Gongdeok Seoul private-room Korean beef lunch with grape juice: Usu
In short
Usu is an all-private-room hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant on the basement 2nd floor of the Lotte Castle President commercial building by Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. The Lunch C course for two ran from woogyejinjuk (ox and chicken rice porridge) through three bite-sized dishes, shiitake with shrimp and zucchini, abalone five-color gardenia noodles, hanwoo grilled on a personal tabletop brazier, seasonal fish pot rice and corn ice cream, with staff knocking before every entry and grape juice served on the house. Usu suits in-law meetings and family gatherings where a quiet, separate room matters.

If you're looking for a restaurant with a great atmosphere in Gongdeok, this is one you absolutely need to save — I went to Usu. These days I find myself looking for places where I can just quietly talk and enjoy a meal, rather than somewhere that's only about the food, haha.
This is a Mapo dining spot built around hanwoo (Korean beef) with a full Korean course built around it, so the meal itself is comfortable and private, which makes it even more satisfying — and it's surprisingly reasonable for a dining omakase. If you've been looking for a fine Korean-cuisine restaurant in Seoul, somewhere to take your parents, or a spot for an in-law meeting, this one's worth keeping an eye on.
Where Usu is in Gongdeok, and parking
Usu is located at 201, B2, Lotte Castle President commercial building, 109 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00. Parking is available.

The restaurant is on basement level 2 of the Lotte Castle commercial building, and the parking lot was spacious, which I loved. Gongdeok itself is really convenient transit-wise with several subway lines meeting there, so it's a great meeting point too. You feel the touch of luxury from the entrance itself, haha.
Let's head straight into Usu. Before I get into the food, let me just quickly point out what makes Usu stand out.
- Fully separated private rooms at every seat
- Right in front of Gongdeok Station for easy access
- Parking available
- A course combining hanwoo and Korean cuisine
- An atmosphere well-suited to family gatherings, anniversaries, and in-law meetings
All private rooms, with staff who knock before entering

What I liked most was the space itself! Usu is set up with every seat in a private room, so you can eat without worrying about other tables. Places like this are honestly hard to find these days.
Being able to close the door and talk freely among ourselves meant we could focus more on the meal, and the overall atmosphere was calm and refined. And since it's a course meal, staff come in and out several times — but every time, they knocked and checked before entering, which I really appreciated.
Being able to talk in a fully separated private room is a huge plus! It was a Mapo dining spot that could work well for anything from meeting both sets of parents to birthdays, anniversaries, and family gatherings.
What comes in the Lunch C course for two
That day I had the Lunch C course for two. Usu isn't just a grilled-hanwoo restaurant — it's course dining where Korean dishes come out in sequence.
The lineup went from bite-sized dishes to seafood, hanwoo, personal-grill hanwoo, rice with side dishes, and finally dessert, so there was fun in waiting to see what came next.

When you order the course, they bring out the day's ingredients and explain them — plus photo time, of course. Honestly, photo time matters for an omakase, right? Between the detailed explanations and the refined food, it was basically game over... this is a Gongdeok restaurant you absolutely have to visit for anniversaries, haha.
Woogyejinjuk: ox and chicken rice porridge
The course opened with woogyejinjuk. It went down soft and warm, gently filling my stomach — a perfect first dish. It was very smooth and creamy, with a subtle savory aroma.
Such a pretty porridge... how do you even eat it? But it was so good I just slurped it up the moment it arrived, haha. Actually, I just drank it (a bit sheepishly...).
Three bite-sized starters
Three bite-sized dishes: hanwoo bulgogi, scallop with clam, and lobster. Each ingredient had a different flavor and texture, so it was fun trying them one by one.

The hanwoo bulgogi was soft with a sweet-savory-salty depth, while the scallop was plump with a subtle sweetness. The lobster had plump, springy flesh with a proper nutty flavor. Each had its own texture and taste, so it was fun picking through them one at a time.
Shiitake, shrimp and zucchini
The shrimp was plump, the shiitake mushroom was moist and fragrant, and the zucchini was gently cooked — a great combination. The deep aroma of the shiitake paired surprisingly well with the sweetness of the shrimp. Overall it wasn't overly seasoned but light, which made it easy to taste the natural flavor of the ingredients.

Abalone with five-color gardenia noodles
The abalone five-color gardenia noodles were gorgeous from the color alone ✨. The noodles were smooth and springy, and the abalone had a proper crunchy, chewy bite. Overall it was light and clean, which felt like a nice palate reset after the earlier dishes.

This is the seasonal fish pot rice — after it's made, they portion it out for you. They neatly transfer it into individual bowls, and before doing so, they even showed it to us first, which I really appreciated.

Hanwoo on a personal brazier, plus grape juice service
The dish I was most looking forward to in this course: personal-grill hanwoo! Being able to grill it yourself to your preferred doneness on your own individual grill was great. Grilled just a bit golden, the outside was savory while the inside stayed moist and tender 🤍 The more you chewed, the more the juices and the distinct savory flavor of hanwoo came through — this really felt like the main event.🥩🥩

Being able to grill it individually at your own grill was convenient, and pairing it with the vegetables gave a real sense of enjoying something refined.

I even got grape juice as a service, so if you're visiting for a birthday or anniversary, keep that in mind. They take care of you with a polaroid photo plus grape juice or wine for anniversaries — it's genuinely touching.
Seasonal fish pot rice
Coming out as the closing dish: seasonal fish pot rice. The grill and the seasonal fish pot rice arrived together, so we grilled meat while also having seaweed soup with rice... the basic side dish spread was also really satisfying — a great Gongdeok restaurant.
On top of fluffy rice sat moist, light fish, and mixing it all together brought out a proper savory depth. Even after eating hanwoo beforehand, the seasoning wasn't heavy, so it wasn't overwhelming, and the warm pot rice was hearty and satisfying right to the end.

Dessert: corn ice cream
After enjoying a filling course, it wrapped up cleanly with dessert! Not heavy, just light enough to enjoy easily. It felt like a fresh reset after the savory richness left over from the hanwoo and pot rice. The flow of the course was satisfying from start to finish 🤍
It was corn ice cream — genuinely nutty, light, and paired beautifully with the soft castella. It looked so pretty it felt a shame to eat, but I really, highly recommend this Mapo Gongdeok private-room restaurant.

Which occasions Usu suits best
Personally, I think Usu suits a proper meal on a special day more than a casual stop for a quick bite. With every seat in a private room, it's quiet, and since the course combines Korean cuisine with hanwoo, it seems like something both the parents' generation and younger diners could enjoy without much disagreement.
Especially if you're looking for an in-law meeting restaurant around Gongdeok, I'd recommend checking this one out just for the space alone. Access from Gongdeok Station is good and parking is available, so it looked like an easy option for both families to gather without much burden.
A place where you can slowly enjoy everything from refined Korean cuisine to quality hanwoo — genuinely satisfying. If you're looking for a Gongdeok restaurant with more atmosphere and something a bit special, or want to enjoy a hanwoo-centered omakase, it's a solid choice. I'd especially recommend it to anyone looking for a fine Korean-cuisine restaurant in Seoul, an in-law meeting restaurant for an important gathering, or a quiet Mapo dining spot.🥩✨
