Solo bar seats at Cheonan lunch spot for eggplant doenjang rice
In short
Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean restaurant in Cheonan's Buldang-dong serving rice bowls and gondeure rice. Visiting on a weekday at 11:10am, the writer tried eggplant doenjang rice bowl and mackerel gondeure rice, with the best bite being rice and spicy seasoned salted fish wrapped in gopchang gim (thick roasted seaweed). With solo bar seats and building parking, it worked well as an easy early lunch.

An early weekday lunch at 11:10am at Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch
I was looking for lunch in Buldang-dong, Cheonan and ended up at Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch. I visited around 11:10am on a weekday, a bit earlier than lunch rush, so I figured it'd be quiet — but there were more customers than I expected. No wait, but the tables were nearly full.
Solo bar seats, table seating, and an open kitchen

Walking in, the place felt clean and well-organized overall. There's a bar-style seating area good for eating alone, plus tables for four, so it seemed to work for anything from a solo meal to a family lunch.

What caught my eye especially was the open kitchen. It's partly exposed so you can watch the food being prepared, which gave the sense that the place is kept clean and well-managed.
What did I order?

Hyangtaek doesn't have a huge menu. If anything, I liked that it wasn't complicated — easy to choose. I went with what could be called the signature dishes: eggplant doenjang rice bowl and mackerel gondeure rice (short-necked wild greens rice). Ordering different dishes to compare flavors seems like a good approach here too.
Eggplant doenjang rice bowl

First up was the eggplant doenjang (fermented soybean paste) rice bowl. The eggplant was softly cooked and went well with the rice, and the doenjang-based seasoning suited it nicely. Personally, the seasoning tasted a bit sweeter than I expected. Still, the soft texture of the eggplant paired well with the rice, making for an easy, comfortable meal overall. Mixing everything together with the rice rather than eating each ingredient separately gave a good balance of flavors.
Mackerel gondeure rice

The second dish was mackerel gondeure rice — gondeure rice served with mackerel on top. I liked being able to eat fish and wild greens together with rice. The clean flavor of the mackerel and the aroma of the gondeure combined for a distinctly Korean feel. But the combination I enjoyed most was actually something else entirely.
The best combination: gopchang gim + rice + spicy salted fish

It's simple: put rice on the gopchang gim served on the side, add some bibim jeotgal (mixed salted seafood), and eat. Eating it wrapped in seaweed rather than plain gave it an extra savory note, and I kept reaching for more. I liked this combination so much I asked for a second round of gopchang gim. If you order either the eggplant doenjang bowl or the mackerel gondeure rice, try wrapping rice in the gim with the bibim jeotgal.
Solo dining or family meal — which suits it better?

Personally, I felt it suited a clean family meal well. Instead of greasy dishes like meat or fried food, the menu centers on rice, vegetables, and fish. With a small menu, kids won't take forever to decide either. That said, the saltiness or sweetness of the seasoning may hit differently depending on personal taste, so keep that in mind.
Weekday review event

During my visit, there was a weekday review event running — participating got you a plate of mushrooms. Event details can change depending on when you visit, so it's worth checking before you go.
Where do you park?

Parking might make some people hesitate about visiting restaurants in Buldang-dong, but Hyangtaek has parking on the building's floors 3–5, so it was relatively convenient to visit by car. Registering your parking after the meal gets you 2 hours free. If you're planning a family outing by car, it's worth checking parking availability ahead of time.
Would I go back? Wrapping up the visit

After trying two dishes here in person, this felt like the kind of place that comes to mind when you want a clean, simple rice meal rather than something flashy. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant for lunch in Buldang-dong — solo or with family — this is worth putting on the list.
