Today I'm sharing a Jungmun spot I visited during my Jeju trip — 'Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap,' where you eat abalone hijiki hot-pot rice and aged kimchi-braised mackerel wrapped in lettuce as ssam-bap!

For a Seogwipo breakfast, warm hot-pot rice plus fresh veggies, all kinds of side dishes, abalone porridge, and as much pork bulgogi as you want — I was completely satisfied.

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap exterior and parking: no wait at 11am

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a large Korean restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo, with ample parking and even an annex building. We visited at 11am for brunch and there was no wait.

Garden entrance to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap that looks like an arboretum

The path leading in was so full of blooming flowers I wondered if I'd wandered into an arboretum instead of a restaurant — it was really well kept! Since the place is huge, the parking lot has plenty of space too, so no need to worry. There's even an annex, so the whole place is bigger than I expected.

We came at 11am for brunch so there was no wait, but watching the crowd, most of the other diners were groups — school groups, family group travelers — so seats filled up fast. Aside from that, most of the rest were families visiting with their parents.

Inside the restaurant

The tables are long and there's really plenty of space! That's probably why so many groups come here. Past noon during peak hours, you might need to wait.

Another great thing about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap — it's not a Korean buffet, yet the self-serve bar has all kinds of side dishes.

Self-serve bar: wrap greens, pork bulgogi and japchae

The self-serve bar at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has farm-grown lettuce wraps and various side dishes, plus pork bulgogi and japchae. Even though it's not a Korean buffet, you can take as much as you like.

Wrap greens grown on the restaurant's own farm

One reason this was a great choice for Seogwipo breakfast — ssam-bap loaded with vegetables! Even better, they're grown on their own farm, which felt trustworthy. You can also grab extra side dishes here.

Not a Korean buffet, yet pork bulgogi is included

Pork bulgogi prepared at the self-serve bar

Beyond the standard side dishes, there's pork bulgogi and japchae, perfect for eating with the wraps — I thought, this is exactly the kind of Korean restaurant I was hoping to find. Everyone was jammed up in front of this station, haha.

Free abalone porridge for morning customers: just show the coupon

At Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, morning customers can get free abalone porridge just by showing the Naver Place coupon! I scooped a warm bowl before the meal.

I'm not great with innards, and since it had that abalone-innard color I only took a small taste — but there was no fishy taste, no bitterness, it was totally savory! Having it right before the main meal warmed me up so nicely.

Standard side dish spread with diced radish kimchi, soft tofu sauce, salad, and seaweed

The standard side dishes included diced radish kimchi, soft tofu sauce, salad, seaweed, and more. If you want more, or something's missing, just go grab it from the self-serve bar mentioned earlier! We thought it'd be too much so we only took the pork bulgogi and japchae, but the pork bulgogi was seriously good enough to sell on its own — slightly sweet with a rich, thick sauce, mixed into rice and wrapped in lettuce, it'd knock you out. My sibling and I refilled it twice, haha.

The full table: aged kimchi-braised mackerel and abalone hijiki hot-pot rice

The aged kimchi-braised mackerel at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap comes out with the mackerel wrapped in aged kimchi, and inside are four hearty pieces of mackerel. Paired with hot-pot rice topped with abalone and hijiki, it made for a very filling brunch.

The cooked mackerel-in-kimchi dish arrived! Mackerel wrapped in aged kimchi — visually stunning. I wanted to pile it onto white rice immediately.

And the hot-pot rice topped with abalone and hijiki! It made for such a filling brunch, I was so happy.

Head to the self-serve bar with your bowl to scoop out more. Don't forget to scrape the pot clean afterward to make nurungji (scorched rice)!! The abalone in the hot-pot rice was also coated in an innard-based sauce, but it wasn't fishy or off-tasting at all — totally easy to eat.

Inside here are four really hearty pieces of mackerel!!

One thick, meaty piece of mackerel

It looked small in photos, which is a shame, because each piece was actually huge. Plump with lots of meat, and the seasoning was so good.

A wrap bite of aged kimchi and mackerel

Wrapping it up in a big bite with the aged kimchi right there — so delicious!!! The kimchi wasn't too sour either, so it paired really well with the mackerel. It was my first time having it as ssam-bap, and I ate two baskets, haha.

Nurungji time~~ You'll be really full from all the wraps, but don't forget this. Pace yourself. It tastes so good with the scorched rice. Honestly, I eat the hot-pot rice just for this 🤍

On the way out after paying, they were selling all kinds of local specialty products and snacks, and there's a coffee machine too! Perfect for parents who love instant mix coffee.

Final verdict on Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Having such a filling Seogwipo breakfast of abalone hot-pot rice and hearty aged kimchi-braised mackerel meant I had plenty of energy for water play afterward! The lettuce wraps were fresh, and with so many different side dishes to enjoy, there wasn't a moment to get bored — it was truly delicious. The aged kimchi wasn't musty either, and the mackerel was packed with meat, making the wraps genuinely satisfying.

With baby chairs available, this is a strong recommendation for breakfast or lunch if you're traveling with a baby, with your parents, in a group, or staying near Jungmun in Seogwipo!!
