This is Yomireo.
Uirimji, one of Chungbuk Jecheon's signature attractions, holds both pristine natural scenery and a long history. After a healing walk along the trail with pine-scented breezes, if you're looking for a proper meal to round off the trip, you'll find Nangman Jjajang, a Chinese restaurant near Uirimji that locals and food lovers across the country recommend with one voice.
Starting in 2010 in Nowon-gu, Seoul as "Nangman Jjajangmyeon," the restaurant moved to Uirimji in Jecheon in 2014. It's more than just a Chinese restaurant — the owner's genuine hand-made cooking is guided by the firm philosophy that "technique can never beat ingredients," with the dream of becoming a hundred-year restaurant.
Completely shedding the heaviness and greasy feel typical of Chinese food, Nangman Jjajang makes fresh noodles by hand every morning, uses Korean beef bone broth and 100% domestic pork tenderloin, and serves the original "cream tenderloin tangsuyuk" (sweet and sour pork), said to be the first of its kind developed in Korea, along with tray jjajang topped with fragrant perilla leaves and fluffy fried rice. Here's a detailed look at this moving food journey.

Red brick walls and a classic terrace facade
The building is a grand two-story red brick structure, with a silver-railed terrace up top and a stylish three-dimensional calligraphy sign reading "Nangman Jjajang (SINCE 2010)."

The waiting notice at the door
There's a cute illustrated sign on the window that reads "Guests eating inside will be uncomfortable — please wait outside (a table will open up soon)" — a thoughtful gesture to protect the comfort of diners already inside. 🏢🚘
There's also a note that they do jjajangmyeon (black bean noodle) charity work, which was moving even before I walked in.
What is the interior of Nangman Jjajang like?
Opening the door, instead of the usual chaos of an old-school Chinese restaurant, you're greeted by a clean, well-organized hall that feels more like a stylish café.
Big picture windows with a green forest view
A wide window spanning the whole wall lets in Jecheon's lush trees and sunshine, with adjustable blinds offering a comfortable sense of openness throughout your stay.

Black exposed ceiling and geometric pendant lights
Under a clean dark charcoal ceiling, track spotlights and cube-shaped pendant lights cast a warm glow that completes the emotional dining mood.

Wide wooden tables and a roof-tile partition
Sturdy wood-grain tables for 4 and 6 people are paired with cushioned black chairs, and one wall features a partition modeled on a traditional Korean tiled roof along with a framed story about the restaurant's hand-made noodles, adding a cozy Korean touch.
Nangman Jjajang's brand story and five kitchen principles
Nangman Jjajang isn't just a restaurant selling food for profit — it's a Jecheon landmark that carries the youth and pride of a true "food person."

- Have love for people and food! (Love and care): Every bowl that goes out to a guest carries honest intention.
- Put your heart into the bowl! (Mindset): The health and happiness of the person eating comes first.
- Consider the diner's heart, not just seasoning the food (Understanding people): Carefully consider guests' tastes and moods.
- Technique can never beat ingredients! (Good ingredients): No fancy cooking skill can surpass fresh, honest raw ingredients.
- Something future generations can be proud of, not ashamed of! (A worthy legacy): Aiming to become a hundred-year restaurant passed down through generations.

- Not too intense in flavor!
- Not too greasy!
- Something you won't get tired of even eating every day!
- Minimize seasoning (white powder) and let the natural taste of ingredients shine!
- No bloating or guilt after eating!
- A clean, refreshing aftertaste! 🌿✨

Why Nangman Jjajang feels light: nine ingredients explained
The reason customers praise Nangman Jjajang for being "not greasy and easy on the stomach" comes down to nine kinds of effort put in behind the scenes, they say.

- 1. Domestic chili powder (mainly from Jecheon and Yeongwol): Two to three times pricier than Chinese chili powder, but this dye-free, mill-ground chili powder gives a soft, clean spiciness without heaviness.
- 2. 100% domestic fresh pork tenderloin tangsuyuk: Rather than frozen loin or hind leg cuts, they insist on 100% domestic female pig fresh tenderloin, the tenderest and softest cut, giving a melt-in-the-mouth texture with no off flavor.
- 3. Fresh noodles hand-made every morning: Dough is mixed and rolled in-house the moment it's ordered, giving the noodles their signature bounce and chewiness.
- 4. Korean beef bone health broth: Korean beef bones are simmered with Jecheon's specialty milk vetch root, hovenia, crab, onion, scallion root, ginger, and cheongyang chili to create a deep, refreshing signature broth base.
- 5. House-rendered scallion oil: Scallion oil, extracted in-house, is used for frying, wok-coating, and finishing dishes, cutting greasiness while adding depth of flavor.
- 6. Sweet potato instead of sugar: Refined sugar use is drastically cut, replaced with grated natural sweet potato for a gentle, healthier natural sweetness.
- 7. Premium Chungju apple kimchi: Crisp, refreshing domestic kimchi made with Chungju apples.
- 8. Danyang six-clove garlic tangsuyuk sauce: Garlic from Danyang, the garlic capital, is ground into the sauce for a sharp, deep flavor.
- 9. Korea's first-ever "original cream tangsuyuk," developed in 2010: This restaurant claims to be the original place that first paired a sweet, smooth cream sauce with tangsuyuk. 🍎🧄

Homemade fried rice with smoky wok flavor
Nangman Jjajang's fried rice comes on one side of the plate, golden and fluffy, with a generous portion of glossy dark-brown jjajang sauce served alongside.
Each grain of rice is perfectly coated in egg and the wok-fired aroma of scallion oil, scattering lightly in the mouth without any sogginess. Crisp corn, carrot, and scallion add a nutty crunch.

Mixing in a bit of the rich, smooth jjajang sauce, the savoriness of scallion oil and the deep umami of chunjang come together for a hearty meal that anyone, young or old, would give a thumbs up. Topping it with a piece of crisp Chungju apple kimchi is the finishing touch!
Tray jjajang and the magic of fragrant perilla leaves
Nangman Jjajang's tray jjajang comes with glossy, deep black noodles piled high with fresh, vibrant julienned perilla leaves, scattered with red chili slices and sesame seeds.
I mixed the perilla leaves evenly through the noodles with my chopsticks and took a big bite.

True to noodles hand-rolled fresh every morning, the strands don't go soft — they have an overwhelming bounce and chewiness as you bite in. Thick chunjang sauce clings richly between the strands.
The refreshing herbal scent of the generous perilla leaves in particular perfectly cuts through the richness of the jjajang, making it impossible to put down until the very last bite. Plenty of squid, meat, and onion add texture and fun to chew on.
Cream tenderloin tangsuyuk, the original in Korea
Nangman Jjajang's cream tenderloin tangsuyuk arrives on a white plate with Asian elegance, thick pieces of snow-white fried tenderloin stacked like a tower, drizzled generously with a soft ivory-colored signature cream sauce.
It's finished with thinly sliced fresh onion, colorful bell peppers, yellow sweet corn, and black sesame seeds.
I picked up a piece with my chopsticks and bit in to check the cross-section. The batter is as thin as glutinous rice and shatters crisply, revealing thick, pale, 100% domestic fresh pork tenderloin packed tightly inside.
There's not a hint of chewiness — it melts away like a tender steak or sponge cake. There's no off flavor at all, just clean, juicy meat filling the mouth.
The sweet, tangy, smooth handmade cream sauce isn't greasy in the slightest. Piled high with crisp raw onion and bell pepper, the tangy vegetable juice, savory cream, and tender meat come together — and you immediately understand why this has been the original since 2010.

From the melt-in-the-mouth cream tenderloin tangsuyuk, to the tray jjajang with its fragrant perilla leaves and bouncy hand-made noodles, to the wok-fired fried rice — every dish delivered a clean, light impression without the usual heaviness of Chinese food.
