First photo from a visit to Sottture Dakdoritang in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan

Today I met up with my husband's friend to eat dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew), and while searching for good restaurants around Dujeong-dong I found this place!

Parking and what the restaurant feels like inside

Sottture Dakdoritang has a well set-up parking area, so it was easy to come by car. Whenever parking is tight somewhere, I get stressed before I even walk in, but this place was comfortable to drive to. Even new drivers could park easily here.

Compared to other spots around Dujeong-dong, driving here was especially convenient.

Cozy yet clean exterior of Sottture Dakdoritang

The first thing I noticed as soon as I arrived was the exterior — warm and cozy but still clean. That certain 'good restaurant' aura was already there from the entrance.

Stepping inside, the space really stood out. You'd expect a dakdoritang or cauldron-lid restaurant to feel a bit smoky or sticky, but here the tables were spaced generously and the interior was kept very clean.

One and a half chickens for three adults

At Sottture Dakdoritang we ordered the main menu item, one and a half chickens — enough for two hungry men and me, three people total! As soon as we sat down, the staff greeted us brightly and kindly, which put me in a good mood before the food even arrived. Their service was smooth, taking care of what we needed without being over the top.

Sottture Dakdoritang says its low-temperature-aged domestic chicken and special secret sauce give the dish a clean, refined flavor.

Basic side dishes and the self-serve side bar

The basic side dishes that came out after ordering were a tidy combination that could balance the spicy, tangy flavor of the dakdoritang. They weren't overly seasoned and were clean-tasting overall, perfect for a light bite before the main dish arrived.

They bring out the side dishes at first, and if you run out, you can scoop more yourself from the self-serve bar. The side dishes were so fresh and tasty that I went back for more, haha.

How the stew looks served on the cauldron lid

Finally, today's star arrived — Sottture Dakdoritang! It came piled high with chicken, various vegetables, and potatoes on a huge iron cauldron lid, overwhelming just from the visual alone. There was no way I wasn't going to grab my camera.

The cauldron was much bigger in real life than in photos. I tried to give a thumbs up next to it for scale, but it didn't quite fit in the shot, ha.

This place's signature — chicken and egg, haha.

Thanks to the heat of the cauldron lid, the broth quickly bubbled down to a thick simmer. You know how 'cauldron-lid cooking' has been a steady trend lately for its high heat retention, letting the seasoning soak deep into the ingredients? Seeing it firsthand, I immediately understood why they insist on the cauldron lid. The aroma alone was thick with spicy-sweet flavor.

As the broth reduced, I tried the chicken first. The chicken itself had zero gamey smell, was fresh, and the meat was plump. The seasoning soaked all the way into the flesh, giving it a soft, evenly seasoned bite that was excellent.

Side order combo: rolled omelet, ramen and potato pancake

As a special reliever for the spice, we ordered the rolled omelet as a side. As soon as it arrived, its thick, fluffy look immediately caught our eyes.

One bite in, it was moist rather than dry, with savory flavor spreading through the mouth — a perfect pairing that wrapped up the numbing, spicy seasoning of the dakdoritang. It's a solid combo to order instead of steamed egg when eating spicy food, one that satisfies everyone.

Is the ramen noodle add-on worth it?

Once you've eaten your fill of the chicken, there's an essential next step you can't skip — adding ramen noodles! They cook the noodles on the iron cauldron lid, stir-fried in the deeply reduced chicken broth seasoning, so the spicy-sweet sauce coats every strand. The chewy noodles combined with the rich sauce made for a stir-fried noodle specialty on a completely different level from regular ramen soup. If you love noodles, definitely add this.

The potato pancake at Sottture Dakdoritang

We also ordered the potato pancake, which would've been a shame to skip as a side. As soon as it landed on the table, a savory oil aroma wafted up, and the edges were beautifully golden and crispy.

Tearing it apart with chopsticks and dipping it lightly in soy sauce, the outside was crispy while the inside kept that distinct chewy potato texture. It's tasty plain, light and clean, but dipping the potato pancake slightly into the spicy dakdoritang broth was a real hidden trick. The spicy seasoning and the savory potato went together perfectly — a great side choice.

Anyway, it was so delicious that what started as just a meal ended with a quick drink too... If you're looking for a great dakdoritang or a good drinking-snack spot near Dujeong-dong, I highly recommend Sottture Dakdoritang.
