A neat spread that captures the taste of fresh ingredients instead of seasoning — Bapkkot Hansang near Sejong Lake Park.

After a walk around Sejong Lake Park, I wanted some proper Korean food, so I stopped by Bapkkot Hansang. Not only could I try a variety of Korean dishes in one sitting, but they also said they don't use seasoning or MSG, cooking instead with fresh ingredients prepared the same day — which made me even more excited.

Finding Bapkkot Hansang near Sejong Lake Park

Bapkkot Hansang is located on the 3rd floor of the building. Arriving in front of the store, the dark wood-toned exterior wasn't flashy but gave a calm, tidy first impression with the warm color of the wood and potted plants. The brush-stroke-style sign lettering on the glass entrance door also matched the upscale Korean restaurant atmosphere well.

Inside Bapkkot Hansang: a roomy wood-toned dining room

Inside, the atmosphere was cozy, combining warm wood tones with soft lighting. Rattan lighting fixtures hung at regular intervals from the ceiling, adding a refined touch to the traditional Korean restaurant feel. Wood blinds were installed along the large windows, and tall partitions between tables meant I could eat without worrying much about people around me.

The tables were also spaced fairly generously, and the interior was wide and comfortable, making it look good for family gatherings or group meals. With warm lighting and an overall calm mood, it also seemed like it would suit dates or a comfortable first meeting where you want to talk. High chairs were available too, so it looked like a good option for families dining out with kids.

I heard that on weekday lunchtimes, many staff from the government complex visit, so if you want a more relaxed meal, it might be good to avoid the busy lunch hour or make a reservation in advance.

What we ordered: the Bapkkot Teukseon set, 25,000 won

Today I ordered Bapkkot Hansang's representative and signature menu, the Bapkkot Teukseon. Unlike a typical rice-bowl menu with just one main dish, this was a generous spread where you get to try salad, jeon (pan-fried dish), japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), boiled pork, tteokgalbi, stew, and various namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes, one after another. Being able to taste a bit of many dishes made it especially good for first-time visitors or for taking your parents out to eat.

Buckwheat noodle salad to start

I started with the buckwheat noodle salad, which lightly wakes up your appetite. The crunch of fresh vegetables paired well with the soft, chewy buckwheat noodles, and the tangy yet savory sauce opened up my palate nicely. Rather than a rich or intense sauce, it was a clean start that didn't get in the way of the flavors to come.

Namul and side dishes made fresh each day

A variety of side dishes were also served, including chwinamul (aster greens), seasoned perilla leaves, seasoned cucumber, seasoned bellflower root, and a nut dish. The namul weren't tough at all, staying soft while each kept its own aroma, and the seasoned cucumber was crisp and refreshing, cleansing my palate in between bites. The nut side dish had a nutty, crunchy texture that added a nice change of pace.

Gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste) and doenjang jjigae

The bubbling gangdoenjang had a deep, savory soybean flavor without being too salty. Mixed a little into rice or eaten with the namul, it tasted comforting and hearty, like home cooking.

The doenjang jjigae also had plenty of tofu and vegetables, giving the broth a deep, savory flavor. Instead of a strong seasoning-driven umami, I could taste the natural flavor drawn out from the soybean paste and ingredients, so I could eat it comfortably right to the end.

Rather than seasoning each side dish heavily, they seemed to bring out the natural flavor of the ingredients, so I didn't get tired of eating even after trying so many.

Minari tteokgalbi (water dropwort beef patties)

The minari (water celery) tteokgalbi was especially memorable at Bapkkot Hansang. The surface was appetizingly grilled while the inside stayed moist and tender, with sweet juices coming through with every bite. The heavy richness of the meat was balanced out by the fragrant minari, so it wasn't greasy, and the seasoning matched well with rice too. It's a flavor that both kids and adults would generally enjoy.

Buchujeon (Korean chive pancake)

The golden-fried buchujeon was crispy on the edges and moist inside. It was packed with chives, so the fragrant flavor spread with every bite, and it wasn't overly greasy, making it easy to eat without feeling heavy. Dipped lightly in the soy sauce, the salty umami made me keep reaching for more.

Hanbang suyuk (herbal boiled pork)

The herbal boiled pork was cooked soft with no gamey smell, and the juices tasted nutty with every chew. The herbal aroma wasn't too strong, so it was a flavor anyone could enjoy without hesitation.

Home-style Korean food that tastes full-flavoured without MSG

Overall, the seasoning at Bapkkot Hansang wasn't excessive or intense. At first it might taste plain, but the more you eat, the more you notice the flavors the ingredients themselves carry — the aroma of the namul, the savory depth of the doenjang, the nutty richness of the meat. They say they don't use seasoning or MSG, cooking instead with fresh ingredients prepared that day, and maybe because of that, my stomach didn't feel too heavy even after eating my fill across so many dishes.

Some Korean restaurants I've visited recently had strong seasoning that tasted great at first but got saltier the more I ate. Bapkkot Hansang was the opposite — the biggest difference was that it felt more comfortable the more I ate, like home-style Korean food.
