Fatty grilled mackerel set in Jungmun, Jeju: Godeungeo Ssam-bap
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Jeju local-food restaurant serving mackerel ssam-bap (grilled mackerel with wrap vegetables) at 1240 Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo. The writer ordered the fatty grilled mackerel and abalone hot-pot rice and helped themselves to a self-serve bar of farm-grown wrap vegetables, side dishes and unlimited pork bulgogi and japchae; the mackerel had the oil cooked out of it, so it tasted clean rather than salty and suited a child. With a big parking lot, a rose garden and a 9:30am opening, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is an easy full meal for a family.

Where it is, where to park, and the rose garden

On Jeju trips I mostly eat black pork or hairtail, but this time I went for godeungeo ssam-bap (grilled mackerel with lettuce wraps), a local Jeju dish 😉

The first thing that catches your eye is the spacious rose garden. You come for a meal and get to see flowers too, great for family photos 🤣
The parking lot is big too, so it's easy to come by car 🤓
Inside the restaurant: can you bring a baby?

A spacious interior welcomes you right as you walk in. They have baby chairs as well as group seating, so it's great for family gatherings or trips 🥺

I thought there wouldn't be many customers at that odd hour, but since it's known as a local favorite among Jeju residents, there were already quite a few 💘

They also have a microwave, so it's convenient for warming up baby food or purées 😉

What's on the self-serve bar: wrap vegetables and side dishes
At a ssam-bap place, the wrap vegetables matter most 💖 They said the vegetables are grown on their own farm, which made it feel even more trustworthy 😜 Plenty of variety and very fresh 🤣

Naturally, none of the side dishes are recycled. So many kinds, it's fun wrapping and eating them 💘 It's self-serve style but everything has a cover, so it stays clean 💗
What we ordered: fatty grilled mackerel and abalone hot-pot rice
What I ordered was fatty grilled mackerel + abalone hot-pot rice.

The vegetables are varied too 🤓 Each has its own scent, so wrapping the meat or mackerel with them felt fresh each time ❤️ It's fun mixing and matching 🙆🏻♀️

So many side dishes, right? 🤣 Pickles and jangajji (pickled vegetables), plus rice-thief dishes like anchovies and braised soybeans, perfect for snacking on between bites 😜

Unlimited pork bulgogi and japchae refills
I was so surprised that pork bulgogi and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) are unlimited refill items 💖 Just these two, wrapped up, make a full meal 🥺 Both dishes are crowd-pleasers that anyone can enjoy 😇

How does the grilled mackerel taste?
The mackerel looks like it came out of a wood-fired oven. The oil is thoroughly drained off, so it tastes clean and light 🤣 The flesh is thick and generous, great with rice too 💗

It wasn't salty, so it was good even to eat with my baby 🤓 The soy-chili sauce that comes with it is the highlight 💘 A light dip on the mackerel gives it a savory, salty kick that goes perfectly with rice 🙆🏻♀️

Abalone hot-pot rice and the nurungji (scorched rice) finish
The abalone hot-pot rice looks healthy the moment you see it. With tot (seaweed), abalone, and even sweet pumpkin in it, the colors are lovely too 😜
Put the grilled mackerel on top of the hot-pot rice and the bowl disappears before you know it. Be sure to have the nurungji (scorched rice) at the end too❗️ Another great meal today ☺️
Is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap worth a visit?
Lots of wrap vegetables and a clean, generous self-serve bar make for a hearty meal 🤣 The rose garden is pretty too, so there's plenty to see, more than enough for a family visit ❤️ Clean, healthy, and filling — a solid meal 🥺
