Daedeok grilled fish restaurant family set: Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch is a grilled fish restaurant in Daedeok, Daejeon. Before visiting Hyundai Outlet, we shared the 43,000 won two-person nourishing set with eel, mackerel, flounder, braised fish, and self-bar dishes. A great pick when grilled fish at home feels like too much work, haha.

Signature dishes at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch

Before heading to Hyundai Outlet in Daejeon that day, we decided to eat first. Grilling fish at home is a bit daunting because of the smell, right? It is great while you are eating it, but the smell lingers in the house afterward and there is cleanup to do, so I do not grill it at home very often. That is why I tend to seek out grilled fish restaurants when eating out, haha.

A new place had just opened, so we visited Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch (화덕으로간고등어 신탄진점)!

Parking and atmosphere at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch

The parking area was fairly spacious, so it was easy to park.

Inside, the restaurant was neat, with plenty of tables.

Spacious restaurant tables

High chairs are available, too. There is also a restroom inside! We visited around 11 a.m., and even though it was early, people kept coming in to eat.

Inside the restaurant during mealtime

The first thing you see when you enter is the oven. They grill the fish here themselves, and you can see the fire-lit oven right away!

Self-bar side dishes and bibimbap ingredients

After we ordered, they set out the basic side dishes first. There was kimchi, seasoned vegetables, bean sprouts, and other sides that go well with fish. You can get as many refills as you want from the self-bar.

Bibimbap ingredients including bracken fern

There were not just basic side dishes—there was tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), and muk (acorn jelly), too! Seasonal vegetables, bracken fern, and other bibimbap (mixed rice) ingredients were neatly prepared, so you could make your own bibimbap with whatever you wanted. Haeyini Papa piled on all kinds of vegetables and made himself a bowl right away, haha. We each made a trip to the self-bar before the fish arrived, and there was plenty to eat. The side dishes were generally tasty, too!

What comes with the two-person nourishing set

Two-person nourishing set menu information

We ordered the two-person nourishing set. You can choose white rice or brown rice, and we went with brown rice.

Two-person nourishing set with brown rice

The two-person nourishing set came with everything together, from eel to mackerel and flounder, so it was convenient to order just one menu.

A full table with eel, mackerel, and flounder

With three kinds of fish plus braised fish, it was more than enough food for two, haha.

Set meal with three kinds of fish and braised fish

Easy-to-eat, boneless eel

The eel was plump and boneless, so it was easy to eat. I cut it into bite-size pieces and dipped them in the sauce, which went nicely with the mild eel, haha.

Grilled flounder

Golden, moist mackerel and flounder

The mackerel and flounder came out beautifully grilled, too. Maybe because they were cooked in the oven, the outside was nicely golden while the fish inside stayed moist, haha. The mackerel was thick and meaty, so there was plenty to eat! The flesh came away softly with chopsticks, and the golden-grilled flounder was mild and easy to enjoy as well.

Braised fish with bracken fern and radish

Spicy braised fish and after-meal drinks

The braised fish that came with it was delicious, too. It had bracken fern in the spicy broth, with soft-cooked radish and mackerel. The tender radish soaked in that spicy broth was really good! I piled plenty of bracken fern on the mackerel and soaked it in the broth before eating it. With the brown rice, I finished a whole bowl in no time, haha.

Maesil and sujeonggwa enjoyed after the meal

Afterward, we each had a drink of maesil (Korean plum drink) and sujeonggwa (cinnamon-ginger punch). After all the grilled and braised fish, it was a nice way to freshen up!

I only visit Daejeon once in a while, but since grilling fish at home feels like such a chore, I think this is a place that will come to mind whenever I crave grilled fish, haha. I should stop by Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Sintanjin Branch again next time I am in Daejeon!
