Yubok Haemul Kalguksu Dongtan: kalguksu and octopus in one meal
Yubok Haemul Kalguksu Dongtan Direct Branch is a seafood kalguksu (noodle soup) restaurant on Dongtangongwon-ro 3-gil in Hwaseong. Order the two-person set and you get bok-haemul kalguksu and grilled spicy octopus together. If you're craving kalguksu but also want something spicy, this set menu lets you enjoy both at once!

Given the nature of a kalguksu restaurant, the atmosphere felt easy for family dining, and the table spacing was comfortable enough to eat at a relaxed pace.

This felt like a great place to visit on a day you're craving hot soup or something spicy! Above all, being able to eat kalguksu and octopus together was the best part.
Inside Yubok Haemul Kalguksu: the room and the self-serve bar
Overall, Yubok Haemul Kalguksu Dongtan Direct Branch had a clean, comfortable atmosphere.

Following the posted tips for eating kalguksu made it taste even better!

There was a separate self-serve bar, so I could refill side dishes without feeling awkward about it — so convenient!
Barley rice, included with every order
As soon as we sat down, barley rice arrived first as a starter. Having barley rice come along with a kalguksu meal was a nice light bite before the main dish.

Barley rice has its own nutty flavor, so it was great for whetting the appetite before the kalguksu arrived. Getting this as a default starter was a quietly satisfying touch.
What the pufferfish seafood kalguksu with sea squirts looks like
If you love ark shell clams (omandungi) in seafood kalguksu, this is a welcome sight.
There were plenty of ark shell clams, so it was fun picking them out one by one, and since the broth was simmered with seafood, the refreshing, savory flavor really came through.

What comes with the Yubok Haemul Kalguksu two-person set
Yubok Haemul Kalguksu two-person set
After some deliberation, we ordered the two-person set. It came with bok-haemul kalguksu plus grilled spicy octopus, so we got to taste both dishes at once.

The octopus has a completely different mood from the kalguksu, so eating them together was a great combo. The smoky char from the grilling came through subtly, and the spicy seasoning really woke up the appetite.

The chewy octopus paired well with the spicy sauce on its own, but it also went well with a side of barley rice. Taking a bite of the spicy grilled octopus after the warm, refreshing bok-haemul kalguksu completely changed up the flavor experience!

How were the broth and the knife-cut noodles?
With kalguksu, the hot broth is always the main appeal.

The refreshing flavor drawn out from the seafood blended well with the heartiness typical of kalguksu, making it perfect for a day you're craving a soup dish.

Eating the noodles with the hot broth was filling, and getting to enjoy seafood and kalguksu together made for a satisfying meal.

The noodles had a chewy texture that wasn't heavy when eaten with the broth, and the soup itself was clean-tasting while still carrying that distinct refreshing seafood flavor. Above all, being able to eat seafood kalguksu warm all the way through the broth made it a dish I'd crave even more on chilly days like these.

When is the two-person set the right order?
Ordering kalguksu alone might feel a little lacking, but with grilled spicy octopus added on, the menu lineup felt quite substantial.

Especially when dining with a group, it seems better to enjoy a soup dish and a spicy dish together rather than sticking to just one menu.

If you want to enjoy kalguksu and octopus together, ordering the set menu is a solid option. I'd love to come back to Yubok Haemul Kalguksu and try other menu items alongside the kalguksu next time. :)
