot on the Galbi Dungji side too, so keep that in mind.

Supbul Makchang in Bonri-dong is such an atmosphere-filled place!! It's “forest fire,” not charcoal!! The sliding doors can open, and it looked like they leave them open on nice days. An instantly atmospheric open-air pub-style restaurant, haha.

The restaurant was spacious, airy, and comfortable too. All the seats were tables, and the interior was neat. There were lots of cute little details everywhere. A place where parents can take a trip down memory lane, haha—old telephones, LP records, stickers, lunch bags, and more, haha. The concept is amazing!!

The walls and tables were overflowing with atmosphere, so it felt perfect for a date too!!

Ordering the makchang, spicy makchang, pork neck, and minari set
Supbul Makchang, the Bonri-dong makchang favorite! I could check the menu and order through the tablet at the table. I ordered the ₩51,000 set with 2 servings of makchang (grilled pork intestine), 1 serving of spicy makchang, 1 serving of pork neck, and Cheongdo Hanjae minari (water parsley), plus a ₩2,000 cola and ₩1,000 steamed rice.

They are also running a Naver receipt-review event, so give it a try! Even the water came in a Del Monte glass bottle, lol. It was really heavy!! Haha.

Neat, tidy basic side dishes.

At a great makchang place, the makjang (spicy fermented soybean dipping sauce) has to be good—and Supbul Makchang's was so good!! I added lots of scallions and Cheongyang chili peppers!! Supbul Makchang also gives you beef radish soup for free!! It was hot, savory, and so delicious.

I loved that the self-service bar was clean too! The wrap vegetables are there, so make sure you go grab some.

Look at how polished the self-service bar is, haha. Is this really a barbecue restaurant?!

My spicy makjang was complete, haha!

Look at the container holding the wrap vegetables, haha. Supbul Makchang is such an unusual makchang place in Bonri-dong!

A little bit of everything, from makchang to pork neck
Even the meat comes out with this much style!! A set menu that lets you try makchang, spicy makchang, and pork neck all together!!

Thick-cut pork neck.

Savory whole makchang.

Spicy makchang that was ready to eat right away!

The set even came with Cheongdo Hanjae minari!! Maybe because it was not in season, it was tough, so I grilled it!! Minari with pork belly is always right. 💓

I put the pork neck straight onto the grill and ate the spicy makchang first! It had a spicy flavor that kept me reaching for more. I loved that it came ready to eat!!

Thick pork neck, grilled to a golden brown!! I made a proper wrap with it and shiitake wasabi!

I put the pre-grilled whole makchang on too!! Since the makchang flavor is quite strong, I grilled and ate the pork neck first. How do you all eat it?! Such cute little round makchang pieces!! Seriously, of all the makchang restaurants I've been to, this one had the sharpest scissors, lol. I thought they were fabric scissors, lol.

Grill it until golden brown and eat up!! I dipped it generously in makjang and enjoyed it properly. Even the cola was in a glass bottle!! This place really commits to its concept!! 👍👍

The steamed rice comes in a brass bowl, haha. I was startled at how heavy it was when I simply picked it up!! I recommend coming with your parents or children and enjoying both the food and the experience!!! 🌷
