Kiosk-ordered dakbokkeum with cheese, sausage, radish: Sijang

In short

Sijang Dakbokkeum is a Korean restaurant inside Yesan Market (예산시장) in Chungnam serving shishito pepper chicken stew. The order was placed at a kiosk for boneless dakbokkeum with added cheese, Vienna sausage, and radish, tracked via a KakaoTalk notification while walking the market, then eaten at a plaza table with rice bought nearby for ₩1,000. Even a self-declared shishito pepper hater ended up making skewers out of the peppers.

Entrance view of Yesan Market

Yesan Market used to be, once upon a time. It was seriously packed — wonder how it is now~ My memories of Yesan Market from last year were so good that this alone decided our destination: Yesan, and Yesan Market!

Still busy busy even now, but Yesan Market felt a touch quieter than last year.

How does Yesan Market actually work?

Q: How do you use Yesan Market? A: The various shops inside the market sell food that you can eat at seats inside their own store, or you can sit at the open seats in the plaza and mix food bought from different shops.

We did a slow lap of the market and couldn't resist this smell, so we ran straight over. The Yesan Market must-visit: Sijang Dakbokkeum (시장닭볶음).

Front of Sijang Dakbokkeum, a Yesan Market must-visit

Sijang Dakbokkeum has tables right in front of the shop, but we decided to order and find our own seat elsewhere to soak up the full Yesan Market atmosphere.

The only shishito pepper dakbokkeum in the country

Sijang Dakbokkeum, this Yesan Market must-visit, apparently is the only one of its kind nationwide — the reason is right there in the name: shishito pepper (꽈리고추) dakbokkeum.

Honestly, before we tried it... Andong jjimdak (braised chicken) had always been our favorite braised chicken dish, so let's see, let's see~ let's try it~

Ordered at the kiosk: boneless dakbokkeum + added cheese + added Vienna sausage + added radish!!!

We watched the owner stir-fry-fry-fry the chicken, then decided to take a lap around the market.

* Even better, Yesan Market accepts Onnuri gift certificates. Great to enjoy the market's must-visit spots, and you can pay for all of them with Onnuri certificates! Surely nobody's still not using Onnuri by now...???

A message comes through on KakaoTalk when it's ready, so there's a little time to wander before then.

Some customers clearly love this dakbokkeum enough to order an extra one to take home.

Slushies sold outside the shop

Outside, they also sell slushies.

When the KakaoTalk alert says 'your order is ready~', you head back to Sijang Dakbokkeum to pick up the food.

** NOTICE ** Adding cheese is not optional. It's mandatory.

And so, happily skipping along, we carried it back to our seat. Back at the table, we mixed the cheese in nice and thick and took a bite—

What is THIS????? I've tried a few things at Yesan Market, but I've never had anything this good????????????

Where do you buy rice and drinks?

Honestly, I don't like shishito peppers. But... this was supposed to be just moderately tasty, and instead it was so good I couldn't stop eating the peppers either.

As for rice and drinks, there are several nearby shops that lend out grill plates, and you can buy rice for ₩1,000 and water for ₩500 there at a fair price. (Onnuri certificates aren't accepted here.)

You couldn't not eat rice even if you tried — the dakbokkeum sauce is so good it basically proves the equation Korean = rice.......

Shishito peppers: spice-averse eaters beware, it's a gamble

Eat it like this~~~ and about the shishito peppers: some genuinely have a real kick and great aroma, but every once in a while you bite into one and your whole mouth suddenly goes numb — so if you can't handle spice, it's a gamble you need to be ready to lose sometimes.

Even with yeoppddeok (spicy rice cakes), we always add Vienna sausage — so if you've only had Sijang Dakbokkeum plain before, you owe it to yourself to try it again with the sausage topping. No regrets.

And me, who clearly didn't like shishito peppers—

A lot of food for two, honestly

Honestly, the dakbokkeum at Sijang Dakbokkeum, this Yesan Market must-visit, is a bit much for two people — but it's genuinely too good to skip just because there's only two of you, so if you really get full, make sure to pack the rest to go!

Once you've finished, just return your dishes to the bussing station — easy.
