Seolleung sushi bar with order sheets: engawa and beef, Sushi Maiu

In short

Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant a 3-minute walk from Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Sitting alone at the bar table, I took plates off the rail and ticked a board-marker order sheet for the off-belt items — engawa (flounder fin), jeomseongeo (barred knifejaw) and yuksashimi (raw beef) sushi — with plates running 2,100 to 7,500 won by colour. For solo diners who find ordering out loud awkward, Sushi Maiu is one of the easiest sushi meals in Gangnam.

Why I chose Sushi Maiu near Seolleung Station

Today I went to Cheongdam alone to get my hair done, then walked all the way to Seolleung for lunch. I used to go to Sushi Maiu often in Busan, but this was my first time visiting a Seoul branch! Maybe that's why I was so excited about it✨ It's a 3-minute walk from Seolleung Station, close to the subway exit!

What the bar table is like for solo diners

I visited after the lunch peak had passed, so it was quiet, but the plates were still all in good condition — table turnover must be fast. I sat at the bar table, and it was great for solo drinking or solo dining🫶

Besides sushi, there were also alcohol menus, set meals, karaage, sashimi rice bowls, and soups. I just enjoyed the sushi!😋

How the board-marker order sheet works

I'm the type who finds ordering out loud a bit hard, but if what I wanted wasn't on the belt, I could just check it off here and they'd bring it to me! I normally hate raising my hand to ask, so this was great. They give you a board marker, and you just check the boxes above!👏

They also brought out miso soup first. It was nice to warm up my stomach with the tasty miso flavor before starting☺️

Sushi is best with soy sauce and wasabi! The wasabi wasn't too spicy either, which I liked.

I don't eat pickled ginger, but it wasn't on the table — it was going around on the belt, so I took it down and snapped a photo!

Every sushi I took off the belt and ordered

There was a wide variety of sushi on the belt, so I picked some off directly and ordered others through the sheet. Even on the belt, plenty of my favorites were going around.

Various sushi plates going around the belt

Classic salmon sushi

I started with classic salmon sushi! It was a moderately fatty cut, so it tasted great. No fishy smell at all, and the salmon was really fresh! Besides this classic version, there were ones topped with onion, seared (aburi) ones, and rolls too, but I'm a classic-is-best type, so plain salmon was already delicious!☺️

Raw shrimp sushi

Next up was raw shrimp! I'd been craving raw shrimp for a while. Maybe from watching too many live shrimp mukbangs lately, but I really wanted that sweet, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth raw shrimp. It was in good condition too, easy and satisfying to eat😚

Flounder (gwangeo) sushi

Next I had flounder! I always feel like you have to try white fish when you're at a conveyor-belt sushi place! What I liked was that the sashimi was sliced long, so I could enjoy a full mouthful!! And the flounder had a firm, springy texture, so it was clearly fresh👍

Long-sliced flounder sushi

Jeomseongeo (barred knifejaw) and salmon belly

I ordered jeomseongeo (barred knifejaw) since they had it. It felt similar to flounder but different — firmer, with a more satisfying chew. Somewhere between chewy and firm? After eating fattier things, a white fish sushi like this is perfect to reset your palate!

It might look similar to before, but I also ordered salmon belly sushi! The classic salmon was already plenty tasty, but the belly cut had more fat, making it richer and softer.

Flounder fin, or engawa

And then my favorite — flounder fin! I generally prefer fattier cuts, and belly-area parts are never bad! The engawa (flounder fin) was sliced thick too, so I could really enjoy it properly.

The best bite: yuksashimi (raw beef) sushi

Of everything I ate today, the yuksashimi (raw beef) sushi was the best. Maybe because it was so fresh, the texture was great and I could really taste the acidity, so it was delicious. I especially loved the combination of the green onion and sesame oil on top, so I ordered it a second time!

Can you get Sushi Maiu to go?

Sushi could be taken out too. Rice bowl dishes like sashimi rice bowl were also available for takeout. If it's delicious, it'd be nice to take some home so the rest of the family can enjoy it too!

Is Sushi Maiu worth it for a solo meal?

I came to Sushi Maiu today for a solo meal, and the sushi quality was so good that I left satisfied. If you like conveyor-belt sushi, I recommend it!!
